My man and I have decided that for valentines day this year we are going to go on a picnic and we are not spending any money on each other. Just doing something as beautiful and simple as a picnic is enough.

I work in retail. Valentines day is a day that cracks me up cause of what I constantly see being bought. 50 dollar flowers and condoms.
That sounds nice, but it's awfully cold in February for a picnic.

Me and my guy are going to make dinner, like we did last year, crab legs, lobster, steak, shrimp, veggies and rice. I HATE going out on Valentines day! It is so crowded, it makes the whole night miserable. He made me that dinner last year so I told him I want it to be our V-day dinner ever year. And besides that Walking Dead starts back up and I won't be missing that. So we are going to buy each other Walking Dead jammies that we can wear every Sunday night and I want us to get a devotional to do together. Our big gift is going in on a hand gun together. And of course sex and a massage...perfect way to end the night!

That sounds really nice and cozy.

We each have a teenage boy living with us....it's hard to do relaxed, romantic, cozy stuff at home.

It's not so much "What do we want" as - "What do we NOT want."

What we do not want:
1 - To be expected to read her mind and "Find just the perfect gift she's been thinking of" when we all have a well proven track record of being really shitty psychics. If we get you a thoughtful gift, appreciate it. Don't expect us to know the exact designer purse and matching shoes you want and pick them in colors that will match your fingernail polish of choice for the day. Again... we guys tend to be really really bad psychics and mind readers.
2 - Dealing with crowds and long lines. IMHO this is the worst night of the entire year to try to go out to dinner... because that's what everybody else thinks they have to do.
3 - A bunch of pressure to buy a ring and "pop the question"
4 - No, Valentine's day is not an excuse to inflict a "Chick Flick Marathon" on us.

What would be great:
1 - A low stress dinner at her place or mine, whichever one of us wants to cook. The gal who mentioned a picnic has the right idea, that would be perfect if you have the weather for it. Where I live it's in single digits.
2 - Bake me some cookies or something, I'll probably like it better than any gift you'd buy me. If you're in a cold weather area and knit... knit me a cap or scarf or something. I'll love it even if I would normally hate that sort of thing, simply because you made it for me.
3 - Yeah some really good sex would be nice.

Fighting crowds and long lines doesn't say romance to me... nor does blowing a bunch of money on expensive gifts and crap. Any fool can blow money or go out. If she goes to some *effort* for me... cooks or bakes me something, makes me something... she puts her time and effort into something for me - That goes lot further toward making me feel loved than swiping a credit card ever will.

Something private, her place or mine, nice dinner... maybe she cooks, maybe I do, maybe we both do... maybe we don't feel like cooking and order Pizza delivery? Light a few candles, have something nice to drink, and enjoy one another's company rather than waiting 2 hours to be seated at a restaurant, fighting the weather, the crowds, etc.

For the love of God don't start dropping "pop the question" hints. That just gets miserable.

Great insight. As always
