Better late than never I guess.

One Berkey filter I think is good for 3000 gallons. Considering 1 gallon per person per day, for a family of 4, that should be good for just shy of 2.5 years before a filter change.

Considering oil derivatives (including natural gas from processing) are also used for the manufacture of fertilizers and many plastic resins, its not just gas one has to worry about if the price of oil goes way up.

And food? Plenty of resources out there to reference. Or, become good friends with a Mormon and find out what they do.

Otherwise, carry on.

Already there -fortunately / unfortunately

Some gold. 2-3month supply food and goods, 3 months wages in cash.

I’m looking at water storage/purifying now.

And keep in mind things like alcohol and cigarettes etc are highly valued for trading on the fly.

But yeh, for someone who perhaps hasn’t considered it all that seriously, if at all, before?

Definitely look into shoring something up on your end.

Whatever that looks like to you- freezing casseroles, buying bulk, hoarding tp haha

It’ll all help if the penny drops and your cupboards aren’t empty.

Are you people serious? 😆

I am.

In parts of Iowa and the Dakotas, in the United States, people still have oil lamps in wall sconces. Why? Because they used to have the grid go down for days or weeks at a time. Msybe not as bad now, but they still keep them Just in case.

Knew someone in the family who scoffed at the idea of prepping, but did buy a gas powered generator in the Y2K runup. Nothing major happened fortunately, but then in 2003 a squirrel got across a power line, creating a cascade failure that dropped power for a good chunk of the eastern US and part of Canada. It took 4-5 days to get things back up.

I called on a landline (there's a reason I still own one), knowing they also had a landline. I heard the TV in the background. That little generator was enough to keep the refrigerator and freezer, and lights they had running, but they had to grill because the generator wasn't enough to run the electric range.

After that, they bought one of those Generac natural gas generators with a switchover if line power went out. Fortunately that hapoened with warm weather.

Point is, you should always have some prep.

So I'm in the process of inheriting a large chunk of land in western PA. I plan on prepping and all that but focusing on setting up cameras everywhere. If Bigfoot is out there, I'm going to find him. I've spent a lot of time out in the field sleeping on the ground in lots of different places, but something about Pennsylvania is creepy af and not just because pisceanloves lives nearby. Idk just gives me the creeps. Also huge bear infestation atm but y'all are welcome.

Men are good at this. What are the tips for women living in the city lol

Glib answer? Find a man who is good at it.

Serious answer? At a minimum, follow FEMA guidelines.

You don't have to go buying the expensive freeze dried stuff unless money is no object. Canned stuff is usually good for 2-3 years. Dried stuff holds a bit longer. Buy a little extra each time you shop and store it (couple of cans of soup, bag of beans, etc.). Make sure its stuff you don't mind eating, and rotate your stock.

Important thing is water. Consumption is about a gallon per person per day, and factor in a bit more for food prep (rice, noodles, etc). Most canned food already has some water in it.

Filtration is important if you need to go elsewhere than the tap or bottled water on hand.

One other thing....Don't advertise unless you REALLY know and trust a person. Desperate people do desperate things, especially those who think if there is a supply chain issue, they can just go to the store.

Why do I read this shit before bed— 🤢

Here's how your "betters" prep:

https://www.mredepot.com/mobile/product.aspx?ProductCode=cc1110&404;http://www.mredepot.com:80/Freeze-Dried-Sirloin-Steaks-p/cc1110.htm=

Best part:

"These Freeze Dried Steaks were manufactured by a large military defense contractor. We just purchased a large lot of these steaks directly from a Defense Reutilization Office (DRO) Source. Although actual use is always classified on these kinds of bids, our information is that these are purchased for the Executive Branch use, not for our troops in the field. That usually means these go to underground bunkers for continuity of government use by strategic military leaders, congressional members and sometimes even White House staff or leadership."

Hopefully they put in a large stock of ice cream.

Somehow seeing this topic scared me. Because i know now any thing is possible specially after seeing the world in lockdown for months . I never though before, that it could actually happen .

Connected world has become scary thing now. More and more the countries have connected to others grander becomes the scale of any man created disaster.

Just about 70-80 years back the entire world experienced a large scale of human created havoc . It took such a short time to forget the lesson.

I am truly concern.

No. You can't prep. All real crises are never predicted by humans. As long as you don't live in NYC, LA, DC, or less than 500 km from Belarus you are probably safe.

There will be insane changes in US though. Just don't do what majority of population will do in panics and you will be good.

We in a front line and people got crazy 😂

Like what could happen in the west?

We ran out of toilet paper the min everyone was told to stay home.

What if gas price go over $ 8 a gallons, what would that do to are already stressed the fuck out supply chain.

I am no longer the person that will say, "oh that will never happen" anymore.

Should I buy those bucket of emergency food and a Berkey?

Yes but not for the reasons your thinking of.

We should be prepared for our shitty power grid to continue to fail. Have an alternative source of heat. Have a small generator.

Stock water and canned foods for at least 2 weeks.

Threat of natural disaster and extreme weather due to global warming is a reality we should all be focused on. Not the remote possibility of nuclear war.

Our power grid is 70-80% 25yrs or older. Faulty shitty system that is more responsible for deaths than actual natural disasters. Just look at what happened in Texas recently with the freezing temperatures and people with frozen pipes unable to have water, leave their homes, or have adequate heat. Politicians escaping to their summer homes or going on vaca to Mexico. Sorry poors!

Here in California our concern is fires and vast majority is started by faulty power lines, not natural or arson related causes. And while the state will prosecute arson the power companies get a pass when their negligence is responsible for loss of life and property. Because corporations are valued more than the individual in this country.

I will say it’s kinda justly ironic that centuries ago we banned native spiritual rituals, which includes land management. Now, in large part due to our lack of land management, fires here can so quickly grow out of control and threaten our existence.

I had to look this up on wiki - it was an old TV program here that replayed somewhat recently. The Twilight Zone - try to watch it somewhere. Haunting.

A Little Peace and Quiet

While digging in her garden, harried housewife Penny unearths a wooden box containing a gold pendant in the shape of a sundial. She discovers that saying "Shut up" while wearing the pendant causes the entire world but herself to become frozen in time, and saying "Start talking" makes everything begin moving again. She uses this power to give herself much-needed reprieves from the demands of her dim-witted and hapless husband Russell and their four children: Janet and Susan, who are always fighting; Bertie, who is clumsy; and Russell Jr., who is always playing pranks. She also silences news programs about recent arms talks between the United States and the Soviet Union and moves door-to-door anti-nuclear weapons activists away from her house while they are frozen in time.

One evening, the radio announces that nuclear missiles are heading for the United States from the Soviet Union. When the radio reveals that ICBMs have entered U.S. airspace, the terrified Penny freezes time, then leaves her house and walks through town. As she notices terrified people looking skyward, she looks up to see a Soviet nuclear missile frozen a few hundred feet in the air, nose down, and moments from impact. She is left with a no-win no-win choice: either live eternally alone or die.

I think in first World countries we also need to prep for worstcase scenarios that do not involve bodily harm. Landlords raising the rent, knowing what to do if the government bureaucracy is stalling/irrational, unemployment, homelessness. Just coming to terms with the fact that since trump the social fabric of democracy is damaged. Many public Institutions are openly corrupt, irrational, incompetent.

100%

Maybe in different degrees but yes.

If not in that capacity then in some other way.

You protect yourself and the ones you love.

Sarah Conner from T2 was a prepper.

Preparing for [Skynet]

EDIT: With that being said, I'm not saying

you or anyone should be in fear. I'm just

saying it's wise to prep and to do it from

an intelligent and safety perspective even

if you know nothing will likely happen.

I was thinking about 8 dollars a gallon. If I lived 10 miles from work. I could drive back every day on less than 10 bucks a day and still have gas left over to go to Taco Bell

They are pointing out how odd it is that Russian hasn’t cut off electricity, gas infrastructure

N how he is only using 70 airplanes vs the 1500. What’s the agenda?

idk I can only speculate off of the media and information I have access too, but it really all just looks like a shit show, where non of the players in the Russian military have any idea about what is going on, what they are doing there, didn't even know they were supposed to be there.

I would guess that Putin or the people close to Putin are giving out orders for what ever air strikes that are going on, and everyone else is like wtf is this?

I've been getting into more homemade stuff. Like with simple ingredients like flour, salt, sugar, and yeast you can make anything from bread to pizza dough. Stuff like soda bread doesnt even require yeast. Butter is really easy to make homemade also, if you have acess to heavy cream. I feel those and stuff like cheese will be the last things to go since they are the most common. Also I've been making my own stock and broth out of extra vegetables and the bones from chicken, beef, or pork. Never throw that stuff away. Then you have access to all kinds of soups and stews. Keeping all the fats from your pork, beef, and chicken is a good idea also. You can use them to replace cooking oils, or even use them as candle wax in an emergency. I could go on and on, but you get the idea. The more you do at home the more you save. You also learn how to do all these basic things most people forgot about. If the time comes at the very least you can survive a bit longer then those who only survive off the mass manufactured necessity from the grocery store.
