A basic Mafia game consists of two teams: The Mafia vs The Townies and two shifts: Night and Day
The Mafia starts the game at Night by killing a Townie. During the Day, the Townies have to figure out who the Mafia are (as they will be hiding among the Townies) and lynch them.
The Townies outnumber the Mafia 3 to 1 but the Mafia know each other, the Townies don't. At Night, some Townies have Special Roles which they can use to identify the Mafia and also other Townies.
Examples..
The Town Cop - Each Night investigates someone to find out if they're guilty (Mafia) or innocent (Townie)
The Town Slut - Each Night sleeps with someone; if she sleeps with a Mafia member The Mafia don't get a kill that Night
The Town Doc - Each Night protects someone from dying; if the Mafia targets that person, they won't die
If you're Mafia, you'll know your team mates. If you're a Townie, you won't and have to talk to people to figure out who's who and kill the Mafia before they kill all the Townies.
This game will be more elaborate than that and have more than 2 teams but that's the basics.
