You forget the Christian Crusades?

How come that's not noted?

How come we only choose to this, a misrepresentation of Muslims...

You mean the Catholics.

They stopped doing that about 700 years ago, iirc-- give or take a century.

500+ years actually.

The last one was in 1572 in France (St.Bartholomew's Day massacre), when the Catholics slaughtered 3000+ French Protestants after the wedding of Henry of Navarre.

Ahh... take almost 2 centuries, then.

Thanks for illustrating this, as well as clarifying.

oh, btw, jw didn't "leave" office, i believe he was voted out, kicked out or whatever other phrase seems approptiate

the fact that he even made it into the oval office proves that the system is all about who you know and how much money can be shuffled from one pocket to another.

Who is "jw"?

If you mean Bush Jr, he had already served 8 years--

No one can serve more than that in the US presidency.

He was re-elected as many times as the law would allow.

Heh...

i can't believe that some people are actually blaming the victims. it's the same when people say why did she wore tight dress, otherwise she probably wouldn't be raped. so we should accept to live in a fear that our behavior could provoke someone so much that it's kinda understandable to kill us? when the other party has always the choice to ignore.

accepting that fear is dangerous because the line what behavior is provocation and what isn't, is moving, and then someone could feel provoked if you wear a funny hat. if that's the world you wanna live in, than yeah, you should blame them.

Well said.

These were cartoons, hello!

The editor of the mag himself said he'd rather die for what he believed in than compromise so I choose to respect that... using someone's death as am excuse to talk about the world I'd rather see seems crass, one reason why I stay away from politicians for one.

I'm all about courage, defiance and standing up for something, but it doesn't include hate.

What about the maintenance guy, the guy who was there for a meeting from a different organization, the cops and all others who were there by coincidence? Hopefully this business is going to give ALL 12 of these victims families compensation for a very poor choice of one man.

Since when is FUNNY HATEFUL? Some of the posters in this thread need to go back to older threads in dxp and look at their passion shown toward other posters here who post hateful threads and responses. Now they are cheering on hate?

This thread is as hypocritical as it gets imo.

Again...FUNNY & HATEFUL don't mesh together unless you want to start a war with any group/race.

Whether or not it was a bad choice remains to be seen in the aftermath of it all. You never know what kind of legacy he could leave behind from here.

Well I guess we'll all see how "funny" the next cartoon is that comes out next Wednesday...I just can't picture family members of the victims at funerals laughing. Death as a result of bullying and publicly advertising hate against religion may be a wake up call..or not, like I said, it keeps the murdering terrorists away from my country for the time being. I'm good with that.

This is the kid of pictures you could see in Charlie Hebdo

Translation : "Mahomet, a star is born"

Translation : "Radical islam | moderate islam

Translation: "the pope in paris, the french have become as dumb as niggers"

It's the only clever one. Switch Pope with the Swedish Royal Family in that pic and I can totally relate. The others were just tasteless, but I suspect a lot is lost in translation since I don't live in France and don't get the reference.

You need to get over yourself and understand that you don't have to find it funny or tasteful.... Srsly what's with the taste-police in here?! It's not your cup of java? look the other way.

i was looking at the dominant religion in France. It's Catholicism and then islam:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_France<BR>
"Islam is the second-most widely practiced religion in France behind Roman Catholicism by number of worshippers. With an estimated total of 5 to 10 percent of the national population, France has the largest number of Muslims in Western Europe (European Turkey and European Russia each have higher Muslim populations).[1][2] The majority of Muslims in France belong to the Sunni denomination.[3]"

it's a war between religions again, just like the old days. History repeating itself in a way.

You are correct, my opinion of this hateful group you support doesn't matter.

My POINT is..like what some others here have said, you want to play with fire, die by fire. Play by the sword, die by the sword. You reap what you sow..etc. It's a CHOICE.

I don't feel sorry for people who intentionally make poor choices based on hate, bullying etc., nor do I support HATE or think HATE is funny. Yet...none of you can explain to me WHY you feel these cartoons are funny. Because like the author you are all COWARDS and hide behind a pc.

That's where I stand. Yet some of you (and you all know who you are) think in one thread you can berate people for hate, yet turn around and support hate which ultimately points to hypocrisy making you all look like complete jackasses.

I knew this would escalate yesterday and I took a breather. I'll take another one for now and "get over myself". I look forward to the responses on each cartoon shown here and WHY some of you haters think each one is funny.

Grow some balls and share won't you? I'm very curious to the responses. (if any)

What you CAN do, however, is take personal responsibility for YOU do, irrespective of what anyone else is doing.

Exactly. Can you explain why the only YOU you are addressing here is the magazine and not the deluded psyche of someone who turns offense into violence? Do you find there is a normal link between being offended and jumping to violence and society should cater to people cuz..well there is no other way is there? They will get offended and they will get violent and it's all our fault. No responsability for them whatsoever.

Posted by seraph
It's 2015. We're old enough and big enough to discriminate between what is and isn't crossing the line when it comes to religious and cultural comedy that takes certain people and parts of the world as its subject matter. Especially those working in the media and who have even the most rudimentary notion of world issues.

Yes, we are old enough and big enough to discriminate between what is and isn't crossing the line. Aren't we also old enough and big enough to discriminate between fiction and reality? Between jokes and a legit attack? Or this part is harder for people to grasp so we fall back on "just do the right thing and hope like hell no lunatic is going to take offense to that"

I do agree with you on common sense and taste however there is no definition for good taste anywhere. Can only measure how succesfull it is by how many people read it. And the majority reading that magazine deemed it was in good taste, since they were still in business. Are you going to go against the majority and define good taste for them from your perspective as a minority? Is that really fair?

It isn't an either/or decision. It's about knowing when and where to draw the line - at home, at work, out on the street, and so on. And it shouldn't take a lot of pondering. If this sort of discernment just isn't prevalent in the mainstream, then the befuddled and bewildered certainly have my sympathies.

You can spend plenty of time defending freedom of speech, and it's easy to do. But how defensible is it really, to actually spend time on another Mohammed/Muslim joke - in print - advertised to the world?

It's time to grow up when it comes to where we point our "freedoms."

You are being exactly the same shade of disrespectful as the article pointing out islamic stereotypes. So now people who understand jokes and can separate fiction from reality are befuddled and bewildered? Fair enough. But should we also be dead because we deserve it?

Again, this kind of humor not being your type, I totally get it. But switch this into a common sense and good taste issue because you need to see the victim as deserving it..yeah, I can't stand for that.

As far as using " " on freedoms to point sarcastically some are more important than others, yeah..your freedom ends where mine begins and viceversa. I don't know everything and neither do you or anyone else but I wouldn't slam the concept of freedoms in general just to make a sarcastic twist. Maybe you are in poor taste here.

NO ONE NEEDS TO FUCKING THINK IT'S FUNNY TO JUSTIFY ITS EXISTENCE. THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO PRINT IT EITHER WAY! Gawd, are you that dumb?

What exactly do you call a choice? That extremist forces should dictate how we should practice freedom of press, or else....? No adult can be this retarded.

"The authors are cowards and hide behind a pic"

It's till a fucking pic! How about being a coward using weapons against people armed with nothing but pens. Grab a fucking pen yourself and get to work!

"If you play with fire", in this case a paper and a pen, you should get shot? How about deporting all Muslims from France, applying your logic you could say that's what them Muslims get for "playing with fire".

They asked for it. They should know radical Islam isn't what should be played with. They play with offense and religion and death. Their braveness should be applauded because they were courting it. This isn't going to be the end of Terrorism. It's the beginning of something dormant since ancient times.

I'd like to see Damnata walk through Harlem in New York with that Pope sign in broad daylight....IN AMERICA.

I don't find any of it particularly funny, but the second cartoon in the series hits pretty close to the mark.
Beck, that Chowdry dude in Britain was supporting those attacks, saying to the effect "you will only have peace when you submit to sharia".
There has been a mere handful of Muslims speaking out against what those gunmen did on Paris, while the general Muslim community remains silent (thus my opinion about the second cartoon).

Interesting. So we can state the difference catholic vs. christians but we put muslims in one category. Is it the Shiite or the Sunnis ?

Good question.

Do you know the answer?

I think it's pertinent.

I've been trying to find out, but as yet, there really

isn't much to go on.

—They spoke French perfectly ??_ claiming to be Al-Qaida.??

Who Trained...

"This was a well-planned attack: the gunmen hit #CharlieHebdo

in the middle of the weekly conference, with all staff present."

"These two degenerates not only assassinated their targets individually,

like ISIS does in lining up Shiites and noncompliant Sunnis to be shot,

they had the balls and skills to leave the building and get away.

When was the last time there was a major terror in the west that didn't

end up with the perpetrators splattered on the ground when it was over?

And where exactly did these guys get AKs and a rocket launcher?"

Does it really matter where the weapons came from? They've shown the world repeatedly what they are capable of. The idiots in Paris said "BRING IT"..and they did.

We are arming muslims and training them...are you really surprised they have these weapons?

And WHY, exactly?

"Because I can! And it's my right! Why should *I* make exceptions for certain cultural attitudes, instead of satirizing THEM the same way I satirize everything else in MY culture?? WE are OK with doing that! WHY aren't THEY??"

Does this attitude make ANY sense?

It does, I've repeatedly picked it apart and explained why-- because it's science fiction! Such consideration that you're talking about is impossible in a free society with so many voices pulling at different directions - writers, artists, attention whores, politicians, etc.

In order for your little utopia of courtesy to work we'd have to assissinate individuality.
