I'm not one to normally hit up DXP for stuff like this, but I'm just curious of the feedback here in regard to some phones. I've read a shit ton of comments section and it's been such a wash I'm not sure what I want to do.

I used to hail Samsung because they make good, durable phones. Downfall is bloatware and the UI.

Because of this, I ventured into Nexus land, pure android, fast updates, and no bloatware. Love it and have been using it for about 5 years now.

Unfortunately, Google has drank the dickbag kool aid and have gone to shit on their hardware and it appears that my Nexus 4 was probably the best phone they made. They seem to have gotten cheap in manufacturing, no matter who, and just shit. I suffered the dreaded bootloop issue in my year old 5x and was not happy. I'd already had to RMA it for warranty work on a faulty screen and I have never really been a fan of LG. I only went with it a second time because the N4 had done so well and I thought maybe they woke the fuck up, but no.

That said, I'm looking to get away from them because the Pixels apparently are having similar hardware bullshit. I use Swappa to find preowned phones and am looking to get something under 300 if possible.

Up for consideration- Samsung S7. Samsung rocks, have played with this phone and it's great. Just not a fan of the UI. But I love having the option of expandable memory again and the waterproofing is a nice bonus. I've heard that it slows down within a year though which is sucktastic.

Considered the Asus Zenfone, but support is shit and I've heard varying issues here or there that were kind of a dealbreaker.

Really am interested in the Oneplus 3, but it's $ 100 more than I can get an S7 for. BUT it's more or less stock android and is great hardware wise. Downside is I'm hearing mixed things on it working on T-Mobile.

I've heard bits about the Moto Z, but have yet to really dig into that one yet as of this post.

My question is, has anyone used a Oneplus and can give feedback on GSM carrier issues?

Long term for S7 experience? Any input on other devices that would be closest to pure android without bloatware?

I'm just being stubborn as fuck because when I get a phone and I plan to use it for several years because I don't do trade in for the latest and greatest every 1.3 years. My N4 was my daily driver for 3-4 years before I had to retire her due to age. I'm really pissed about the 5x because eff having a phone only a year. Prior to smart phones, I had a Samsung thin candy bar phone for 5 years and only changed it because I finally wanted to try something new. When I like what I like, I keep it as long as possible, you know?

Overall, I'm just looking for pure android as possible, good support/updates, and hardware that doesn't die because of incompetence. The rest is just perks.

Have been tempted to say fuck it, get another N4 for shits n giggles and start learning to tinker with custom roms, tbh.

i have had lg smartphones and only lg smartphones.

they are simple and do what they are supposed to do, i don't look for bells and whistles.

my last one lasted me about 3 years and still worked fine, just slow compared to new technology. i still use it for a remote control for my second tv (it even has an ir blaster)

it was around $ 200 at the time.

i got a new one a few months ago, an lg aristo. same price just about.

i don't remember if it was a t-mobile app or an lg app, but i ran it and about 20 minutes later my new phone was a clone of my old one. everything was on it, contacts, pictures, apps. it was flawlessly seamless.

if you don't care about impressing the cool kids but want something useful, i would say lg is a good competitor. never broken one once, and they seem to work fine for me.

my biggest complaint is the charging/wired interface, microusb always gets dirty in my pocket from lint and crap, so charging it is a pain in the ass sometimes, but that's more of an industry complaint.

i'm thinking of getting a wireless charger or something.

download speeds are 60 and upload is a whopping 140 apparently

It's neither a T-Mobile thing or an LG thing. It's an android/google thing. When you sign in under your account, it'll basically copy everything over. Some will even do a basic tap via NFC and do it.

Nokia is back in business. Solid phones. The original Nokia not the subsidiary of Microsoft.
I heard. I just glanced briefly at some specs and it seems okay. They're definitely going with pure Android, but some of the specs were eh.

I've come across some touting the Honor 8. Haven't looked at the software bit yet though.

Idk might be good to look at, they will try to regain the long lost market share and the besy way to do this is to offer a lot of bang for the buck.

No, you were sitting there complaining about hardware and UI issues. Apple dosen’t have those issues so I offered you a potential solution.

Plus, you can jailbreak it like I did and have all the features of iPhone AND Android.

Yes, and I'm still using my 5 year old phone currently. I've kept it as a backup whenever I come across these issues.

Apple isn't immune from its problems either, dear, so don't speak of it like it doesn't happen to them. It's all the nature of technology, it's just up to the companies to do quality control and provide adequate support.

I'm probably going to go down the route of finding a solid device hardware wise, and then just root it and put my own OS on it. Same idea as building your own computer. You have more control over what you've got and how long it lasts.

Agreed. Another thing I'm finding myself hesitating on is finding a phone that ISN'T micro usb. I have all these cables and adapters for C and it's nice having C and the rapid charging capabilities that come with the connector/cables associated. :/

That’s a good idea to root it. However, the processors will be even more bogged down because of it. Making the phone even slower. Even surfing the web is sticky and the pages freeze for a sec or 2.

Do you even know what you're talking about?

Rooting it doesn't do shit, just unlocks it so you can do as you please software wise. It's a matter of what OS you put on it that affects processors and ram. If anything, most phones that aren't pure android are bogged down by bloatware and shitty overlays to the Android OS. It's why I got away from it to begin with- had a Samsung that had the hardware to handle it, but it was bogged down by shitty bloatware that couldn't be removed because it wasn't rooted. Nevermind the shit that carriers install on the phones. It's why I only go unlocked now. I haven't bought a phone directly from a carrier in quite awhile.

Just go on ebay and find an old model BNIB, if you really can't be bothered with the latest models...

I have seriously considered that with the N4 when someone pointed out NIB exist still. I do want something with a more current OS though because I like some of the new features. But I could always root it and put the current OS on it as well.

But I'm the same way- not really all that obsessed with the latest and greatest. Just what I like and what works for me.

Im using it right now to write this message 😀

Apps take up space but UI is great. Great display. Camera.

Battery life. Fast internet :p Etc. This x 6 models are the best.

But if u r a girl I think u should get an Iphone

Please see my previous post in regard to idiot phones.

In regard to Samsung, yeah I'm only hesitating because stock android = win like a mofo. I loff it. Tbh, that's probably the only reason why I'm hesitating.

"This thing is nice af, but man, this UI sucks balls."

Really considering a Oneplus 3 though. Just talked to a few sellers about their LTE connectivity and they didn't have those problems, so I'm hoping it was corrected with an update since then.

I actually do Rocky. I’ve rooted every Android and Windows phone I’ve had. This IPhone too. The problem I had with it was running OS that the phone wasn’t designed to run and pushing speeds that made the phone constantly run hot. The phones didn’t last long because of it. I went through 3 HD2’s and an Amaze in a year. I’ve jailbroken 3 iPhones now and had zero issues

So because you ran the wrong ROM on the phone, that must mean rooting overall is a bad thing?

Gotcha.

I'll keep that in mind for all those out there who have been running rooted phones with custom ROMS that made the phone run much better than the shit that was installed by the manufacturer.

Early this year people were raving about the BLU R1 HD from amazon. The real downfall is they put an ad on your lock screen in order to cell it cheaper?

They say it's an amazing phone for what it is though.
Yeeah, interesting that Amazon would push that crap. It's kinda borderline scary territory though. They're opening the floodgates for that shit.

"Here, we'll offer it for super cheap if you'll let us bombard your phone/Fire tablet with ads!"

I can only imagine what security breaches could happen with that little window they use to put ads on your shit like that. Browser and apps are one thing, but all up in the OS itself? Blegh.

Always the extreme with you. Any rooted ROM you run over the max recommended speed isn’t healthy for your phone. Couple that with a phone protector and it’s not good.

Why even ask if you give 2 fucks about people’s advice?

I don't give two fucks about YOUR advice.

The canned, mindless response of "hur get an iphone!" is far from helpful in any way, shape, or form.

But thanks for trying.

I've just recently got myself a Huawei P9 on contract and I'm very happy with it. Superb camera, runs fast, and it looks good. I was thinking of either going for a Nokia 8 or a Huawei P10, but I can't justify paying so much a month for a phone. The P9 isn't pure Android, like the Nexus devices of course, but it's enjoyable. I like it because I came from an iPhone, and I feel I have so much more freedom with Android.
You really do. I couldn't imagine being tied down to all that shit with Apple, tbh.

I was intrigued by the Huawei Honor 8, but found out that long term, the battery goes to shit faster than it should. Saw some people mention the P9-10, so I may take a gander to see what those are about.

I think I've got my eyes set on a Oneplus 3 though. That thing is a freaking beast for its price point. 6 gigs of ram, ffs. Womp womp on the lack of expandable storage, but it does have a type C cable and fast charging- two things I really have a hard time parting with since I was introduced to it with my 5X.

I'll take a gander at the Huaweis you mentioned though.

That's because it supports rapid charging that Samsung uses on those phones. But everyone's going to be shifting over to type C usb cables in the future. Not just for rapid charging, but because they're capable of audio capabilities which will come in handy because so many companies are getting rid of 3mm jack ports because of this. You can either go wireless, or use the usb type C in order to get your audio via headphones or a speaker. The charge port will be more for charging in that sense.

It hasn't caught on entirely since there still are a lot of phones keeping that 3mm port, but it's stepping in that direction.

On a side note, my 7 year old and 3 year old twins all have Blu advance phones.. not bad phones for 50 $
They aren't for being cheapie phones. But those specs- meh. Totally meant for kids like your example, or people who just don't pay the eff attention to their phones.

I loled when I looked it up after Weeds mentioned it. Definitely a decent bargain phone, but 8gb is nothing anymore storage wise. I loled when I read the specs because it's like wtf processor is this?? I AM TEH CONFUSEDED haha.

It's shitty what happened overall, man. Google was going in the right direction before greed took over. They abandoned their loyal Android users to try to get up there with Apple-eqsue design and marketing and it pissed off a lot of long time users.

"You did what? And you want how much? Eff that." So they abandoned the long time users to jump into mainstream, continued with their shitty hardware and now are leaving the mainstream masses disappointed and unimpressed. Good marketing strategy!

I was considering a Pixel when my 5X turned into a slow asshole, and went digging when it died on me, but people who have owned it for a year already have had multiple replacements due to shitty hardware. Even Google taking over, vs contracting out, didn't do squat to fix it. Sounds like they're going the cheap and fast route and it's sad because they had a good thing going there for awhile.

Blegh.

How's your Pixel been holding up? Why the change back to Samsung?

I just feel like for the money the pixel should be a lot better than it is.. ui wise it seems fine.. a little slow at times, and I don't feel like I push the fone... Bad design with the glass back, horrible camera..

Couple of annoying glitches..

My note 4 lasted until last year.. still works good, minus the fact that it won't read that there is a sim inserted... Probably due to Verizon firmware..
