That would be fun to do for a year!
Absolutely 😎

Kind of aiming for a lifetime m'self πŸ˜†
Wow! I think that's a brave thing to do!

I see it more as a holiday destination for me. Like owning a cabin in the woods kinda thing. Fuck the knitting and sewing bit though. Too boring! Everything else though!

Would it be family thing for you or more communial with other families?

hehe nah it's not that brave...

if I fail I'll just start again elsewhere.

No stressh/ but yeh, it's a personal project- I have no family to consider πŸ˜„

MAYBE if I enjoy the set up and learn enough I'll consider letting others buy in and start my own casual commune.

At the very least, a community will need to be nearby so I can trade and barter... πŸ€“

Scorpio, oh scorpio... where for art thou, Scorpio...

I dream of my scorpion life partner building a life like this for ourselves....

if Virgo straightens up, he seems to be down for a similar life style . we've talked about getting a van and spending a year together on the road. we've also talked about moving to Oregon, Canada, or even Japan or someplace like that... it's nice to share a dream like that with someone. what a holistic life I can only dream of right now. it will happen tho! I just feel it!!

I used to hang out with some buddies who lived in the middle of the desert.

It was so fun and I naturally gravitate towards that life style it's just comes naturally

Basically all you need is water, trees, and sunshine and of course a basic agricultural background
Fabulous!

Yes I've lived completely off grid in the desert here myself for about 6months. But that was zero power etc, all wood burning only and well water.

It's a bit different to the topography and environment where I'll be putting down roots now tho.

Solar panels and or hydro will be an advantage πŸ™‚

More options hopefully.

If I start studying my Environmental Science degree soon I'll use that, but aiming to borrow skills from people in my life who've already been there- done that tooeh 😎

best wishes and positive energy your way!! I firmly believe that if I keep working on myself as a person, try my best, surround myself only with people who uplift me, and work towards my life's purpose, that this too will follow. even tho I am unmarried and have no children, i feel the distinct comfort in knowing I'm meant to be a good partner and mother some day. I dig this kind of life style bc I'm really self sufficient as it is and would love to be able to live off the land. I guess that's why I am attracted to both Scorpios and Boy/Eagle Scouts... it's sexy when a man can keep us alive in survival situations or shit just bc he can!! it's beautiful to work/live like this. the rewarding feeling you get from the hard work put into your home is priceless. I love what the lady what saying about her LOVE for doing "simple" things like making and weaving yarn or whatever. I already love to crochet and work with my hands and my list of hobbies and interests is always growing! I want my own chicken coop and chickens SOOO bad one day and definitely an extensive garden. I love the shows where men surprise their partners with fantasy tree houses for yoga or whatever... ugh... le sigh...

I want to watch this video and it's bizarre that it's not available for viewing from Canada, because it's about Canadians who are living off grid! I will try to find it somewhere! πŸ™‚

well that's ridiculoush! 😑

I hope you find it, really fascinating little doco- and very cool ideas.

Lemme know what you think 😎

I hope so too!

If the price for solar panels comes waaaay down, I have a shot at living at least partly off grid. I have a well and lots of firewood sources and my power needs are fairly low. I feel vulnerable on grid, particularly during power outages which happen a few times a year here.

@CopperDove sounds like a plan.

In the doc they talk a little about cost etc sort of thinking about investing thousands of dollars in solar panels - it's like paying for 30years of electricity UPFRONT which I really like the sound of that! πŸ˜†

If you have any inclination that direction and as you sayeh, you already have some resources in place then YESH why not!?

We can compare notes when we get to that point too! Lol

I'll be able to rent or buy the documentary online, I just confirmed, so I'll definitely be watching soon! πŸ™‚ I'm looking forward to it.

I agree with the long term way of planning things, so big cost at first, but it can pay off. Definitely worth considering as long as I can manage the maintenance, and have help with it which I probably can with some of the people in my community who are getting into this.

It would be cool to compare notes!

I'm thinking it would be a good entry project to run the pump system for my well on solar power, if possible, at least in part. The problem I face is that my water needs filtration that's more complicated than some wells need (thanks to things that are present in the water), so that adds to the power needs, but likely not by much.

Oh goody okayeh! Hope you enjoy it and are as inspired as I was.

One of the main things I took from this was how much I had to learn, also how unique solutions and approaches living off grid can be.

So starting off with a pump system via solar is a great first project. Because once you have that under your belt other projects and desires to find new things to do will unfold!

Also relying on others for help etc very much a way to generate your own community - quid pro quo sharing resources and knowledge (something I personally crave lol) without losing that connection is key and probably a BIG PART of the whole experience.

I'll watch it soon and get back to you for sure. πŸ™‚

I like getting ideas to get a sense of what's needed and to see how creative people can be so I relate. Definitely I can imagine that there's an endless amount to learn.

Yes, true, if one project works, it makes others more possible.

So true about how involving other people can help to generate a community and it makes it more likely that something can go ahead. Doing it all on one's own is admirable but a lot harder. Whichever way you decide to go about it, I'm excited for you because already you know that you likely can swing it based on your experience so far. πŸ™‚

My initial plan is using shipping containers- I had found some recyclables available for about $ 2500.00 each,

but on second thought going with brand new.

Depending on size, you can find them fitted out ready for connection to power, water/ plumbing etc only $ 12k - possibly including shipping depending on area.

This article talks a little bit about this too-

That is great that he has that setup in operation!

I watched the documentary recently! πŸ™‚

I like how realistic the depiction is, meaning they don't underplay the amount of work one needs to be able to take on to set things up and maintain them. For me, it might be a tad easier because maybe I can use existing setups (my well for example) and covert them, at least in part, to self sufficient methods. There's a business in my area that switched to solar power recently and they likely will have some good tips and resources.

For heat in my house (which isn't tiny, but it's small and one story and mostly an open plan), I have enough firewood sources on my property to keep myself going for many years.

Hey not a problemo, I'm hoping that by sharing - peeps who know more than I do will post and learn me some skillz πŸ˜†

I was gonna post on SurvivalistBoards but I don't know anyone on there - so the topic would've died...

Here's something that I find interesting - mowing grass with a scythe, using a technique that is easier on the body than most methods (it's based on tai chi) using an Austrian scythe. I will be learning this one day. You can get scythes custom made - I have one but I have to learn how to hone and sharpen it properly.

I'm perfectly capable of doing this solo. I'll get me a dog for company and be happy. However, a lovely woman to share it with would be wonderful

This is EXACTLY what I envision- but there will be underground cellar too. Maybe earthbag rooms on each wing... MAYBE bury the container and have a green roof.

This is one of the cooler ones I've seen! I had hoped to find more pictures of it online, showing the interior, but I can only find the one you posted.

How big would you ideally want your place to be?

It's good isn't it? Thinking maybe two main containers and a third for storage... There are so many designs tho you're just limited by imagination and budget πŸ˜†

That seems like an ideal size. I was reading about someone who put two together and created 800 square feet of living space, which is bigger than my place. My house is 720 sq feet, and I have a shed, so that might be similar to what you'll create only yours will be much cooler I'm sure because you can be creative with it.

Oh right! Wow that's a lot of space if you think about it! I'm moving into a cottage that's probably the size and shape of two containers so downsizing in advance lol PRACTISE run πŸ˜„

It has to have room for solar panels and a rain water tank or even barrel should provide enough water for my household needs @_@

It is plenty if a person doesn't have much stuff. Great about a practice run. πŸ™‚ The smallest place I lived in was about 400 square feet, with a boyfriend I had at the time. That was too cramped for two people, lol I had most of my stuff in storage elsewhere.

And of course the outdoors becomes a living space too, like that deck allows for in that photo.

I have a friend who collects so much water from rain that he has enough to do everything he needs to at his place and a surplus.

What always strikes me about some of these options for building a home for off-grid use is that they can look kind of luxurious on the outside, if a person would like that.
Agreed - the only limit is your imagination... πŸ™‚ and maybeh how much effort you want to put into the build πŸ˜†

For sure. πŸ™‚ A lot of contemporary style s are fairly minimalist, even with luxury homes, so it's a time in history style -wise when even a simple shape, like the container homes, fits right in.
