I was listening to the radio omw to work this morning and they were talking about this 19 year old who, along with 5 members of her family, won 67 million...

And now her 21 year old ex boyfriend of 2 years (who she broke up with either right before or right after she found out she won) thinks he should get a couple million because while they were dating she had expensive taste.

Do you agree?

I personally think that is absurd, but people were calling in actually agreeing that he should get something... and I want to understand this mindset, I really do.

What? what are their arguments? Curious

He paid for dates while they were together and have her gifts...and "what is she going to do with all that money she should share it"

I would probably agree that it would be nice of her to help out loved ones who were there for her before the money if they didn't expect it like this douche

It's the generous and smart thing to do. When things go your way, you take care of the people who were close to you at the time. It goes towards character.

But she is 19.
There are a lot of assumptions here. You're assuming they had a good relationship. I'm assuming, by even bringing this up, he's probably a jerk.

I agree, to me this says more about his character than hers

Eh. There's no shortage of people who want something for nothing.

Depending on the state and their habitation status at the time of the win, he could conceivably have a legal claim to a portion of the money.

That infuriates me!! They weren't married, and she wasn't even legal for half their relationship.

Some states haven't kept up with the times in regards to these kinds of "common law" statutes.

Mostly southern and plains states. I remember we had an awful time in Florida especially where I worked a while ago. In Florida you better get a ring and a prenup before moving in with anyone.

It's the same here nationally. If you've lived together for more than 5 years it can be treated like a common law marriage.

It's just six months where I live. That means I've been married 4 times! ?

6 months—? What state is that?

NY is not a common law state so I only have the one marriage on the books.

Well I think some states are throwing out common law marriage. And did they live together?

He gets nothing. Dating is not marriage. It doesn't matter if he bought her stuff he did that on his own. Nobody put a gun to his head. People need to admit their mistakes as lessons and move on with life. LOL!

Hell no.

unless there was some explicit written (not an implicit and/or verbal, which is much less enforceable) contract signed by both parties, any money he spent on her is nothing but a gift... and legally not even that (which would potentially have tax implications, but that'd be money to the IRS, not him).

If he wasn't capable of saying no to her during their relationship, that's his own problem.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3723611/Ex-boyfriend-lottery-winner-s-daughter-miss-share-jackpot.html

NEVERMIND. This was in the UK.

I think the real kicker is that they won this and the family was already well off as it was.

Also, this article doesn't state anywhere where the guy felt entitled. He jokingly mentioned it would be nice to get a few mil given her sister's boyfriend got a chunk of the winnings and this kid dated the girl for a few years.

Of course he's not entitled to shit, but based on the articles I found, it doesn't sound like him whining, just "well fuck, isn't that how it goes..."

No, most states aren't getting rid of them. They are just deferring to county circuit courts to rule on those issues at their discretion.

If there are any archaic local or state laws on the books, he could be a total dick and tie up the winnings in a lengthy appeals process until a higher court refuses to hear an appeal.

I could see it going as high as a federal circuit court.

Good to know - I can take back my douche comment now. I never bothered to look for the article haha

I was more astounded that other people calling in felt like he was entitled to something
..it doesn't surprise me. We live in a society of stupid asses who believe in participation trophies and people being entitled to something they aren't entitled to due to "fairness" when it's far from "fair."

In other words, a good chunk of people refuse to live in reality, thanks to a combination of coddling, gradually dumbing down everyone for the last few decades, lack of accountability, and just not wanting to adult normally.

Also, something I noticed in the comments section and headlines in the few articles I found- the media blew it out of proportion because he jokingly said he wouldn't mind getting a few mil since he dated her, even though he also explicitly said he knew he wasn't getting anything/wasn't entitled to it.

So people read the blurb and the headlines and took off with it, vilifying the kid.

It was amusing reading the comments because you had either people doing that, or the sane individuals going "wtf media with your bullshit headlines misleading everyone??" haha.

Yeah seriously ! I was calling him a douche lol

Hearing it on the radio they made it sound as if he was going legal on her and he was making his case that she had expensive taste and he wanted to be reimbursed basically for the money he spent on her while they were dating.
He did mention she had expensive taste.

This story is also dated from the beginning of August. The radio show is a bit behind on this one haha.
