So, there was the topic the other day about talking to exes. This got me thinking, why would someone not shut that down if they're in a serious relationship?

Is it for the ego boost or just not wanting to hurt them?

Some people are just playful like that regardless of being in a relationship. To some it may be just playful/witty banter, nothing more to it.

I'm sure there are plenty that get an ego stroke off of it. Let's face it, it's nice to feel desirable and some people just like getting the attention from the opposite sex. Makes them feel like they've still got "it". Speaks More to their insecurities, than anything.

The way I figure, so long as it's "harmless" and their partner is unbothered by it, then who am I to judge.

Good view on it

Unless I like you, I don't really care to truly flirt and entertain you to the point where I'm leading you on. I could start the chase but I don't get anything out of it if I don't finish it, for an ego boost? That's all insecurities.

It's different to be friendly and joke around though.

Think that's how most people are

I don't mind people being on friendly terms (friendly flirting is part of human interaction.) Just because someone is an ex, doesn't make them the devil. (S)he is still a human being and it IS possible to have an amicable break up.

Most people answered referencing being friends with the ex, and just being friendly with them ...... whereas I interpreted this thread to be about encouraging inappropriate attention from the ex, and giving this inappropriate attention.

A person should put themselves in check, for the sake of having respect for their new partner.

Seems alright if there is no new (serious?) partner. I've been doing it for the past 5 months and ex is obviously enjoying the attention. I'm enjoying myself too!

Not encouraging the behavior.

I was asking why they don't put a stop to it. All the people that replied to that other thread never mentioned that they told their ex to stop. Why? That's my question
