I think what it came down to was that he's determined not to develop emotional relationships (this actually seems to be a conscious effort on his part). He loves the chase, he loves the thrill of a new connection (see DC's earlier post on the excitement of that), but he's not interested in forming serious romantic connections. I think part of it has to do with the nature of his job (new country every week) and part of it has to do with him having exited a long term relationship about two years ago and the nature of the ensuing sex binge he's been on since.
