This is one of my favorite. Yes it's creepy, and iconic for the scenes towards the end where the pig does strange facial expressions. In reality however, this is a pretty remarkable costume. At the time I don't think they were trying to be creepy, but just showing off their amazing costume, and all the things it could do. Though I bet some of you seen clips or gifs of this pig, specifically doing the strange functions at the end. However, for 1907 this is pretty amazing imo. Bravo France.
El Amor Brujo, I watched the whole thing in Spanish without subtitles and still liked it. 😂
Saura made some legendary movies.
I don't know how it's possible to see in english but "Peppermint Frappé" is a must watch. A creepy story of intense carnal obsession with some incredible 1960s cinematography and aesthetics
Almost a century old, "The thin man" franchise is one of the best detective franchise from the 30s, but the movies are not easily available on youtube. An ex socialite solves crimes while managing his recent marriage and social obligations
There are a couple movies in this playlist, and you can probably find more
A real treasure trove, this yt channel offers playlists with almost full TV shows going from the 20s to the 50s. Some of them so old they were aired in cinema because TV didn't exist.
Includes, the old Flash gordon episodes, old sherlock holmes, an old indiana jones prototype from the 20s with john wayne, etc
Probably the soviets' answer to James Bond, 'The Elusive Avengers' is a serie of 1960s adventure movies with young heroes of the revolution in a coming of age, first fighting white russians during the civil war, then becoming part of the Tchekist police to hunt the last saboteurs, then going to paris to foil an evil plot against the crown of the tsar.
It's a mix of spaghetti eastern, adventure, propaganda movie and a few goofy musical sequences, with some fine 1960s cinematography and some nostalgic poetry
this is my letterboxd list with a ton of old Criterion films that are largely free on YT. not all are worth watching, but it was an awesome experience watching all of them. I have them each rated
here are the rest of my lists. the Ingmar Bergman list being the most extensive, & probably what I had shared on here on the dragonhorsecvck account along with some Jean-Luc Godard. the vintage Japanese Godzillas have a ranked list also, most are trash but the top ones are a vibe.
I just shared this with Cloudy today on my blank thread, it's an old Louis Malle documentary of Glencoe, Wisconsin in the aftermath of WWII & it's hilarious. I liked & gave 3 stars (which is pretty good for me)
Effedupmovies.com has tons of kino shit for free, and they're high-quality streams with few popups compared to similar sites. Sinful dwarf has sick funk guitar-hooker sex. I might rewatch now.
Posted by MidAtBest OP my good man, will you please run me down your appraisal of each of these directors:
-Ingmar Bergman
-Quentin Tarantino
-Jean-Luc Godard
-Nicolas Winding Refn
-HARMONY KORINE
-David Lynch
-John Waters
Thanks in advance
To contribute to the thread:
bergman : never watched a movie, at least I don't remember it
Tarantino: I hate him since pulp fiction bc of vulgarity and low-level pop culture rehashing(most of his fans in europe are degenerates who enjoy comic books and forced americanisms), the movie about hollywood is the only one I enjoyed
Godard : ugh, the pope of french hipsters, he represents a really disgusting part of french society, a mix of boomerism and media mafia favoritism
refn: yep, it's another reddit favorite. I only saw Drive, but I think all the movies are the same, pointlessly violent and devoid of substance. He looks like a scandinavian bicyclist living in a throuple to save the planet
korine : never saw a movie, but I'm not attracted by the general filth aesthetics
waters: I like the spirit, I saw polyester when I was 11, but it's a bit too vulgar, I don't like vulgarity, but at least he's legit and not a fake. Respect
Lynch : lynch is part of a handful of directors with real talent, but who have unfortunately been propulsed to stardom by european hipsters and european money before they could actually mature and do their own thing. So their artistic growth was stunted and they did a bunch of mostly bad movies with a few jewels hidden in. These directors I'm thinking about are Lynch, Jarmusch, and I forgot the third, but I really like some of jarmusch stuff (stranger than paradise, ghost dog) but some of his other movies are overrated or just some shit he did to get a big paycheck from euro hipster producers (dead man, the limits of control).
Rainer werner fassbinder : made some really fantastic stuff in the 70s with nice strange aesthetics
carlos Saura made some nice aesthetic movies too in the 70s, generally based upon weird sexual fetishism and passion.
lars von trier : I only saw Europa but I found it some kind of masterpiece, but I'd understand that not everybody likes it
Last good movie I saw was Black Widow (1987), a stylish crime drama set right at the beginning of the purple era with very nice cinematography, not a mastrepiece but cool 1987 ambiance
Tysm for taking all that time! I forgot to mention Pier Paolo Pasolini. I only saw Salo and Arabian Nights of his, both extremely sexually graphic & banned in many countries. Tried to find a free YT video of Arabian Nights for you, that's the one I'd recommend, but he's known to be a maestro of sorts. He's a Pisces man who was murdered after Salo, which was a cinematization of Sade's 120 Days of Sodom. Id only watch that once, much like Lolita but more traumatizing. Pasolini was in fact a convicted pedophile who made art pretending to criticize it but just show it. I'd like to see more of his such as Canterbury Tales, Medea and the Decameron. His Oedipus Rex is free on YT
I would ask you about Stanley Kubrick, but I'd assume he's universally respected. If you disagree, lmk 😂
https://boxd.it/ayqHa Watch the Bergmans!! This is my ranked list of 45. Start with Through A Glass Darkly. He was an atheist when it was edgy (and subtle about it) & his movies are mostly pessimistic of relationships. BEAUTIFUL leading ladies. His most famous film is the Seventh Seal where the protagonist plays chess with death. All his films are 90 minutes. Some of them are VERY slow burns that wrap up in a based climax as late as the last 30 seconds xD
I feel like Godard is Harmony Korine's counterpart who is more political and takes film seriously. You're trippin if you don't like Contempt and looking at Brigitte Bardot. I wish Masculin Feminin was still free on YT, Anna Karina my type af
Korine is a troll who makes antifilm. My favorite was kids, mainly because the villain played by Leo Fitzpatrick was so recognizable. That's actually a Larry Cook film but I pretend it isn't because his movie Ken Park disgusted me sm. Gummo is good too, Chloe Sevignys hottest role. I think that's a big difference between us- I appreciate grimy, sleazy, poverty-stricken media full of turmoil- hence the LZ appreciation, lifted from post-slavery Delta blues- while you like media to be clean and less interpersonally tragic maybe. Men are generally more left-brained esp the guys I like
You should see Serial Mom by Waters, it was a fun time. I'm glad you appreciate him. I didn't like Polyester much, my favorite was Pink Flamingos. He's dirty and I'm glad you appreciate him!
David Lynch- I only like (LOVE) Eraserhead. I want to see Blue Velvet. His others sucked like Twin Peaks I hate that murder-mystery sitcom ass genre
I'll check out Fassbinder, titles look promising. I loved Saura's El Amor Brujo although I watched it in Spanish without subtitles xD I downloaded FlixOlé and paid to watch it bc it was the only streaming source I could find lmao. It was such a a vibe. Very me. I gave 5 stars
Sorry but fuck Lars von Trier. I watched all his movies, my former annoying numale hipster friend is a fan of his and Wes Anderson, which puts a damper on them but also I disliked grand Budapest hotel. Oh, I did like House that Jack Built, but I like Matt Dillon esp in the Outsiders and Wild Things.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was great. Only time I've ever seen a pit bull attack cinematized. I appreciate that bc where I live people get violently defensive over pit bulls but the Wikipedia dog bite death page tells the whole story. You should watch Tarantino's Jackie Brown, you'd love it! Beautiful Pam Grier & great soundtrack.
Thanks, I added black widow to my watchlist.
Here's a Luis Bunuel, I gave it 1.5 stars but liked the fact that a bear was there. 🩷
I forgot to mention, Korine's Spring Breakers was probably his best movie (besides Kids) and the least nihilistic. I know Selena Gomez's moonface ass presence gives it a bad rap, but James Franco was amazing. (And Selena wasn't in it very long)
Also Refn's Neon Demon was my favorite of his (& the only one I've seen). Cinematography was Kubrick inspired. Beautiful. Since the topic is the competitive field of modeling idk how much men would like it. Obviously I value female beauty in film lmao. Keanu Reeves played a pedo landlord in this movie
I consider Refn to be the less respected Darren Aronofsky but I didn't want to mention Aronofsky bc he's so known for that gross Requiem for a Dream that's referenced ad nauseum. My favorite of his was Pi.
Is it racist or am I overreacting?
I don't care that a young black woman was cast as a Disney princess who had previously been drawn as white. She (the actress) is lovely & can sing. And I personally thinks she deserves better than Ariel & this s
It was amazing the embodiment the actor who played him did. He deserves an Oscar. Although it was pretty vanilla barely touching the cheating, drug use. Still good. I loved how they touched upon how he got his musical influences.

They are basically movies that make you happy and feel good. Feel good movies usually have an element of lightness and no upsetting plot twists.
How is this nice fella surviving all this Fire shit?

So unpopular opinion, as a black woman, I find it pretty annoying how performative this Oscars feels. It is by far the most diverse showing ever, and perhaps I’m being a cynic, but it feels so fake to me. It’s like they opened the flood gates and now they
Richard Pryor was a comedic genius who challenged all the above. He had his own comedy variety show that was so ahead of its time that it was cancelled too soon. It was before my time but I saw clip of it online recently.
I'm just starting this topic f
Read about it. Watched a trailer. Not going to the movie though...
Wish it was available some other way. Is it?
Can’t wait to see those 3 again!
Why are Italian men SO fucking HOT— Even in their old age? 🤦♀️
So I do this thing where I will obsess over someone when they're not there and get really emotional. But when I meet the same person in real life, it's like I can shut off that emotional part of myself and even seem aloof. They can say stuff I fantasized
So an acquaintance brought this up today after watching the film Hereditary, and I thought I'd bring it here to see if anyone knows of any other horror films that are dedicated to grief and trauma.
Also, an interesting article that touches on how horror
I won't spend too much time composing this post, but just wanted to honor the fact that after reaching the apex of MCU with Infinity War, the franchise is probably going to go downhill fast
It's already kind of surprising how we got to such a high quality
