The Bad Guy

So I was catching up on GOT, and I got to the point where the Hound dies. This death affected me more than any other, and someone asked "Why? he's a bad guy, he did bad things"

But I often feel bad for the Bad guy, like I find more sympathy for the complex characters.

How do you often feel about the "Bad Character"?

Keep watching. People die, but some don't stay dead for long.

I agree though. Characters who are bad and complex, they have to struggle to come out the good guy and on top. I imagine it's a lot harder for someone whom being good is just natural.

I'm the same way but usually only when it's a character that has done bad things but I am able to humanize them and redeem them in my mind.

it happens to me irl situations a lot too. when I started digging into this dynamic in my life and friendship circles, i had to look at why i kept seeking them out. two reasons:

you either 1) like being the exception, the one who understands complex personalities, the insider, etc.

or

2) you love narcissistic traits because a) narcissists arent afraid of how much and how hard you want to love them. youre drawn to pleasing them or b) narcissists show up hard for themselves. if you happen to be there too, thats fine. but really its all about them. their indifference attracts you

i was feeling heavy for couple days when the hound died. he has a soul but he did some f up stuff to some who were kind to him so he deserved it

oh i did. i was traumatized for days after he crushed that Prince' head!!! i didn't expect that and i didn't close my eyes quick enough!

even though Mountain acts like a robot but he just follows orders. nothing to dislike about him

i watched every single show up to this Sunday's latest ❤️

Nah...crushing Prince Oberyn's head was one thing. Mountain probably enjoyed it too.

He's vicious and cruel, a sociopath who enjoys hurting and killing other people. It's actually quite fitting that he's Queen Cersei's personal bodyguard, since birds of a feather flock together and all that.

How do you think the Hound got that horrible scar on his face?

i had to think back hard. it was too long ago! this thread supposed to be fun and relaxing lol

anyway, yeah Mountain was the Hound's brother who messed him up. they didn't show those cruel stuff he did in the show though just mentioned them. words simply don't make that deep of impression on me. maybe it's also his acting. he acts like giant robot who is programmed to be vicious. soulless. empty. predictable thus nothing to fear or dislike. i just feel indifferent about him

When I find myself sympathizing for the "bad guy", it's because they have motives that I can understand or closely relate to.

Most villains are not flat out ‘evil’, and are often motivated by legitimate causes at the beginning (i.e. a will to survive) but somehow lost their way. We understand their motivations in doing the things they do, so we end up sympathizing with their skewered point of view of the world.

I don't believe that anyone is inherently bad/evil, just a victim of circumstances.
