Real.

I had a fake tree only once and that was because I was pregnant and my due date was Christmas Day and I didn't want the trouble of a real tree.

It wasn't the same.

Real trees are a lot more work. You have needles everywhere, they are always too tall or the trunk is too crooked so be sure to have a saw handy, a good tree stand a a vacuum cleaner.

One year, my entire tree fell and half my ornaments were shattered. After that, I learned how important it was to anchor the tree with some fishing line.

The cat likes to climb it.

It is usually so dead by Christmas Day that I'm afraid turning on the lights will be a fire a hazard.

But nothing beats dragging the kids out in the snow to find the perfect tree or the smell of fresh pine in the house. It's part of Christmas.

Controversial.

As I think fake, only because I find it a shame to grow a tree. Cut it down, all for the sole purpose of hanging a few baubles on it over a few weeks.

It's sad.
Damn your war on Christmas!

Some people actually use a potted tree and replant it in the spring. I guess that would solve the issue.

While I like this idea, where are they planted? In their garden? Over a few years in one garden may not work. Unless there are designated Christmas tree replanting plots?

I been giving some thought about pros and cons between real trees and fake trees. What do you think is better?
Real tree; tradition in my family since I grew up. I STILL buy a freshly cut CHRISTmas tree. When I come in the room after a long day at work, I am greeted by the aroma of pine!!! 😄

🤗 cyber hugs!

Love,

Eva

PS: My tree lights has a music box that plays CHRISTmas music...sometimes drives me bonkers when I'm trying to watch tv and/or play spades on line.. LOL!

Real tree requires some maintenaince. Like keeping it watered to stay green. And you'll have pine needles all over your floor. A pain in the ass if you have carpeting. But they make the room smell nice and citrusy.

Fake tree. Requires assembly. But a fuckload easier. Some already have pre-installed lights.
Op are you talking x-mas tree?

So, shit. Maybe i'm wrong.

Not presumptuous. I got all exited reading his op. I have more plants indoors than pairs of underwear. But I'm a plant nerd...don't mind me.

I have a lot of land so it would work for me.

But it would be difficult in more populated areas.

Yeah it would need to work for someone who has a lot of free space. It's a good idea to implement though. Live tree plant recycling.

That would actually be much better for the environment than a fake tree. Cut one and plant one in its place (or replant).

Real trees are biodegradable, plastic and aluminum ones are not.

You are one of the good ones. Unfortunately, most people are very wasteful and have the "lets get a new one" mindset.

And did you notice how crappy things are built these days? I have a dining room table that I only bring out for large gatherings. It was my great aunt's and has to be at least 60 years old. It is solid wood and in wonderful shape. My aunt still has my grandmother's coach from the 1940's and it's beautiful. It's hard to find furniture like that anymore. Everything falls apart after a few years so we keep buying.

Real trees are only environmentally friendly if they're local.

If you're buying trees native to subarctic climates in Florida, you're doing way more harm than good. The resources needed to get them to you in good condition far outweigh the resources used for one reusable tree.

Your local disposal methods are also a factor. If your community is just dumping them in landfills you're doing no one any favors.

Potted trees only work if you have plenty of land or know someone with private land who wants a tree. You can't just plant them anywhere. It's generally illegal to plant anything on public land. If you don't know what you're doing you can killing the tree by planting it incorrectly at best or introducing non-native or invasive species that can damage the ecosystem at worst.

All so people can follow some pagan superstitious ritual to keep sickness and death out of the home over the winter. Instead of washing their hands and covering their mouth when they hack and cough.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the practice of balloon releasing at weddings etc. Even those who release butterflies at special occasions?

Florida and possibly Hawaiians and other people in the tropics sometimes adapt. Ether get a fake tree or adopt up another kind of tree. Palm trees are the most common. Then decorate it. Or if you live in the desert US. Some may take up a cactus.

I used a cactus before. But I didn't have to cut it. It was potted and I thought it was good enough. 😉

Plastic and Aluminum trees can be reusable in material sense.

With your real trees. At the end of the year you can donate it to become firewood for the homeless

I have environmental studies and I suggest real trees. 1. They convert carbon into oxygen. 2. They're worth money ( depending on type of plant species 3. I suggest planting a native type species depending on your geographic location = less maintenance and easier for them to thrive. Less water consumption. In the summer time, just add mulch or compost around the treetrunk to maintain soil moisture.

Some people here in Florida tried to plant non native pines here and they do poorly here with the constant rain, sun and the marshy like soil.
