It does, I've repeatedly picked it apart and explained why-- because it's science fiction!

Last time I checked, religion and race were not science fiction.

When you choose to display hatred toward race and religion because you think it's science fiction, walking on your toes may be a better option since 12 dead people thought the same as you do.

LIB - I am surprised by your stance on this issue.

I figured you for a "Fuck'em and feed'em fish heads" philosophy on this one.

No, actually it's all the more reason to keep it up.

Lol, you're a Pisces moon I see? Nevermind then, reason and rational thinking is lost on you.

How do you feel about women from the West being made to wear veil when they visit certan Islamic states? Should the people in these countries also practice same type of 'mindfulness' towards us? Or do we have to do all the sacrificing cuz they're, ya know, insane?

I saw you and Seraph addressed me. Give me a bit to read through stuff and have dinner and I'll be back 🙂

Did you put Vegeta in it? Cuz you gotta have Vegeta.

Obviously. I cannot find a better mix for any type of soup. Snaps me back to life after a long cold.

Look at that smug cook though..what about cooks over the world who don't have so awesome moustaches? Surely they feel less than human. Stupid Vegeta.

@LIB

Ok, looked through the 4 comics. I see it as comedy. What part of it? The way it's drawn. I don't care if there was any other stereotype drawn, including those that would fit with my views. To make it personal for me, I can envision all of those angled at agnostics, since this is a philosophy I hold dear to me. Would I be upset? Probably I'd have a knee jerk reaction to it. Would it go further? No, it wouldn't. I understand there are people who mock agnostics and it's their right to do so. The way I see mocking in general, it will happen on all levels, with every category of people. Is one form more dangerous than other? No, the form in itself isn't. It's still a cartoon. But there would be a stronger reactions to some cartoons than others.

You assume that the only people who find humor in this are also the ones who are completely prejudiced with race and religion. I am not one of those people. I can't talk for others obviously. But I can't be the only one detached from it and just looking at any art form as an art form. Like the difference between modern art against classical art. It comes down to taste.

So the question behind it in my mind is..was the cartoonist's intent to bring conflict? Was the magazine formed of people who had a very focused agenda to do harm to one specific category of people? Did they do active harm? Killing someone with the comics? No. Who did that? The other party who might have misread the intent. Should they have known better because they were mocking sensitive matters? Yes. Could they have anticipated that type of a reaction? No. Is the reaction warranted for the type of offense? No, it's blown out of proportion by a lot.

In real life, if you find something funny, do you laugh or do you turn to the person next to you without laughing, careful to explain to them why you find it funny? You laugh. And a majority of people laughed over this or the magazine wouldn't be in business. Think the people who took to the streets over it are doing it because they are racists or because they see this as a dirrect infringement of the freedom of speech?

That freedom would allow me to write any material and market it, as long as I am acting in the confines of law. Would I offend people? Probably, no matter what the topics are. Does that give people the right to come and kill me? No. Being offended isn't a synonim to taking the law in your hands and acting on it.

Posted by LetltB
I'd like to see Damnata walk through Harlem in New York with that Pope sign in broad daylight....IN AMERICA.

Why would I do that? Since for me it isn't propaganda nor do I try to change people's minds. People going to work and me being in their face with it? This magazine wasn't in their face. You could choose to browse it or not. Choose to not glance over things you find insulting or not. Obviously in real life people wouldn't have the liberty to do that, walking around me parading around a big sign
Just so you know, your comment sounds a lot like what Sutekh replied to Seraph in the brown topic..when he told him he'd like to see him as a white male late at night in a black neighborhood.

Do you assume by default something bad would happen to me? How's that for intolerant? Would you not agree with me expressing my views and having safety in doing so? I would deserve something bad to happen to me? Because that's the angle you're using on this.

Once again this isn't about how me or you or any other posters see as humor or good taste. This is about a deliberate attempt to quiet someone who holds a different perspective. If you know your personal truth does not reflect in those comics, you wouldn't be offended, would you? And if it does, can you kill someone if they represented something in a way you can relate to? Either way, as you said..fight swords with swords. So the solution is fight a comic with a gun? How does that make sense?

You can call me cowardly or address any other insult at me, it's your right to feel that way and call me names if you so wish. And we still live in a sane society where those insults wouldn't get me annoyed enough to lose it in a way to inflict bodily harm on you or anyone disagreeing with me. Us disagreeing is only a part of the variety in people. It's not a nefarious agenda for you or me..we just see good taste or humor or types of expression differently.

I will add that I understand how it's plausible that a segment of people laughing at these comics are also incredibly racist..but there's another segment who just like edgy cartoons. Depictions out of the ordinary. Is it a capital punishment for them to have this taste?

Unless anyone can prove beyond certainty that the magazine's agenda wasn't satire or expression but its purpose was to actively harm every category they mocked, in a real tangible way..then all the hate speech philosophy is moot. You can't just stand for some types of freedom and not others, because the latter ones offend your beliefs. You either stand for any type of freedom or you don't. Can't pick and choose which you agree with, because they are geared towards the majority and not only to you personally.

I think it comes down if you see it as hate speech or not. I don't. You do. It's not a right or wrong issue because it boils down to personal preference. Either way, I can't condone violence and blame the victim because the risk of losing your life over this is more offensive to sanity and stability in a society than drawing an edgy cartoon.

Hope I made my stance clear. You asked for clarification on my mindset. Not trying to persuade you with how I see things, just explaining it better if I managed that at all.

Oh wow, you cannot talk without insulting me?

Cool, I support freedom of speech.

I wrote that in..7 to 10 minutes I think.

I will reply if I am not spinning around the same idea again. If there's anything new for me to reply. If I already replied to something you will ask again, I will bypass it. Just because I can't go in circles again.

If not, I will leave you to the insults. I don't have to save face against anyone btw 😉

Also, I'm not a racist, no matter how adamant you are to make me seem so. This is familliar teritory with spinning out of control and resorting to insults. I've seen it before so..no offense here. Sorry if you can't cope with different perspectives.

my husband believes it's not right to make fun, but well, freedom of speech.

lots of his colleagues are talking about it. I'm sure lots of Europeans are, all over, and even all the way to the North American continent and Asia.

plus in all honesty, you can't control people's "actions". Making satire is a fine line and art it seems. probably only SouthPark got it right, or one of the few.

Your truth doesn't insult me LIB, truth in general doesn't insult.

There was no playing victim or looking for support. Did you see me cry and ask people for help? As if..but clever spin there.

Not spinning, I've said my peace. Won't detract from it.

Obviously you disagree.

It's all there is to it. But if you want to see me as a racist and go against that..have at it. I'd go against racists as well. It's just..there's no need to defend myself against anything I see as invalid..namely your accusations. Label me a coward for not complying with your image of me 🙂. Ok..so at dinner last night this very topic came up by the group. I just listened (believe it or not..lol) What I heard corresponded to my disgust with those who hate, the responsibility of those who choose to hate and the outcome whether that be bad or good, and no matter how great the hate is, the bottom line is respect for ALL fellow human beings, and their freedom to practice whatever religion their heart and soul belongs to. It is their right and their freedom to do so.

The responsibility of all human beings is to accept that just as we must for ~responsible~ freedom of speech. It does not mean it's ok to publicly belittle their beliefs while at the same time profiting from that hate. Freedom of Speech is not for sale..people died to give us that freedom and as they were dying I'm sure didn't envision someone profiting off of their deaths.

Selling, advertising & profitting from hate toward ones religion, skin color or way of life is NOT what freedom of speech is about.. you can spin it anyway you'd like to cover your ass Damnata, as we all know your proud of your ignorance to these facts and as a result of this same ignorance, it got people killed. They knew they were in danger, they knew WHY they were in danger, and made a choice to be hateful & irresponsible and die. There is no sympathy for people who make really stupid and hateful choices. None of what I just shared is debatable imo. You can't debate the truth.

Anyway...as in all the nasty back and forth race threads...I'll end my 2 cents with the same song I always do.

Freedom of speech will not end no matter how many of you find any article/cartoon/anything in poor taste. No matter what our opinions are individually, you cannot slam someone for expression because you cannot cope with something that offends your good taste. Your right to have an opinion should never include the right to silence others you don't agree with. There's space for everyone on this planet.

I wish it were just poor taste, or I wouldn't be wasting a minute of my life defending my right to tell you that advertising & profiting from HATE is wrong.

... no good can come out of Muslims moving into secular societies.

1. I think we had this before: how many people a year come to death because of drunken drivers vs. how many death causes root at medical authorities?

2. If Socrates, Galileo, Jeanne d??Arc, Nelson Mandela or Jesus of Nazareth have to fullfill their fate, they do it. Rationalisations of their enemies is nothing but "dancing cannibals" around the pot.

3. This world is always pregnant with synthesis. Some rat is the thesis. Some cat is the antithesis. You can diminish how much you want. Next antithesis is around the corner.

4. I'm too old for that.

For your knowledge, the French have always had the freedom to speak. They didn't fight for it like Americans, or ignored it as a way to live in a peaceful society like Canadians. Since way before your great great great great grandparents were born, immediately someone could hold a quill, French society has not had qualms about saying what they thought.

Wow..a real history buff there ^^eh? What an insult to all frenchmen who sacrificed their lives smh
Jynga...for "your knowledge"..

Right to freedom of speech and expression
Concepts of freedom of speech can be found in early human rights documents.[4] England??s Bill of Rights 1689 granted 'freedom of speech in Parliament' and is still in effect. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, adopted during the French Revolution in 1789, specifically affirmed freedom of speech as an inalienable right. The Declaration provides for freedom of expression in Article 11, which states that:

The free communication of ideas and opinions is one of the most precious of the rights of man. Every citizen may, accordingly, speak, write, and print with freedom, but shall be responsible for such abuses of this freedom as shall be defined by law.

World War I brought with it enormous casualties, an approximated 1.3 million French deaths occurred within the years 1914 and 1918. France has made a tremendous evolution since its occupation by the Nazi-sanctioned Vichy regime during the Second World War, which crippled the country??s economy, international status, and human capital.

On Oct. 4, 1958, France adopted its current Constitution under the Fifth Republic and has since maintained a hybrid presidential-parliamentary governing system. Though The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789 is not included within France's constitution, it is cited in the Preamble as the country??s standard for citizens?? guaranteed rights. In Article 11 of the Declaration, freedom of speech for French citizens is established. There is a noted warning on misuse of that freedom, however, as the French government has exploited in its search for control.

—Article 11. The free expression of thought and opinions is one of the most precious rights of man: thus every citizen may freely speak, write, and print, subject to accountability for abuse of this freedom in the cases determined by law.??

Free Speech
After the Second World War widespread panic overwhelmed European countries, and in order to prevent a recurring genocide, various countries passed legislation that outlawed anti-Semitic language. France is included within this category of countries and has implemented laws attempting to restrain xenophobia. The Legal Project, an organization created to protect researchers who focus on terrorism, describes France's Press Law of 1881 as a principal piece of legislation against hate speech.
—Section 24 criminalizes incitement to racial discrimination, hatred, or violence on the basis of one's origin or membership (or non-membership) in an ethic, national, racial, or religious group. A criminal code provision likewise makes it an offense to engage in similar conduct via private communication.??

Most recent media case on HATE

"The most recent case on hate speech occurred in France during January 2013, a lawsuit between the social media site Twitter and the French Union of Jewish Students (UEFJ). In October of 2012, the UEFJ threatened to sue Twitter as a racially insulting hashtag, #UnBonJuif (translated to mean —a good Jew??) began to gain popularity on French Twitter streams. The UEFJ??s lawsuit demanded the identification of the individuals responsible for the anti-Semitic tweets. While Twitter did not concede to this request, the site did block most of the infamous hashtags from view. On Jan. 24, 2013, a French court ruled in favor of the Jewish student's organization and ordered the social media site to turn in any information that might help identify the account holders responsible for the racist comments. Twitter was given fourteen days to hand over data to the UEFJ but did not concede. Because of Twitter??s non-compliance, the UEFJ in conjunction with French Jewish organization —J??Accuse?? decided in mid-March of 2013 to file a criminal complaint against Twitter for 38 million Euros, the equivalent to $ 50 million U.S. dollars."

Do you think it's possible for everyone to hold themselves accountable for the things the say and draw? Neither do I..

So what do we do? Well, we can create laws that hold them accountable for what they say. To do so however, means that freedom of speech, and the laws that regulate it, would end up in the hands of the powerful. Meaning.. That laws would, or could, be created to only allow the words the powerful see fit to be spoken.

It's a thin line.

@LIB also.. Thoughts?

Makes one wonder why the offended Muslim parties didn't follow

the law and do the same, when seeking "damages"--

The last time they sued was almost a decade ago (2006, 2007)-- but it wasn't for

HATE, as you put it.

They sued because they thought no one should be able to draw the Prophet

because it was against their religion.

"Just because Muslims refuse to portray the prophet, there's no reason why non-

Muslims should feel compelled by the same restrictions and fear retribution if

they go ahead with picturing Islam??s founder," the Independent wrote in 2013."

But it wasn't just their religion that was mocked.

Everyone was up for grabs.
