So, around next year I may be going to live in Australia for a while. I am doing research on the country, but I find it more helpful with insight for people who live or have lived there.

How long did it take to get a work permit? I know the cost of living is expensive so what is the city you can most realistically survive in?

If anyone says Sydney and only Sydney, I might have to do a rethink lol. As I have heard consistantly not favorable things about it from others.

Which city is the best overall, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane or something like the Queensland area?

I'm curious on the dating scene as well. I've heard its more you have to be introduced to someone through friends and its not a place to approach women.

When I worked in a travelers hostel in LA, a few australian guys told me that if you are not rocking a six pack, be prepared for watching lots of internet porn.

They told me that women there wont give a second glance if you're not built like The Rock. Is that true or a generalization on their end?

I take care of myself but I cant weight lift due to worries of it damaging the plates and rods in my body. I'm trying to see if I can get them removed before moving. But I need insurance first.

I've heard conflicting things as well about attitudes towards Americans. Some have told me they are friendly towards Americans in person but secretly detest them.

I guess they assumed we are all Republicans that voted for Trump and that is not the case. There are a lot of Americans (myself included) who detest Trump.

Is the American disdain accurate?

That is it for my questions. Thanks for any help.

Aquanib - LOL If girls are into hopping with animals I'm good on not going. The reason I mentioned the six pack remark some Aussies told me is that down under is athlete culture. According to them being very physically fit is a requirement for dating. Just verifying if that is true or if they were having a go at me.

TCTA - My plates dont have to be removed. I just want them to be removed to prevent future arthritis with the plates making it worse.

Also, I want to be in good health by working out. I'm 36 years old, so 40 is not too far away and I really want to stay looking 28 even though Im in my 30's

Its a risk working out for me with plates as the screws in them could potentially get loose and cause an infection. I almost lost a leg right after the rods and plates were installed in due to an infection.

I had to use a special antibiotic cocktail to destroy the infection. So I am very gun-shy on putting my legs through that kind of danger again.

Pisces1803 - I dont have a work permit yet. I'm still investigating the possibility of moving. As there are countries I am looking at as well such as Canada ( Vancouver) Italy, Greece.

Hawaii is kind of on my sights too but it is still with the United States. I want to get away from Trumpmerica as far as I can at this point.

Where I live in Santa Barbara is fantastic, I think its the best place in the US myself. But I'm just scraping by and dont have much privacy where I am living.

So I feel like if that stays in this mode of coasting in the next 3-5 months, it's time to move on. Because I need more privacy and a really fantastic paying job for me to be live out my old age here.

Australians are very fake and their friendliness is superficial. They love to gossip behind your back, that's why I avoid them like the plague. I stick with Europeans all the way. They're not good candidates for forming lasting true friendships because they're too laid back for that.

Melbourne and Sydney are more fast-paced than Adelaide, but Adelaide is quieter. Too many geriatrics. AVOID Greece like the plague because the economy is in shambles. Greece is only a suitable destination if you're loaded and looking for a holiday.

Also the internet here sucks and it's expensive as hell.

Melbourne is the best city if you don't mind cooler weather.

I'm in Sydney myself and it's similar to San Francisco in vibe. Tad expensive for cost of living...

Queensland is for holidays only, interior/centre if you have a death wish- don't go anywhere without water.

WA best beaches.

Lived in every state. Spent 3years roadtrippin' my country- been everywhere.

Any questions hit meh up 🙂

What sort of Aussies are you guys dealing with? I don't think you can paint all Australians with the same brush. Lol
An Aussie once told me "a Canadian will tell you what they think of you to your face, but you find out what an Aussie thinks of you from another Aussie".

I've never met an Aussie that didn't have any "goss' to share about someone not around.

North Americans just spit it out

Aussies also get offended when they hear it, but then try to act all "matey"

I've had one backstabbing friend but I think you can categorically apply that across the board to every continent... more so in wealthy and affluent areas and perhaps young girls/guys in high school.

@Wagtail - That is very helpful thanks.

@Arielle83 - Skilled Migrant Visa would be it. That's interesting about the fakeness because when I worked at the Travelers Hostel, I met some really cool Aussies. If they were faking niceness then man they should be actors. I am usually good at detecting BS having lived in LA with all those bottle rats for two years.

To be fair, I might have met the minority of nice people in a majority of mostly fake people going by what people are say.

I am not overly fond of Britain even though Ive met some nice people from there. British have this wide-sweeping generalistic view of Americans as real-life versions of people in the movie Idiocracy.

Look Im not going to dispute that a lot of people in this country are that way but again we cant generalize everyone.

Speaking of which, does Australians have major issues with people who have red hair like England does? I have dark red hair like this - https://goo.gl/images/EoPzSY

But right now I dye my hair a different color so I can spike it like this - https://goo.gl/images/dqYUO1

Im concerned about being attacked or bullied like red haired people are in Britain. Just checking to see if I can go back to being a redhead or have to be in the closet.

@Pisces - My background is in Office Administration. I work as an admin. But am open to other work too in another country.

OP,

Lived in WA for 3.5 years but my personal preference is Victoria, specifically Melbourne, mostly because it can be culturally diverse compared to the other states/cities.

I also think those guys were only messing with you when they told you about the athletic, dateable material thing.

You might want to check out aboriginal culture while you're there too. Go for walkabouts etc.

@darklands1980 my Fiance has sort of ginger brown so he's grown up being ribbed by his family as a ranga, redhead, ginger etc... but it's all in fun.

I've never seen anyone treated harshly or bullied... I mean our first female prime minister Julia Gillard is a red head. Lol
Yea I have never witnessed severe bullying of redheads in AU.

I don't think you have anything to worry about, OP.

I'd agree with RAM416.. I found the Melbourne people a little more embracing/welcoming then the Sydney people that's for sure.

Definiately move to Melbourne over Sydney, the infrastructure is a lot better so you won't get lost, the people are nicer as well.

If you're worried about chicks only liking muscles you have to know what kind of group you want to get into. Your vibe attracts your tribe.

in Sydney it's not uncommon for straight folk to go gay clubbing I think that's the best way to make friends, just go to a gay club and you will eventually find a good group of friends that just like to party, however it's hard to do things outside the party scene in Sydney and not get caught up in drugs.

Melbourne is awesome, think I'll move there in may because I lived there for 3 years and loved it but my brother died and I moved back home and that was 5 years ago.....If you want to move to Melbourne try and get an apartment in Fitzroy, Collingwood or anything north of the Yarra river People who live south of the river are superficial yuppie scum who enjoy being plastic and go to shit clubs like revolver, circus and love machine...

If you live north of the river not only is the rent affordable (depending on who you know) the general demographic are uni students, artists and people from other countries, it's very metropolitan has the best dark, dingey bars and underground club scene.

And Australians aren't as mean as people make out, it depends on what groups you mingle with, if you like plastic, fake tits and girls with fried hair then of course they are gonna judge you on your 6 pack.

Australia is a great place to live if you're a tourist because there's heaps of tourists here, you'll make friends living in a hostel so easily.

One thing to remember is to have a good sense of humour and put a smile on your face it will get you far

Perhaps but as an expat this is what I've experienced in the general social differences between Aussies and North Americans.

yeah IDK Arielle, not sure you have the credibility to pass such judgement

I remember you were quite the drama queen coupla years back and always banging on about biotches u worked with, like you were always the princess and they were always in the wrong....

😄

Oh ya that chick that came from Sydney and claimed one chick was bullying her and befriended me and then played me and the "bully" against each other? Trying to get us both fired so she could fuck a manager?

Yeah she was fired for claiming the manager raped her when he chose someone else.

Me and the "bully" are besties cuz I told her how much I hated her for using her senority for bullying. Then she told me how my supposed Sydney "friend" was slandering me to the manager.

That was a good example of two faced in action.

Thanks dude. Almost forgot about that narcissist.

2 faced people exist everywhere though. Some are just more obvious than others.

I remember someone from Queensland telling me about his experience in Sydney - he said if I'm planning to settle in Sydney, I may as well remain in Singapore. lol

How's Newcastle? What do people have to say about Newcastle? I've been invited, but I've never accepted the offer.
It's supposed to be getting better- it's become more of a university town but it's only just becoming more metropolitan / cosmopolitan.

I loved the beaches there it's close to good surfing spots but it doesn't have the culture you expect from a place that size...

basically it's cheaper real estate but for good reason

@Pisces @Eleventh -

Thanks for the insight. And also some background on the cities.

Im to the point now where IDGAF about coloring my hair a different color anymore. Just did it to be able to spike my hair since my natural red hair is kind of coarse and wavy.

As along as Im not going to get assaulted I can handle the grief from aussies. I can talk smack right back but the aussies would probably want to fight me since I know a few jokes and innuendos that I learned from their countrymen they hate hearing.

My only concern is if most girls there detest red hair even though the one i have is a much darker color. But learn to adapt to what environment Im in so if I have to color it to get a date so be it.

Would you think going there with 7,000.00 saved would be enough to get by for a couple of months till I get a job and living situation set up?

Ok this really motivates me to get the hell out of the states now -

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/02/28/trump-sign-bill-blocking-obama-gun-rule/98484106/

We already had the Eliot Rodgers scenario with the shooting at University of Santa Barbara in 2014 two years before I came here. Not looking for a stylish reboot. Trump really is Satan's advocate.

BTW is Pot smoking all over the place in Australia like it is in LA? LA is like all you breathe is pot smoke.

Santa Barbara is here and there but the air is mostly clean with no pollution.
