Does high mileage really have any benefits over a regular oil change?

Ive been getting them for awhile.

I drive a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 120K miles. No issues.
You can use a higher mileage oil rather than regular oil change.

But if you've notice that there's not much difference in your oil levels (from your previous service), then just continue on as normal in your servicing schedule.

I wouldn't even know how to check oil levels

You remind me of my mum 😄..my dad made sure that was the first thing I need to know and checking the tyre pressure after having my first car.
Tire pressure...i got that down pat lol.

I just always got the high mileage and i switched last.month. the drive thru oil.change.guy almost lost his shyt.

So i was wondering if there were any real.benefits

I've been advised that are certain stuff inside the high mileage oil that help protects the seals and rings etc.. inside your machine.

But if you are using an oil for a low mileage car, you may notice that you're burning more oil (meaning you have to add oil before reaching your next service) and (.. If your oil light comes up on your dash, you're running low on oil and could cause damage to the seals, rings, pistons etc.. could prove costly.. eg.. recondition engine may be required if you get to that point.

I'm just using this model as an image.. see the yellow round ring thing on the left hand side of the pic (near the water bottle reservoir. that's the oil dipstick.. you pull it out to check oil level 🙂

Best time to do it is when the engine is cold (over 6 hours off) and the ground is level. Don't forget to tell her that...

I don't even do that LoL.. I just start the engine up first thing in the morning and check it all then 🙂

High mileage oil has more stabilization additives in it to keep the seals and gaskets well conditioned so it'll prevent leaks. The older the engine, the more care it needs. I'd use it and I'm at 160k.
this is the same as telling her there are miniature unicorns running on treadmills connected to the wheels and gasoline is used to keep the unicorns warm

so you got the regular oil change by accident? it shouldn't be a problem for the unicorns or the engine.

The best thing you can do is keep changing it at regular intervals. When it gets to 150k consider changing it a bit more often. Just don't forget to do it, it's the best thing to keep your engine running for another 100k.
No doubt. I want my Cherokee to last another 100k

Usually i wait for the light to come on. Should i do it sooner?
Learn to check the oil yourself, the longer it stays running inside without changes, the more gummed up it gets, lower gas mileage you'll see. Not to mention other crap you DON'T see.

Since we are on the subject, have you had anyone mess or check the transmission fluid (quality/levels)?

I did when I noticed leaking transmission oil, after I got the gear box replaced, that was something I did as well as the oil check.

Im going to switch back.to high mileage.
If you're on top of changes, the type isn't as important.
Would the climate play a role?

It's probably more to do with how you drive.. if you tend to go faster ie. highway etc.. my car would burn oil like crazy.. every two weeks I would be topping it up..but it's 16 years old and done nearly 350000 kilometers.

The only way to know the health of your engine is have the used oil tested that will tell you if you have excessive metal in your oil. The test will also tell you if your oil is failing and you should be changing it earlier.

Those quick lube places are horrible go to a family operated garage the quality of work is better or better yet learn how to do it yourself.

Oil changes are done hot hotter the better it helps to flush out all the s-it.

just to follow up on what he is saying. what you do is request an oil test kit for free, send in a sample of your oil in question along with a cheque to pay for laboratory testing. then in 6 weeks you'll get a report (sample pictured below) then you can get back to us and we'll go over the report with you
