Should parents pay kids to do chores?

Absolutely not! The parents do not get paid to do (household) chores either.

I agree with Undine, plus its sets a bad precedent.

That's how I made my pocket money 🙂 can you explain why you see it as bad/wrong? How did you make pocket money? Doesnt it set a type of work ethic?

I have always given my kids an allowance to do chores. That's their spending money. When they want to go to the movies with their friends or buy a video game, the don't ask me for money, they use their allowance.

Why should anyone be paid for chores?? Like you're only helping them. Parents might want to pay probably coz they think they're encouraging you.But that being the reason for us to help them sounds ridiculous.

It's a reward system. Teaches them that if they put in the hard work, there will be a benefit to it. But more importantly teaches them work ethic, saving money, how to clean properly, take care of belongings, and other important life skills. Money is the motivation. Like it is us for adults!

Never had pocket money, started working from the age of 14.

Parents living on a breadline would not want to encourage this type of behaviour as they can't afford it.

Two types of work ethic:

# Doing something with/without incentive to do so.

# Only doing something when an incentive is known upfront.

I have to agree with LePetitFisk and Teena it's a cultural think, westerner might not understand.

Have to disagree with pinkbird03 Money is the motivation is a bad example to set in my mind.

case in point living with a flatmate and cause I earn more money, I pay my flatmate to do my share of the housework.

If your giving your kids an allowance you might as well have them clean their room/wash some dishes.

If i had kids i would give them chores but i would only give them an allowance like every 2 weeks and it would not be a big allowance, just to teach them how to handle money.

Taking care of your home is not something you should get paid for.

I also pay for good grades and try to teach him to be responsible with money, so far so good

I don't pay him for doing little chores like laundry, I teach him to put his stuff up and do his dishes but there are harder things sometimes like outside work that needs to be done and I pay him for those things. Things I don't want to do ?

Imo it's a good lesson. If you do work, you get paid.

I always viewed it as a way to teach kids the importance of work, and how you will earn something for it.

I have no source of this, but I believe kids who were on a schedule of chores which they got an allowance for are more likely to get and keep jobs.

Japanese clean because

it is a big way of life for us.

Cleaning shows care and

it shows respect for space.

We are not paid to clean as

household chores when kids.

We are taught to clean as a

sign of respect and care.

No child of mine will be paid

to do something mandatory.
