Screwed over by the hotel

So I booked a room several weeks ago for my bday weekend. The hotel contacted me and said "sorry our bad we've double booked. Please enjoy this 50% off coupon for your next stay".

Aka they fucked me over because now, for the dates I need, there is no available inventory and everything left is $ 350+ per night since it's the 11th hour. Smh.

What do you mean? I had one try and charge me 250 bucks for being an hour later than what I told them I would be because of a delayed flight. Trying to tell me I should have notified them.

I ended up getting a free night because of the steps I took.

I had already bought our ferry tickets and prepaid for some activities we wanted to do on the island. I'm fuming rn.

It totally is. Yeah I'm gonna call rn and make a stink. But it still won't solve my problem of not having a room for next weekend. I'm not spending $ 700 on hotels, fuck that.

It's pissing me off cause I specifically booked the hotel in off season cause I knew I'd get better rates. Now I'm fucked.

They may get you a room at the price you got. They usually have rooms reserved. Did you prepay?

It's Avalon, Catalina. Tiny island with only so many hotels. The ones still with rooms are $ 350+ per night. When I booked it back in February I spent $ 126 per night. So yeah, I'm fucked.

We stayed there last year and had a good experience so I called them directly and booked through the front desk. Paid over the phone and they emailed me a receipt.

It would be more understandable if I had booked it over a third party site like trivago or Expedia. But I went through them directly.

I was just about to edit my comment when your reply popped up. Yeah it occured to me that even if there were plenty other hotels around, the time spent looking would fuck your weekend royally.

I hear ya, but something else came to mind.

Never been to Catalina so I wouldn't know for sure, but are the beaches open to the public? To the point where you could celebrate your bday there instead? Damn you'd still need somewhere to go at night.

Open to the public, yes. But you can't camp there overnight. Not that I'm above camping/roughing it, but not on the bday weekend. I want room service and white sheets. Sigh.

I'd throw a legal book at them. Obviously there are laws against devious business practices. Tell them how this has given you anxiety and now you might have to file some health insurance claims....with their name on it. You'll get a call back ?

Actually that might work. They can pay the difference between the room I booked with them and what's now available on the island.

Do not accept that - I used to work for a hotel - demand they find you a comparable accommodation and honor your rate

We would have to move people to a sister hotel sometimes due to overbooking and we would have to pay for their room

UH HUH UH HUH!!! It's 2017, even the seagulls can get sued for shitting on ya. Go for it! And consider sex on the beach because it's one of the most amazing experiences you'll ever have. Preferably long after midnight so the risk of getting busted is minimal. It was the brightest idea my Virgo ex from years ago ever had lol.
