Scorpios are just as reserved as I am, and it usually never makes it past the friend level, IF it gets to that level at all.

Chances are if I've dropped contact it's because I don't see the same amount of effort I've put in returned and I'm mirroring your actions. As for rationalizing it's because most people are sensitive when it comes to hearing the truth. Nobody wants to hear "I've been distancing myself from you because I've lost interest." If we tell the truth we come across as an insensitive jerk. And if we sugar coat it to spare your feelings we come off as having lead you on. It's a lose-lose situation.
Why do Virgos drop contact with people and rationalise this by saying it's to avoid hurting the other person? I've seen this explanation a few times on this board. Isn't it just as hurtful not to give the other person closure and an opportunity to improve themselves?

I feel stuck in a rut with my job. The pay and benefits are good and there is job security. The problem is the environment can be hostile and every other week it's "I'm at my limit." I KNOW what I need to do and how to get there, but I feel I'm too comfortable in my routine to do anything about it because I'm not feeling motivated.
