INFP or INFJ?

I been reading this subject on a forum on Quora and the op made some good points on both. So I just thought maybe we can bring this subject here and maybe talk all about it? Like maybe some of you may have different viewpoints on the matter. Other personality types can also be brought to the equation as well, like your own for instance.

And yes it's official. I'm an INFP type.

Sir there is no way you’re an INFP

INFPs are Fi dominant and you practically avoid emotions

I think you are an INTP

Why of course. I don't like showing any of my emotions. I'm good at hiding all my emotions so of course it seem I avoid that. I only avoid emotions of people I can't stand. Yeah I admit I'm cold like that.

It depends on who you ask. INFJs use extraverted feeling which means they tend to prioritize others feelings over their own. So naturally they are more considerate of the people around them

INFPs use introverted feeling, which mean they prioritize and mainly focus on their own feelings.

And since it’s their dominant function their emotions take charge of how they view and navigate the world.

To some ppl that can seem selfish since they care more about authenticity and act based on how they feel

so to a lot of ppl an INFJ may be kinder because they are more demonstrative of it and also tend to mold themselves to others.

But INFPs on the other hand have more profound emotions. They tend to be more gentle, sensitive, and non judgemental and understanding but they aren’t as selfless as INFJ’s

I personally think ENFJs are the kindest but it just depends on the person

Now you see, you just described me here. INFP

Well I suppose I answered in an INFP way. I do operate through my self & relate to others through what I know however I am usually the most understanding, non judgmental, fair, sweet person most people I have been in relationships or friends have known. I have become more about myself only because I’ve been hurt so much, my priority had always been others. But that is a problem in that others don’t return in it & you end up in a bad place. I also was raised in a religious environment where we learned to help others through our youth groups etc. operating through your feelings does not mean you are putting yourself first.

Now you see, you just described me here. INFP

INTPs have some similarities to INFPs so it may be easy to mistaken yourself as one. But what I described here only a fraction of what an INFP is.

They also use Ne which means they tend to see possibilities and are prone to daydreaming. I don’t know any INFP who isn’t a huge daydreamer.

Fi combined with Ne is what can make them often put themselves in others shoes and be creative

There are other traits as well

Also ISFP are Fi dominant as well and these types also can be confused with INFP

Based on what you replied to me the other day you don’t seem to see the world through an emotional lens which is why based on your replies and stuff I don’t really see INFP

I don't know, cersei. I mean I know what you're saying and yes I could very well be mistaken for something else other than INFP who knows. I'm just going by all those mbti tests results and lately they all been coming up as INFP. I just don't like showing emotions on this site. I like to keep secretive and quiet about a lot of things that nobody knows about. That's why I avoid emotions. I feel nobody on this site has to know nothing. I'm not saying I'm being fake or anything. I just don't like to display the real me. Not even to the public's view.

Sorry for this long delay. I just came from my eye appointment and now I forgot what else I was gone say so bump it.

I’m not saying that INFPs always put themselves first. But the nature of INFP is going by THEIR own feelings which is just naturally going to be less sacrificing than an INFJ who uses Fe seeing the world through OTHERS feelings. It doesn’t make one or the other a better or worse person, it’s just the way they process the world.

I’m an INFP myself and I wouldn’t call myself selfish. In fact I do care and am mindful of how I treat others. I don’t like hurting peoples feelings and I do understand or try to understand others. But I do recognize that I tend to view things with my own feelings and beliefs first. When it comes to things that conflict with it I find it difficult waver.

INFPs have individualistic beliefs. So if they believe it’s important to care about others they would not be selfish because they hold those beliefs close to their heart.

I wouldn’t say INFPs operate through what they know though. That’s more of an ISFP trait. INFPs try to imagine what it’s like and can be in tune with what they can’t see.

INFJs view the world through the ppl around them. That navigates their actions. So their beliefs and feelings are influenced by the people around them. INFPs have their own beliefs and feelings regardless of what others around them are like.

INFJs are like visionaries INFPs are idealists.

When comparing the two when you navigate through your feelings that is putting yourself first though. That’s just how it is. I even know that I find myself dwelling on my own feelings often but that doesn’t mean I don’t empathize or understand others, because I can and do. It’s just I know ultimately I cannot sacrifice my own feelings/beliefs at the risk of satisfying other people

I’ll use the person Im most familial with is a for sure INFP. Kurt Cobain. And as you can tell he is one of my favorite famous ppl and I think he was a very kind and sweet person. Ppl around him said the same thing

However, in the end he ended his feelings overpowered his actions, and instead of putting the feelings of his wife and daughter ahead of his own he drowned in his own emotions.

An Fe person would be more likely to pull through and suffer because they’d think about how them dying would affect their loved ones.

Neither one is wrong. And I mean I understand how Kurt probably felt and why he did what he did, he really thought ppl were better off without him. Which was based on his own feelings.

On the other hand he was still a very thoughtful and empathetic person. He was so adamantly against racists, sexists, and homophobes because he knew the harm & hurt they caused people.

When I think of a famous INFJ I can only think of Jesus right now. In comparison Jesus died for others despite his own suffering from it. By the nature of Jesus/God he prioritizes others feelings over his own and is self sacrificing.

I don’t know if you can see the differences I rambled on too much lol

But in any case I’m not saying INFPs don’t prioritize others, it’s just in comparison to an Fe user like INFJs they would seem more selfish.

They both are kind just in a slightly different way ~

But isn't there's an INFP-A and INFP-T? How do you know if I'm not one of those? Cus when I read different personality types I can relate to everything they say about INFP. if what's said about INFP isn't me ill jump off a bridge.

I understand what you’re saying. But where I differ is I did put others & their needs first for love. I sacrificed for my daughter and my husband because they had needs that outweighed mine. It was not that I sacrificed believes or ideals but I suffered to save them. I am very strong N F but actually almost balanced I/E slightly more I I’ve been tested a ton of times for various reasons. Perhaps it depends on other things. There is also a thing that seemed true in my life - when you can’t help yourself, you help others. It’s definitely what I’ve done starting at age 9

However since I left him at the age of 48, I’ve learned to live more as your description, my true self, and makes a happier me. But I also have a couple of 12th house planets so like they say the whole chart ? I would call my self an idealist until reality hits & then life gets hard … I suppose that’s why some people call me naive 😉 or perhaps my P is not as strong as I remember because that seems I’ve done both.

It’s possible that maybe you’re ESFJ ? ESFJs dominant function is Fe and they use Ne (which is also what INFPs use)
Either way I do believe INFPs are capable of being selfless especially towards marginalized, outcasted, neglected ppl or ppl they care about, and animals. They are very compassionate towards people and things they care about. Especially a matured one. Immature ones will be the ones more prone to acting on their own feelings. But when they a mature in my opinion they are more capable of balancing their well being with sacrificing as well.

Also I do think it’s good to consider ppls astrology charts along with their mbti. Like even though I’m an INFP there are certain ones that I don’t relate to with completely

Also I do believe that some ppl have certain functions well developed. So like an INFP can have well developed Fe or well developed Ni( introverted intuition). For a while I got confused because I felt like I used Fe and Ni so I thought maybe I was actually an INFJ but then I realized that descriptions of INFP fit me to the T and just it felt more fitting. But I’m also 12th houser so that may also change it up a bit.

Lol I grew up around J’s I am absolutely not a J. Just ask my mother! 😂 she is actually the first one to give me the test when I was in high school. She has a Master’s in counseling and it was while she was school getting her Masters.Later she was in charge of all the testing at a high school district. I’m heavily N, no way in that either. I’m pretty balanced on E/I but description fits me better as an I. I think the E is really I am social, but not extroverted. Probably ambivert. I did sacrifice for those I love when they were in bad places. My ex for a lot of years to save him after he almost died. My daughter who has severe depression/anxiety. I am extremely understanding & non judgemental and it seems to get me in these situations with those in need of stability, kindness and empathy. I just do it naturally. My J family seem to be much more self-serving. But they are not NF’s either.

However what my mom says is intelligent people can sometimes switch between types as they need to. So who knows if that’s what’s happening. What I have learned is I can’t put myself last, but I can still help others. I just have to be careful not to get pulled down into the abyss with them. People who want you to enable them see self care as being selfish. When actually they are the selfish ones. Maturity definitely helps 🙂

I hope you didn’t get the impression that I was telling you that you are mistyped or that one is better than the other. I just wanted to explain mbti from what I’ve read from ppl who are experts at mbti and from what I know from the mbti community who helped me type myself and learn to type other ppl like celebrities etc. I’m not a pro at it it’s just a hobby for me like astrology is!

No worries. I was just showing you what I knew from growing up with an expert, and where my viewpoint comes from.

INFP is more emotional based.

INFJ is more mental oriented.

This isn't just from looking into both.

This is personal experience as a INFP having a close relationship with a INFJ.

I used to be a INFP then I changed to a INFJ permanently and I know why. I always took the test multiple times to make sure. I used to really see the world as rainbows and shit frfr smh now I'm too sturdy for that so.. it is what it is
