I've noticed that there are two directions people sway to when it comes to overweight people. One is ridicule & the other one is lying (to be nice).

Yesterday I was reading some comments made by people on Honey Boo Boo's mom, June. It was her birthday a few mnths ago, so fans of the show were wishing her a happy birthday. Some made fun of her weight & some simply wished her a happy birthday without saying anything about how she looks. Near the end of the comments though, I saw one comment that stuck out to me and it said " Happy 32nd birthday, you look good for 32." Which is a lie because she doesn't look anywhere near 32, let alone good- she looks older due to her unkempt & obese appearance.

Personally, I think lying about how good a person looks when they aren't is as bad as making fun of them because obesity is an unhealthy way of being.

People get really offended when you start talking about weight issues, they start attacking others, it's a huge threat to some people and they would rather bury their heads in the sand about health issues or blame people for pointing this out saying it's because that person has no idea about it blah blah blah

I think every single woman totally understands weight issues whether it be too thin or too thick, all our lives we strive to feel good about our bodies, some just give in or don't care enough and some are happy with the way they are imo they are the ones that don't get all defensive and up in arms about someone pointing out weight. Others are just too thin skinned or offended because don't have control of their issues.

I personally encourage people to feel good about themselves if this is their problem but then I am in an industry that helps people with these issues and 80 % of my members join my club because they are hurting and want to feel better about themselves.

But it is a very touchy issue, if they bring it up, it's fine to talk about it but for someone else to bring it up, it's frowned upon!

A similar argument could be used for what one finds attractive vs unattractive. What looks "good" to one person doesn't look good to another, so it might not have been a lie for that person. For all you know the person that made the comment could be surrounded by old, massively obese looking people (I don't know what this mother looks like) and she looks "amazing" compared to who he/she sees everyday.

Very true. It's all great to tell people that they look good, attractive, etc..but it doesn't change the fact that it's an unhealthy situation. She herself said that she knows that the person who told her that she looks good was just being nice & she is currently doing something to change how she looks. She says she prefers people who tell it to her like it is because throughout her life she grew up around people (family) who made "nice comments" about her weight, telling her she looked great only for her weight to escalate because she wasn't living in reality. Reality of what she was actually doing to her body. I guess what I'm trying to say is, tell them they look good or whatever but there should be a dose of reality in there too.

How is that unhealthy? Obese people know they are overweight and a compliment given on a birthday to lift someone's mood will not make that person think that you condone obesity.

I did hence the "Guess I could have refreshed before posting on that one..." lol, and I read the first quote wrong since I thought you meant lying to obese people is unhealthy not that obesity is, sorry.

Still I am not sure how representative Honey Boo Boo and her family are about this but I've derped enough in you thread for today so I think I'll just leave for now. >>

LOL, I saw the other post after I posted. They aren't really representatives, I just found it interesting that she as an overweight person preferred those who are direct about her weight issues over those who tell her she looks great. Also the fact that snide comments are what prompted her to really take a good look at herself- who would have thought?

do you really give a shit about someone else's weight as long as you??re not paying for the food or health bills?

when i see extremely fat people (not just big or heavy set) i do wonder why, how & when did it start becoming grotesque. i suppose there are reasons - laziness, over-indulgence, low-self esteem, genes, age etc. etc. one of my oldest friends has been fighting against her weight since i know her. she has tried everything under the sun - to no avail. if you have this pre-disposition to gain weight easily, you need the double amount of discipline to maintain your ideal weight - and we all know how tedious life can be ... most overweight people i know (two girls at work and my old friend) are very touchy about this subject; they know all the things these thin people think about them. i don't believe them when they say they are fine or feel good. strap on a rucksack with extra 10 + kgs - that can't be fun. but you cannot argue or debate or open their eyes, unless they really wish to change something.

what pisses me off though are those middle sized to thin girls who constantly talk about losing weight - gtfo will ya. just stop already. also a colleague at work she wears 38/40 size clothes and constantly talks about how "fat" she is. what do you wanna hear? yeah you are? just go jogging or something. buy fitting clothes so your little muffin top does not squeeze it's way out. arrrggh.

LOL, I'm one of those who constantly complain about my weight even though I'm not big or anything like that. I guess I just don't want it to get out of hand like some of the people who make you wonder. I'd rather be below the normal BMI for my height than be way above it & if its 1 point above, I stress. I don't shout it for the world to hear thou lol.

There's this show on TLC called Too fat for 16 & parents send their 400+ lbs kids to be "helped". It makes you wonder what they were doing when the scales tipped to 200lbs. Why wait until things get way too out of hand. Many of the kids there have irreversable health issue like diabetes, hypertension, etc & can't do most of the activities offered in that place. It's sad.

A lot of ppl say bmi is bs coz u can have a lot of muscle and be over but iv found staying within healthy levels are more appealing to most people's aesthetics.

I think it's BS 😄

To a degree.

This is Honey Booboo's mom, June--

As for the OP--

Yeah, being srsly overweight is sooo bad for your health-- and not so much individuals, but the media "big is beautiful" or whatever-- yes, also unhealthy.

I think they are aware-- but I don't think people are overweight (srsly overweight, I mean) because of moral failure, like laziness or gluttony.

I think it's akin to alcoholism or any other addiction; I think they need to change, not so much their diet, but their perception-- and the rest will follow.

In other words, I think it requires a psychic change of sorts. 🙂

Oh dxpnet.

I just saw your update on the front page, what you don't get a thought about certain things or people? I'm not gonna even lie, weird thoughts cross my mind all the time. Example, I saw a hunchback (or whatever they are called, the people with a hump on their backs) & I wondered about how it felt to the touch, if it was heavy & how it looks naked. I even wondered about if the person is able to sleep on their back, napping & during sex. Missionary possible or is it mission(ary) impossible? It's just thoughts, they can be intertaining 😄

Sure I'm curious about others that are different from me. But I'm pretty accepting of other people. No filter I suppose. 😛 Lord knows I appreciate those who take the time to get to know me despite my flaws. But my thoughts move differently from most I think.

I see the hunched back man or albino and I wonder. What's it like to be him? To live in a world that constantly reminds you that you're different. Having to encounter stares and comments daily, yet still hold your head high when you walk into a room with several pair of eyes examine you curiously. To be uncomfortable in your own sense of humanity because you do not fit the worlds ideal. To be judged daily. Is this what it is like to walk a mile in your shoes? Hmm...

I don't know why? But this is how my brain works. Neither of us is wrong. I'm just different. 😢

Oh ok lol, I thought you just walked around blank. Talking about walking in people's shoes, I remember an episode once on Tyra's show where she was disguised as an obese woman just to show how mean the world actually is to overweigt people. It was interesting. If given a chance, whose shoes would you choose to walk on for the day?

@Watercup-It's hard enough just to walk around in mine, I don't want to trade places with anyone.

I'm sensitive to certain topics I suppose because I grew up in a family where I never quite felt I fit in. And people were always trying to change me, for my own good. They wanted me to dress different, be more sociable, etc etc. Because they were all very extroverted. But I'm an introvert by nature. Still I wanted to fit in at school and at home. And I wasn't very happy with my inability to conform. Then I went away to college and met people who were as weird as I was. I cut my hair off, went natural, and it sparked a family intervention. LOL.

But I found the concern was mostly false. Me being different made them uncomfortable because they could not understand how I could be happy, if I was not like them. But they have learned to love me despite my weirdness.

So my point is, the concern I hear people expressing for fat people and their health, is it sincere? Because not all fat people have health issues. Some are healthier than thin people. Could it be instead that society is just disgusted by their audacity to be fat. How dare they be fat and happy? But if no one commented, would these fat people have an issue with themself? I was just fine with who I was until the world told me, that it was unacceptable.

I wonder about the sincerity too. Like, what's it to you? As a person who smokes, I get to hear all about the "concerns" people have for MY HEALTH. I think the concerns are just a mask of disgust, nobody actually cares.

Yikes. She's only 32? No, WC, she does not look good for 32. I've seen the show once and thought she was in her 40's.

As for overweight people, I don't care if you're genetically predispositioned, it's all about what we choose to be.

There are many people who are obese who turn their lives around and become personal trainers. There are athletes who become obese. It's all about structure, preference and discipline.

IKR, I thought she was older too. She looks way older than 32, maybe thats why she ended up with Sugarbear who is in his late 40s or something.

You know I was thinking about this a few months back. Because so many people talk about obese people like it's a fear, and their reaction seems to be similar to people who are disfigured or sick. I wondered if people fear because it's something that reminds us of our own mortality, or maybe it's something hardwired into our brains, just a predisposition to avoid anyone who seems unhealthy. Darwinism? Keep the best genes moving forward, or is it an instinct that encourages us to avoid anyone who might be a burden, there are plenty of primitive cultures that would leave their elderly to die, rather than caring for them.

It just seems like the way a lot of people talk about this, they often have a personal irrational reaction like they??re offended by it. I don't totally understand, makes me wonder why it bothers people so much, when it doesn't personally effect them. This puzzles me.

Very smart. I believe so too. Something about the dark side of humanity, of illness and obesity.

It's just very controversial though.

Good example I agree. There's a weird obsession on dxpnet with race, gender roles, age, social class, and weight. I've never encountered so many -isms online. Anyways I'm not trying to be all self righteous like I don't judge others. So I hope it doesn't come across that way. But I struggle with weight issues like any other woman. And some treat it as if a person has some type of moral deficit if they're overweight.

I honestly don't think its an issue with people online alone, I mean the people who voice these opinions are members of the same society we all live in. Its just that they don't have the platform o

Personally, I've never had a problem with a woman who had a few extra pounds to be pleasantly plump. Not too keen about the stick figure thin ones. It makes me feel like I need to feed them something before they die. I don't think I could go for one as large as June though. I wish I could say that it's because I really have a deep and heart-felt concern for her health but the truth is, I'm a little shallow and as crude as this is going to sound, people her size just don't look appealing to me at all. What I'm really afraid of is that someone like that would roll over on me. Or fall down and not be able to get back up on their own.

I'm not opposed to being friendly with an overweight person at all but romance probably won't be an option.

I am sensitive to other people's weight issues. It may be dietary, life style or hereditary, but there are a number of health conditions which lead to obesity and results in maintaining a health weight difficult even with medications. I always remind people of this when criticizing others for their weight. Also, weight is NOT easy to loose and people become easily distressed over what they view as weight loss not progressing fast enough. This is a double edged sword, especially for someone who eats as a coping mechanism. No, I don't fall into this category. I'm at the other end of the spectrum.

All you need is determination and motivation. People gone talk shit about you regardless. Only thing that matters is what "you" plan to do about it. All that other shit is extra. You can eat whatever the fuck you wanna eat, even if it's not in moderation. If you over eat, then you know you have to over workout. Put you some gangster music in your ear to give you that motivation you need to do that extra rep. It goes down when I workout. People start hearing gun shots and swear I just murdered somebody.

On some real shit, yall not bitch made. You are a human being meaning the skies aint even the fucking limit. Getcho mother fuckin ass on that GOT damn weight bench, and piss the devil off. I don't give a fuck if you have to roar and beat on your chest like a goddam ape. You go ape shit and lose that weight. I have spoken.

But I digress. The NWO is poisoning our food and water supply. Because of that, EVERYBODY is prone to EVERYTHING, not just obese people. Wake the fuck up.

And good afternoon.

I think those who are most obsessed with their weight are usually the ones who end up being overweight. I had a gf in high school. She was tall, big-boned, but within heathy weight. She tried to starve herself to look thin, but every time it backfired. She got bigger and bigger and bigger and now I think she qualities as being obese.

Yikes, that's scary. Kind of sounds like she's built similar to the way I am. I know I will never be able to lose weight by not eating. The metabolism slows down too much and then I start getting lethargic and it's not pretty. If I have a few vanity pounds to trim off I actually have to consume more calories and then burn off by working out to crank up my metabolic rate.

Yesterday my ex husband was telling me about this guy from his home country, Saudi Arabia. Apparently his relatives were watching as Khalid Mohsin Shaeri, an obese man weighing a massive 600kg, was being airlifted to a hospital in Riyadh. The Saudi king, King Abdullah had to intervene as this guy has been unable to leave his bedroom in almost 3 years. His house had to be demolished just to get him out!!

Anyways, that got me curious & I googled because 600kgs is scary & I believed that this guy must be the biggest person that ever lived. I was wrong! According to Guinness World Records, the heaviest man in medical history was American, Jon Brower Minnoch who weighed a scale shattering 700kgs. He died in 1983. Blown away.

The same guy also broke the record for biggest weight loss after losing 927 lbs(but regained it and died afterward). DAMN. And evidently he & I were born the same day! Libras & our extremes...sigh.

WC, I couldn't agree more with your perspective on this issue. Ignoring the reality of morbid obesity is as maladaptive & misguided as harassing those afflicted.

Honey Boo-Boo's mom appears decades beyond her years, and there are valid reasons. She admittedly had her first child at 15 & has spent her entire life on welfare. Obesity is an afterthought since she also shows signs of tooth decay & premature graying/aging, which can be considered hallmarks of impoverished life style s & neglected health(in the Western world, anyway).

In any case despite the obvious lack of education & prior status, she seems to be a great mom, as well hilarious from the little I've seen of their TV show.

Wow that's interesting, I didn't know that he lost weight & gained it back. I'll google him.

I don't see why a person's weight has to come up into conversation at all?

Same, people seem to disguise the fact they're being judgmental and rude by pretending they care about the health of the overweight individual. (and then of course there are the other people who just bluntly say what they think) but if June is happy with her current weight and appearance, why should other people be speaking about it. (and even if June was openly unhappy with her weight, it's her business, so therefore people still shouldn't speak about it)

People don't mind their business, period. Anyone who is a little different will feel the heat, that's how it is. It's not only fat people that get hard time, smokers, etc, get it too.

I read most of this thread, and I'm opinionated so here it is.

Almost everyone in my large family is..well..large! Ha! So as a tiny girl, my mother drilled it into my head to stay skinny. And I have. "you'll break the cycle". It's one of my biggest fears.. Getting fat. How crazy is that? But none the less, I feel programmed to keep the scales at a certain number.

I also feel like morbidly obese people just "gave up". Stopped giving a shit. As a society, we consume many more calories than needed. Glutony, over indulgence, - I think it's like an addiction.. A drug.. More is more. More food, more money, more possessions.
I don't "judge" harshly. Who doesn't have demons? Doesn't define you as a person..but people are gonna talk, regardless..about everything. Hardly anyone minds their own business. Is it right/fair? Probably not, but we eat that gossip up too.

People lie because of the pussification of our society.

Many people (not all) are fat because they're lazy, gluttonous, and self centered. All of which are qualities that are going to be brought to attention and ridiculed because these are not desirable qualities to have.

I generally don't make it a point to obsess whether someone is overweight or not, I do not make rude comments, nor will I lie about how they truly look. But when I see that one is morbidly obese due to shitty eating habits, it IS annoying.

Why? It's a goddamned burden to our healthcare system. At the rate we're going, in 10 years, over half of Americans are going to be type 2 diabetics because of their shitty eating habits. It's annoying that these same lazy douchebags treat their children the same way and they in turn are also becoming obese. Nothing like having high cholesterol, signs of early heart disease, and adult onset diabetes at the age of 12.

It's just so ridiculously sad that a large portion of obesity in this country is due to laziness and CHOOSING to remain uneducated and ignorant to what prevents this. Props to those who learn and change, but so many know/learn and just don't bother changing.

To each their own, but this bullshit is going to cause even more strain on the healthcare system in the near future. So many current health issues are caused by shitty eating and lack of exercise. So many cancers, cases of diabetes, cholesterol, and heart disease caused by obesity can all be prevented without pills and numerous doctor's visits if they just went the fuck outside and ate some sort of vegetation once in awhile.

The biggest aggravation is that the entire issue has a very simple solution, yet most choose not to do it.
