Just an opinion thread. I'd like to hear your thoughts...

Real Talent:

1. Bruno Mars

2. Taylor Swift

3. Rachel Platten

4. Charlie Puth

5. Pink

6. Adam Levine

7. Katy Perry

8. Lady Gaga

Overrated:

1. Ed Sheeran

2. Lany

3. Jessie J

4. the fat English girl - damn can't remember

The difference: I think it's a matter of versatility. The ones on the real talent list create songs that sound upbeat and different from the rest of their songs. The ones on the overrated list are not very versatile. Ed Sheeran, in particular, seems to write good lyrics but the melodies pretty much sound the same.

it's all about "taste " though.

me and my husband and alot of people we know don't like Adele, too boring and weepy and zzzz

but my mother in law and her senior friends LOVE her.

it appeases the older folks. It's like the SENIOR music.

it would play out in old folks homes, not disturbing the peace.

Taylor Swift, i dont like her music. it's boring. not enough Ooomph.

but i also think Aquarius Regina Spector's music is boring too. ZZZZZZZ so i'm not just dissing other sign music k?

borinnnnggg.

i dont listen to Ed Sheeran. To be honest he's boring too.

Bruno Mars? i dont even listen to that kind of music at all. I've only heard him when i was working out at the gym with my mother in law and they play those music videos on the speaker and tv screens.

boring...

What do you think of people who compete in tv shows like ‘Idol’, ‘Got Talent’ and ‘The Voice’?
I used to love watching highlights. Paul Potts' performance being the "flagship" of why i watched.

A person with dreams, but not much achievement in life, poor sob would be another description, comes on stage and leaves his 110% on it. I loved it.

nooooo i think he meant another taurus.

can't get her name on my head.

dark haired woman who has trouble losing weight (I remember reading an article on her weight loss woes that's why) but she's a great singer, song writer....she's british too.

If you really put Gaga over Adele (assuming that's the fat British girl)...

The only one legit likeable from that list is Pink. Taylor Swift's " blank space" is a nice song tho, other than that.....
I’ve met Pink. She’s an utter bitch and horrible drunk

I’ve partied down with some pretty famous folks.

Well iirc she is a virgo. When they get drunk the criticism has no filter and all the pent up frustrations with people who they tolerate sober gets released.

why for? do you get back stage passes or work with celebrities?

Literally all of them who you named are overrated. Unless they have a voices like E.Presley, C.Dion, W.Huston, Marc Anthony...and similar category people they're nothing but overrated in my opinion. Those are true talents, people with incredible voices. I don't see such voice in any of those you named...Lady Gaga, Katy Perry talented...are you serious? lol
I was talking about song-writing abilities.

@sierra_, I think I agree with you on Virgos being good song-writers. I was able to write 3 songs in a matter of 6 days. They're just gone now because it's about unrequited love and I don't want to suffer listening to those songs. I can write a song in a matter of 30 minutes.

That's basically why I posted this thread. I think there are really good song-writers but there are some who are way overrated. At the top of my head are Ed Sheeran and Adele, whose songs kinda sound similar and are practically about the same thing.

I think that this decade has been pretty good when it comes to music. A lot of artists are appearing out of nowhere making really, really good music. 🙂

Ed Sheeran seems talented, and also himself. He worked his delivery from his love of hip hop and then turned himself into a pop artist. Frankly that's kind of ingenious.
I think he is talented. He's a prolific songwriter... but methinks he's way, way overrated... My issue with him is his lack of versatility... the only song he's ever written that I truly like is "Photograph" but the rest of his songs are just average.

Lacking versatility like this http://www.nme.com/blogs/songs-ed-sheeran-wrote-for-other-musicians-1960647 ?

Sia, for me, is underrated in terms of song writing.

I knew a few songs from that list. Two, in fact. Everything Has Changed is good. Love Yourself is overrated. I have yet to hear the other songs.

But maybe my judgment about his songs is basically forced by his lower registers and almost static voice? You can't do so much with not-so-wide vocal range but there are artists who can display variety despite that.

i think ed sheeran's forced into love songs coz that's what sells for him

adele's a taurus like sam smith so both of them write about saying goodbye to cheating hoes..

ALL THE TIME i mean yeah their voices are great but it's just basically taylor swift all over again

but with better voices and more self-indulgent venusian lighting

turning heartbreak into vanity

I like Sam Smith though. Basically, if all your songs are based on the same theme, you might as well do over-the-top arrangements as Sam Smith often does. The vocals are just crazy and hard to replicate.

They all suck.

Name one mainstream self made musician that wasn't influenced by a corporation.

Oh shit, you can't.
That's because it's hard to disassociate "mainstream" from "corporation".

Corporations control the mainstream. Even if self-made musicians made their way to the mainstream without corporate influence, corporations will influence them to stay there.

Though that doesn't automatically mean they're all talentless.

he's actually quite talented.

Which reminds me of the backlash he received for winning the 2017 Grammy's for Best Pop Solo. People argued he didn't deserve it. But to compose a song, perform it solo from start to finish is pretty impressive

Yup, I'm actually talking about song-writing skills. I have yet to hear the other songs included in the list you posted here. I'm busy at the office. Maybe when I have the free time, I'll listen to them.

But if I base my judgments on the things I know, I still feel that he is kind of overrated... but that might be due to his vocal range and the practically identical theme of all his songs (except for Castle on the Hill of course).

It's alright, perhaps after you get around to listening to them you'll let me know which one you liked and I can listen to it. 😛

Your OP didn't include song-writing, so when I came across that distinction I searched up songs he's written and that site came up.

That's fair. It's also good to keep in mind that most of the songs he writes are for "pop hits" which caters / targets specific audience. Which is why pop hits and Top 40s can get very predictable in terms of themes.

Castle on the Hill, I See Fire, and songs with different stories generally appeal to me.

Which I now add Mumford and Sons to the list (at least for their Sign No More album).

What a fucking horrible song.

I never liked the original version, but man, the Initial Talk remix + the video is great
