The whole thing - even with enough money- has always left a bad taste in my mounth without ever truly figuring out what exactly causes it. Even without the pontential damage to climate through flight.

Does it have anything to do with how some travelers often times disrespect the visiting country/culture? I know a few people that have issue with it, simply because they have seen Westerners do very inappropriate things at special places within the country they are visiting. From taking pictures of religious structures, to ignoring sectioned off areas for pictures. I also have heard that some get offended with Westerners attire at temples in Asia as well, because their clothes are "scandalous".
While I'm not much of a fan of this either it is something that applies to all tourist stuff and isn't something exclusive to the backpack thing. I think it's the narration that often comes with it once those people get pack and talk about this thing like it has been some kind of deeply touching spiritual awakening that taught them that you don't have to own everything you want, that there are people who are poor and that one should do something about that etc.click to expand

I mean it’s their choice? It’s not they way I would want to travel but if they want to pretend to be vagabonds for a few years that’s their decision. People don’t have to give them money.

there was a bearded white man that asked us for money
said he got locked out of the apartment by his filipina gf
about a month later i saw him again and he came up to me with the same story but with 200 bucks more
i thought about kicking him like really hard in the knee
then calling the cops
but i didn't feel like stirring up drama that day

Apparently, Westerners are traveling into impoverish Asian countries to vacation/sight see. Which is normal. However, there is a new influx of younger Westerners that are now doing this without enough money to do so, and know they don't. So they go to these Asian countries and begin begging/panhandling asking for locals to fund their continued travels to see the world and live their dream of traveling.
Now Asian countries are banning this practice, and there are accounts that the "Begpackers" are being dragged to their home countries embassies if caught asking for money.
Are they entitled? How do you feel about this practice? Should it be banned? Should it be allowed?
(Again, please note this is occurring in poor Asian countries, like Thailand, Bali, and Cambodia. And the panhandlers are from the UK, Australia, etc...")

I think this trend amongst millenials is something like "finding out their way from consumerism and materialism" and they are just too dumb to be aware
they probably think they are "enlightened" and "spiritual" to live without money and not eat meat and visit impowerished countries where they try to live "in align with the nature" and present themselves (and feel like) heros to resent the capitalistic society
they are so pretentious that eye-rolling doesnt do it justice, but...
to be fair, these are mostly millenials, they grow up on instagram and instant gratification and endless possibilities and fakeness is what they see from the time they were allowed to have social media access... which is fairly early
its something else like we are used to
I think they try to rebel against the world, like others did before, and the by-product is this begging
the world has changed so much and the insta-generation are confused how go against it, if they dont like it..... hence, going to impoverished countries without money as a rebellion and a statement towards fake consumerism (or something)
I think there are lots of them who think and feel this seriously and then there are lots of them who just hopped on a bandwagon to be cool
imho
