Posted by ImpulsvOkay thanks -I'll keep in mind. I do know she may feel cold so it's important to keep her warm, and a warm bath might do wonders but I would hate it to get infected...
We used to have rooster growing up n remember my mom bathing an injured one with a cloth out of arnica strong tea. Do it in am n pm
Heat the arnica in water n then using a cloth soak it. Make sure warm then place it where swollen. Keep wetting cloth n place it on bird. Maybe in am n pm. Should reduce internal injuries.

Posted by rockyroadicecreamThanks rocky-
Oh gawd, wait til the vet tells you what you need to do. This hippie magic "medicine" needs to be put on hold until the properly trained vet can tell you what needs to be done. We're talking surgery here, so magic wraps with magic herbs is pointless.
I'm all for natural stuff, but people here go way too far. Hand in hand with astrology.... *eyeroll*
Fingers crossed for your feathered baby. The little creatures we take in to care for end up being parts of our hearts. It's rough when shit like this happens.

Posted by starloverOh how awful! Poor puddytat! But how wonderful she's doing well!!
Hope your pet will be okay
My cat recently came home dragging her back legs behind her.....she was very badly injured ... poor pet. 😢
We have a lovely vet and he gave her two injections and some skeletal medicine. He said to keep her in for one week and bring her back then
So something interesting happened.........she healed witihin two days ! I called him and he said that was most unusual ... Because of her age I feared she wouldnt heal . Now she is running around like a monkey.

Posted by caliberThanks for the tips caliber! Very helpful, I shall try and do that tomoro.
That's great news wag! I have parrots so I know how traumatizing the whole vet experience is. Especially with surgery.....what kind of bird? It must be rather large for them to put her under anesthesia.
Whenever my birds are ill or recovering from an injury, they recover much faster when given warm cream of wheat cereal, or a little bit of parrot baby formula with a syrynge every day.
Doing so mimics the whole baby stage again and helps with healing. I think it's more psychological than anything.

Posted by NemiliciousAww thank you! And birds are fascinating. Yes, Houdini is 15 and Madame is 9-10.
Wagtail, i hope your pet recovers. I was so intrigued by this topic that i read about parrots. And the bigger the bird, the older they get? Some of them, like gray african parrots can live to about 70 years— Fascinating! I saw your two cuties in your profile 🙂 how old are they?

Posted by rockyroadicecreamThere is a paralysis that can occur in these situations related to egg bound birds, calcium deficiency from creating eggs, weakness etc.
Aw yay!
Why won't her legs/feet work? Did the vet have an idea as to why? Or is it related to the other issue?

My beautiful little buddy Madame became egg bound and the egg broke inside her.
She fell from her perch and damaged her feet as well, as a result she went into shock very quickly but, luckily since I took the day off for some errands I was able to catch the change in her very quickly.
Panicking I took her to the vet, and he has subdued hopes they can help with surgery. I will hear this evening and may or may not have her home tonight.
My main question is after op care for her.
I have limited resources and of course I'm sure the doctor will advise me -if she survives- but if anyone on here has had practical experience in caring for their own birds I'm eager for some information or tips that have helped with your own pets.
I will be working tomorrow so I am afraid I can't keep an eye on her closely and am so worried for her and for her mate Houdini, I hate to think he might be distressed with her in difficulty and if I'm not home unable to help...
