Posted by Chance_11Yeah, that would be frustrating, too. I'd try to look at it as if they're trying to protect you. But, yeah, that would piss me off as well. Makes you want to call them and say, hey, I'm at Tahoe, there will be charges! Or hey, I'm buying a laptop, you better approve it!
I've been having the opposite problem. My card has been shut off 3 times in the last month when I was using it. Once was while I was in Lake Tahoe..almost understandable but that's the first time they've shut it off when I was in another state. Another time was when I tried to purchase tickets for $ 130 where I live. The last time was when I bought a new laptop about 2 hours away. So, out of state and over $ 100 in your area are now off limits?? Seems a little harsh

Posted by FinbuffI rip them up in little pieces!
What I do, besides the obvious of balancing your check book, which the debit card is attached to, is I save every single credit card receipt each month, and match it to my statement I receive. I'm always wary of identity theft. Whenever you get a statement in the mail that has account information on it, if you throw it away, be sure to shred it, or burn it in the fireplace like I do.

Posted by LeoAquaRulerObviously, I need to make time for that!!!
This is why i love online banking all i have to do is put my thumb on my phone and my bank statements pop up.

Posted by Chance_11I completely understand that! I HATE using credit cards.Posted by truecapWhat pisses me off (probably just a cap thing 😄) is then I have to use my credit card which is already paid offPosted by Chance_11Yeah, that would be frustrating, too. Posted by Chance_11This happened to my parents while we were traveling to Tenn from NJ.

Posted by idkYeah, quick in and out during lunch.
i don't think said criminal intended to use stolen card/info on a long term basis. maybe i'm wrong...

Posted by P-AngelI see the credit applied back to my account. I can't get up there until 4. I've pulled up the account every couple of hours and there are no more charges. I think the first call was legit, the second was probably pretend just trying to get info.
I only read the OP and your last entry .... sounds to me like your card info was never stolen, rather the whole thing is a fraud.
They first tell you your card's been compromised to get you to cooperate .. then call back wanting information from you.
wtf kind of bullshit have you stumbled across? I hope you've already gone to your bank.

Posted by WhiteChocolateAgree wholeheartedly!
I always call my bank a few days before I go out of state to let them know I'll be out of state or spending any significant time outside my area code and plan to drop significant coin.
I've had a new card sent to me twice. Once when Home Depot was compromised and once when Target was compromised. I'd rather my bank be vigilant than apathetic when it comes to security.

Posted by CaptainPimpWhat is it with Cali?
Same thing happened to my gal, like 3 weeks ago. Also used in CALI. She got called right away. They used her card at a 7/11 i think?
Got gas n stuff.
The supernatural bro's, frauding cards n stuff xD.

Posted by WhiteChocolateI do the same.

Posted by Chance_11...are you not aware that you should be notifying your bank when you're going out of state to make purchases? Bigger purchases also outside of your normal purchase area sends up red flags.

Posted by truecapTbh, yes, you sound stupid.
Okay, so the call I got earlier from the bank was all nice, nice, didn't ask me for any information, just wanted to verify whether I made purchases to blah, blah, blah. They froze the account until I can get up there after work and fill out paper work and get a new card.
So, NOW, I get a call from them claiming they are with the Fraud Division and can't speak to me further until I verify my zip code.
Do they think I'm just flat out STUPID?
*smdh*

Posted by rockyroadicecreamThe first call was from the bank itself. I did verify it. The second call was the fishy one and I didn't give them any information.Posted by truecapTbh, yes, you sound stupid.

If you aren't sure, you take that number they called you with and call your bank's customer service and verify that this is a legit number from the fraud department.
I just had to deal with this recently and wasn't entirely too sure if the number I had a call from was actually the fraud department, so I called my bank's customer service department and they not only verified, but relayed the fraud issue to me since the fraud department opened an hour later than CS.click to expand

Do criminals not realize when they're using it out of state that it sends up red flags? Truthfully, they probably don't even know what state I live in.
Now I have to go get a new card, reset all my bills to the new card, and deal with all that crap. SUCKS.
With the electronic banking age, sometimes I don't pull up my bank account and check charges. Lesson of the story, check you bank statements regularly!!!!!
Okay, vent over.
