Well I think it's more about the personalities involved and their upbringing rather than their sun signs.
I've seen Scorp/Cancer pairings work, I've also seen them fail.
It's best to just look at it without emphasizing too much on astrology.

This was about 20 years ago that I dated a cancer so it’s been a while, I remember there was one that I had it really bad for for several years. But it was imbalanced, he knew how I felt about him and used it to his advantage and hurt me more than once. I was also very young though, we both were.
Any cancer I dated after that, again, it was unbalanced except with them, it was the opposite they were pursuing me and I gave it a shot.. went on a few dates but nothing clicked.

Maybe you just went off Cancers, especially after your past experiences with them. Just like I went off Scorpios because I didn't want to restrict myself based on sun sign alone.

I love Cancers. They are squishy on the insides. They get all protective once they love you to bits and you make it "in".
And they do all kinds of nice stuff too, if they love you. I mean when shit gets real in life, they will be there without a question. But they just don't love just anyone, nor do they allow just anyone in.
It's usually the weirdo people that have been in their lives for a blink of an eye, and think they are #1 that end up failing.
But most people ship Scorpio with Pisces more.

For some reason, Cancer's come off to me as a) too damn dreamy sometimes (aka their head is up in the clouds) or b) way too headstrong, emotional, and bossy af. One Cancer I dated, I swear he was permanently high. He was really into getting to know me (and had some unreal artistic talent) but I wasn't feeling it. Haven't been with one since.

I've had good friendships with Cancer-influenced people. For example, one of my closest friends has a Cancer moon.
Romantically, so far, only one Cancer sun man and one Cancer moon man have attracted me strongly. I didn't have a romantic relationship with the Cancer sun man - he wasn't single, so I didn't cross lines. The Cancer moon man relationship was short term (~ 3 months max).
When I was a teenager, first learning about astrology. Scorpio-Cancer as an "ideal" match was something I read about a LOT in astrology books. I loved how the dynamic was described. Even the potential negatives didn't seem that bad! I'm 49 now, and what seemed excellent on paper (so to speak) hasn't played out for me, aside from in friendships.
Sun sign-only astrology is very limited, as many of us here know now. I'm a Scorpio sun with Gemini moon and I can see how enormous my moon is when looking at compatibility, and my Sag Mercury as well (which isn't factored into synastry as much as it should be).
