How to Successfully Quit Smoking According to Personal Experience

Quitting smoking is challenging but possible by changing your mindset. Believing you can stop and focusing on the psychological aspect can make the process easier. Many find it helpful to replace habits and tell themselves they are capable of quitting. Success begins with a positive attitude and determination to overcome addiction.

... for any person who is interested in quitting smoking.

For 38 years I smoked, the last 10 quite heavily and quitting was/is the hardest thing in the world to do. I've tried so many times, it's ridiculous .. once addicted to nicotene, you're finished, it controls you, not the other way around.

A person cannot quit smoking ... it's impossible because it's too difficult of a thing to do. They say it's right up there with a herion addiction.

Until you quit ... then it's the easiest thing in the world to do.

I'm a reformed 3 pack-a-day smoker ... and it's all psychological. No phsycial withdraws, except for the hand-mouth-habit ... it's all in your mind.

You tell yourself you cannnot stop .. and so you can't.

Tell yourself that you CAN .... and you WILL.

If I can do it ... all of you can. It's really easy once you tell yourself you can do it. 🙂

At least he has the desire to quit, PP .... he probably tells himself that he can't do it, and even in those couple months, he probably told himself that he was going to fail, that he wanted to smoke and that he'll try but probably won't make it.

Once he tells himself he can do it ... then he will.

P - I have heard that quiting cigarette smokin is like quiting heroin. It is all the chemicals in the cigarettes that make it hard to quit not necessairly the tobacco itself that is addicting. Congratulations on quiting....you have just added years onto your life.

Do you find it is more the oral fixation that is the habit or do you miss the taste.

Both of those things at first, for the first several months .... but, now that it's been nearly 8 months I've begun to realize that it's the covering up of taste. Cigerettes don't taste good, so it's not that ... it's the other side.

When you're a smoker, especially for as long as I smoked .... how things taste are altered. And not just in food, everything, even your own saliva.

So, the hardest part for me was in adjusting to this. A smoker, if you ask them, will tell you they especially love to smoke after a meal, while drinking a beer or drinking coffee = they feel like they have to coat their taste buds by smoking with it, or just after it, because they have to maintain the way things are suppose to taste. Even in sex or any kind of exertion ... a person salvatates heavily, and so they must smoke immediately afterwards for same reason ... to coat taste buds.

So, that was definitely the hardest part .. in fact when I'm drinking coffee to this day, after all this time, I will still think the coffee doesn't taste right and I look for a cigerette to smoke.

Ahhh yes ....I have to admit .....in HS it was a cool thing to go to the coffee houses with your friends and drink coffee late at night and smoke cigarettes. They do go hand in hand really well ....and with beer. I was always a social smoker and not a habitual smoker. It was the best part of being married to my ex husband, he got me to quit in my early 20's. I am so grateful to him for that. Keep going P-Angel .....if it is working mind over matter than keep going.

Intresting choice of words! I am the dork who keeps telling the smokers around me that nicotine is in fact a drug. I mean who are we kidding here, nicotine is ADDICTIVE and comes in a neat package that's clearly bad for your health and is directly linked to the deaths of hundreds of thousands people each year. I realize it's not as heavy and mind blowing as cocaine, but if it's additvie and on top of all bad for your health then shouldn't that be illegal after all? I mean if it was only bad for your health but not addictive, then fine...

I am all for the freedom of choice. If I want to slowly kill myself it's up to me, right? But then shouldn't we open up the market place a little wider and legalize certain other merchandise too that fall into the same category marked ADDICTIVE?

Btw I'm not a smoker, never have been and never will be. Even if it was harmless, I couldn't understand why people would want to inhale smoke into their lungs. It's just.. smoke!

Ten dollars .. holy shit.

My husband stopped exacty a year before me ... I told him that I cannot quit if he's puffing away at them in front of me, so he quit 2 years ago. Then at the begining of this year .... I did it. Done.

I am now officially a non-smoker, except for my blunts, of course 😉

And yes, I've gained about 25 pounds 😢

At the beginning of 2010 I will be at my year mark, and believe it's adequate enough time to wean myself off of the donuts and cheesburgers 😄

I smoke and I'm not addicted. I smoke one pack every three days. I smoke because I enjoy smoking. And yes you can quit "just like that" When I found out I was pregnant I was about 3 weeks along and I quit that day for 9 months........just like that. I cant speak for heroin but I think that nicotine addiction is all in your head.

Ahhhh...

jeez, chantix...

my ex boyfriend went on chantix and to this day (over a month of having been off it) he is still feeling bi polar effects. he lost his job, he lost friends, we split up... he started having delusions... big problems arose, and even after a month of being off it.... terrible, terrible shit.

i recommend some heavy heavy research of personal stories on this drug. it is said to cause very bizzare behavior.. suicidal ideation.. suicidal behavior.. suicide...

in my opinion this drug should NOT NOT NOT be on the market.....

my mother was a 2 pack a day smoker for 20 years, she spent an entire day on the website http://whyquit.com/ and quit, cold turkey, the next day..

I was on Chantix and thought it was great. I had no side effects other than I just stopped thinking about smoking and didn't have a physical desire to do so. I had habit of lighting up as soon as I got in the car though. Alcohol is a big trigger too. Never had a desire to smoke w/ my coffee though.

How many times have I heard someone say they are not addicted— You smoke 8-10 smokes every day and you say you are not...I find that hard to believe!

I quit myself 3 times, 1st when I found out I was pregnant with my 1st child and then started again afterwards, 2nd after the 2nd child and didnt start again for another 12 years but I said only socially for 6 months, then I started buying my own and smoking maybe 1 or 2 a day. I finally went cold turkey because it upset one of my daughters and that was a month of hell!!! The withdrawals and moods all came even after only partially smoking & the mind wanted to smoke too. There's the addiction there, your mind doesn't let go. While pregnant it was easy because I had a damn good reason not to harm my baby any further and I could eat.

You say you smoke because you enjoy it...can you stop for a day, 5 or a week or two or does your mind just say I want to because I enjoy it?

@Sweethearts-to answer your question. Yes I can stop for day, 5 days or a year. People are different. Just because you have/had a dependency does not mean everyone else does. There are people who are hard core social drug users and pill poppers that only get stoned "in the moment" and yet they function very sober on a daily basis. Its about how your brain is wired. Some people are more susceptible to dependency while others can shake it off at will. Most people drink but not everyone is an alcoholic. I have friends who smoke a LOT, but only when they have a cocktail. PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT. And now I am done with this post.

A social smoker that smokes while drinking and no other time is one thing but someone that smokes every day half a packet a day and says they arent addicted...funny. Hey, but thats their choice whatever they want to do and my choice to laugh when they say they arent addicted!

My friends partner has a theory that he isnt addicted either and when he wants to give up he will just quit without any help from pills or patches etc. So now that she has given up through the use of the pills from the doctors....he's still puffing...oh because he wants to and doesnt want to give up yet!

Keep up the good work Bling, oh and you might want to take up something like chewing gum or mints and something to do with your hands. My gf is real upset because she has put on alot of weight, hand to mouth she is eating alot in replacement. But yeah, those things wean you off the cigs slowly and before you know it you wont be smoking anything or missing it either.

Hey P!

I just got this thread. Nice work on quitting smoking. I quit A LONG time ago and I ended up doing it cold turkey as well. It was just that "switch" I was just able to flip on one day. No rhyme or reason behind it so much as just sheer will and realizing it was time.

I will admit though I will have one every so often. I had one last Saturday after several beers into the evening but other than that one in a blue moon, I'm good.

In regards to gaining weight, that's okay. I put on some extra weight as well. But one thing at a time, right? First the smoking habit, and once you know you're free and clear, you can bang out your next vice.

Good job, P.

Bling the other thing I did after the 3rd time was eventually go to a hypnotist. I went for other reasons too but asked to add in something about smoking and I remember quite clearly him saying how I'd be disgusted with the thought of smoking again...Sometimes when I drink for some unknown reason around my friends I'll say give me a puff (drunk I guess) and I only ever take one and then give it straight back!!! What ever it takes you will I can guarantee you know it's all worth while in the end for numerous reasons!!!

Just be careful with the ciggies...

The chantix not working well for you can fuck with your head, and start making you feel sorry for yourself, like fuck it might as well start smoking again. Can't really explain, but just be careful. GL.
