So. A lot of my initial outrage was based on the assumption the story took place in the Caribbean during the 1800's.

However, after more research, I have since learned it's highly probable the story takes place in the Mediterranean (both the original story by HCA & the 1989 Disney version). Which completely negates a lot of my criticisms about casting. (I still have issues with the plot though).

So. I admit I was wrong. I realize this movie holds a lot of value to a lot of people. And I apologize if my post detracted from that or came across as demeaning in any way.

Sebastian the crab threw you off didn’t it

For the most part I agreed with your op. The Little Mermaid is a pseudo Pocahontas set under the sea. Native girl gives up her former life as a mermaid, and her family and friends to be with her prince. She sacrifices too much for love, while he gains everything without conceding anything at all
