No, I am in DC, I am a washingtonian. So you won't be in DC you will be in VA, which is about 15 to 20 minutes outside DC, off of 395.

I'm not sure what attitude Scorpionlady is talking about, I don't really know you, or have done much talking to you . . so, I'm clueless about that.

But, what I can tell you, is if you have any issues with . . . ummmm, how do I put this? Ok, DC is loaded with severe racial problems, so this is something that is quite sensitive to the people in the metro area. Personally, no issue at all because of my views on individuality, but, that's not the case with a lot of the residences.

As for schools, N.VA. is known for it's high standards in education. Because it's the metro of the Capital, and there are such a variety of people . . the academic structures in all of the universities are very prestigeous in their own rights. For instance, like Scorpionlady said, George Mason is excellent, many try to get accepted.

Once you get there, I know all the places to go, whatever kind of entertainment you might be looking for. FYI: many have entered DC, few have exited, be careful, and stay clear of Anacostia unless you're looking for crack.

Decided to just come out with it and be blunt . . . in the smaller surrounding counties of DC . . . kkk still exists . . it's hidden, but, very much alive. If you go visiting, sightseeing, mainly in the tiny counties of Virginia, don't be surprised to see rebel flags awaving, just keep your nose to your own business.

On the flip side, if you're a person of decentcy for every individual, no matter what, then DC is an awesom place to be because there are people from all walks of life, and a lot can be gained from each experience. Some of the most endearing people I've ever met are in the area and my life wouldn't be as valuable to me without them.

It's up to you and how you choose to deal with the issues.

I hate to talk about her because she is not here to defend herself so I won't comment on that.

What I will say to her is choose your friends carefully and don't walk the streets or come to DC at night by yourself unless your with a group and don't go to areas in DC that you or someone you are with is not familiar with, as with any place you go.

But I will comments on these things:

You know the one thing I HATE when people reference DC is that they say all of DC is full of racial problems and hate, and THAT IS NOT TRUE.

You might want to repharase that comment to, Some parts of DC is not like that NOT ALL OF DC, so unless you been here all your life and have experience all of DC, don't ASSUME p-angel.

Some parts of DC are very rough, but we also have some of the best clubs in the Nations Capital, take advantage of the sights, and memorials when you get here, enjoy your stay and try not to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

See this comment here is so ass backwards....you can bye crack any place frist of all, not just in Anacostia, p-angel you have just took one area of DC and made it sounds like that worst place in DC and that is not true, sure Anacostia is not a good place but hell neither are certain parts of MD or VA, why not talk about the spanish gang in VA you never said anything about that and that gang is in Arlington, so again before you go degrading DC make sure the place you stay also is free of crime hate and racism.

Sounds to me like it's your attitude that needs to be changed. I say to her, accept the peoples for who they are and that many wonderful people can be gained in her life that are endearing.

To warn a person about what obsticles might be found, is constructional. Furthermore, you have only spent a small percentage of your time in the area and have only your only little moment in time to make such an assessment. I, on the otherhand, have spent a lifetime of nearly 5 decades there.

Any person who knows the area, knows full well, that Arlington is just across the Key Bridge, the bridge being about 1 mile long across the Potomac River. You don't even know where Arlington is . . yet, feel like you know the place inside and out. Hell, the DC airport is in Arlington, it's so damn close, you could throw a rock, yet, you tell her it's 20 minutes away.

You know nothing about the DC area, in comparison.

She can listen to who she wants, I can tell her what I know about the area and it's none of your damn business, because I wasnt' talking to you.

Here's a valuable suggestion, Chi . . if you come to DC with an attitude like Scorpionlady, where every little gesture is taken to mean that the other person is degrading or assaulting because it doesn't fit into your perspective, then you will definitely have problems. There are severe racial problems in DC, and so long as you keep your nose to your own business and ignore the white surpremacists as best you can, stay out of Anacostia . . you'll be fine.

If you want to venture in town, Georgetown has all the nice restaurants and shops, all up and down M Street. You CAN even go all by your little self at night . . just stay out of Anacostia, don't go to S.E. South East, DC is not a good area. Stay in NW, whre Georgetown and The Hill is located, until you figure your way around.

FYI: What I meant by many have entered, few have exited . . is the road system. Every which way you want to turn is either a dead end, or a one way street. So, don't drive yourself . . some people never find their way out, lol Take the underground subway system, unless you want to be lost. One friend of mine, got lost for 2 days before she found her way out . . trying to figure the streets out, by driving, is very complex and might be your biggest challange.

What ever p-angel I am talking from my experience just like you are talking from yours...we have two different opinins but I am not going to go around degrading a city that I lived in all of my life and I will protect any and all things that are important to me and me being a washingtonian I am DAMN PROUD OF.

I am not far behind you with the percentage of life spent in DC, either.

Just because I made that comment does not mean that I don't like my city, I know what to do and how to handle myself here, in the roughest part of the city but that does not stop me from going wherever I like see you have limited yourself from certain parts of DC is it because you are scared. I am not scard to go anywhwere in DC because I know this city.

The last two posts, were in defiance to me, instead of helping this woman so she will manage in a city that can be scary.

You know we are voting for a new Mayor in DC....I really would like to see who wins....I am not going to say who I voted for but I hope that the one that wins will help continue to make the Nations Capital, a better place, for all that lives here and visit her.

Well let me say this my experience in DC is on a SURVIVAL LEVEL, p-angels is from a SCARED LEVEL, she will never go to the heart of DC, but I will go all over DC, VA and MD and further, because I know how to survive.

I just hope that while they are seeing sights like Georgtown Harbor, and shopping in Georgetown, and visiting placeing in VA, that they know there is a whole other side to DC. because Crime can happen anywhere and if you are prepared in certain situatons that life brings you, there is a possiblility of survival.

I will take everything you said into consideration. I went to school in hampton raods virginia. I know virginia . I use to visit dc all the time, hell I was just there in June. They say that is one of scorpios favorite cities. As far as racial , well damn, I will be mindful , but I am not afraid, GOD protects his children. Plus my cousin goes to Howard and I have yet to hear such a thing. You wanted to know about rooms to rent, malls and cafes.

Rooms: I know several people who live in the Crystal City towers, but, they might be too expensive for a college student. If I knew which school, I could help you find a fairly cheap place. I would think that the school would have postings for you to view of people looking for roomies. If push comes to shove, I know lots of people living in the area and could probably be of help.

Malls & Cafes: The best bet is a mall called: "The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City", which most people just call "Pentagon City Mall". In here, there is every kind of store imaginable and several cafes. It's an upscale fashion mall with all the latest style s and most people shop here. It's 4 stories underground, under the Pentagon Tower, and is accessible by "The Metro" (the underground subway system). What's cool about this mall, is that it's at Strayer University. Is that the school you're going to? If it is, then everything you'll need is right at your fingertips because this classy mall is locted a hop away from Strayer. On the subway, "Metro", you can take either the Blue Line, or, the Yellow Line - they both go to the mall and Strayer. Heck, there's even a movie theatre within the mall, it's so big.

If you want a mall that's not so upscale (expensive), you can jump on the Orange Line and go to Ballston Common Mall, which also has a wide variety of shops, and is only 2 blocks from the Metro stop. If you have a car, it's on the corner of Glebe Road and Wilson Blvd.

The first thing I would do, if I were you, is to download a map of the Metro, so you can see where all the lines and stops are, for even people who own cars, usually take the underground to get around. Parking is a nightmare in "Town". Oh, btw, people just usually refer to DC as "Town", so if you're looking for something and they tell you it's in town, they mean, D.C.

If Strayer University is where you are going to school, you're already set. It's only 2 miles from "Town", and everything is right there at the school: mall, gas stations, restaurants, post office, everything, and all accessible by Metro lines.

Once you get familiar and comfortable with "Town" and are ready to go on ventures, you have to go down to the Warf. OMG, there's no better food on earth, than what you can eat down there. There's the Kennedy Centre, the Smithsonian Institute (which is numerous buildings surrounding the mall) . . oh, yeah .

I ran out of room, lol

People call "The Mall", the grounds from the Washington Monument, to the Capital. So, if you ask someone where the mall is, they direct you to a park. You HAVE to be specific and say the actual name of the mall, or you'll end standing in the middle of a park, looking at the Smithsonian buildings all around, lol

Anyway, let me know which college and I'll hunt around for accommodations.
