So, in twelve days is my cancer co-worker's birthday. He can be cantankerous, he is sarcastic, he's honest, and he's a good person. He's the kind of guy that has something to complain about every single time you see him. He's a misanthrope, but he has a cat he loves. He's the kind of guy that never gets anything free out of a vending machine, whose car is hit by an old lady, who happens to buy a pair of socks that has holes in it. He's like a real-life Charlie Brown.

Last year, another co-worker of mine was set to leave the state, and I wanted to have a surprise birthday party for her as a way of saying goodbye. She has depression, is dyslexic, and suffers from borderline personality disorder. I don't celebrate birthdays, but I wanted to do something special for her (I don't like gifting as a societal obligation.)

Anyway, as I was passing her birthday card around for everyone to sign, cancer asked me why he should bother. I was taken aback, but not really. "C'mon! Stop being a grouchy, party-pooper!" "Well," he said." Why should I? No one gets me cards for my birthday." "Well, when is your birthday?" "July 13." I made a mental note of it. This happened last year after his birthday had passed.

So, this year, I think this grump of a cancer needs some cheering up. He's gone (and is going through) some rough times, and I think the sourpuss deserves it. He's worked at this library for 8 years, and never has anyone celebrated his birthday. That will make this all the more sweet because he won't see it coming. I BET he thinks I forgot!

I plan to get him a card for everyone to sign, and a cake. I also got him a 'Games of Throne' t-shirt because he read the books and loves the show I also got him a mug that I believe is just perfect for him and his personality.

I can't wait for all of us to surprise him! 😄

EDIT: So, we surprised him today, and I couldn't be happier for him. A co-worker paged him to come into the back office and he did, suspiciously. I had my Instax Mini 8 ready to snap a photo of him. I chose to use it because I know he hates photos, and this way he would be the only one to have a copy.

He didn't see it coming. He was very surprised that he got a card (completely not realizing he also got a gift.) he opened the 3D card I got him and it was covered in messages and well-wishes from co-workers. He actually stood there and read each one. "I have never had that many people sign a card for me in my life." I could see his eyes were emotional. He read my message (the longest on the card because I tend to write a lot - anyone else do that?) He gave me the biggest eye smile and the biggest smirk (because he smirks, not smiles), and he genuinely thanked me.

I had to give him the bag with his presents because he didn't even realize it! "I got presents, too?" "No. It's an empty bag," said my cancer brother. He looked at the mug and got it immediately! "I feel that this 'have a great day' message is meant sarcastically." It was the perfect gift for him. "There's more to it than meets the eye." He flipped it over and he let out a bark. He plans to use it at our library because he feels he will be able to get away with it.

He was surprised I got him the right shirt size, and he was pleased with it. We took more Polaroid pictures, and I wrote captions for the photos and placed them in the envelope with his card to take with him.

We nommed on brownies and talked. That moment was all about him, and I could tell he was humbled. "You didn't know these many people like you, did you?" He gave me a smartass response that I didn't catch, but we both laughed anyway.

He then left for his other shift at the other library he works at. I bet they didn't show him as much love as his best library family did. *^_____^*

He'll never forget this, ever.

And while he might not blatantly show it, you all have a place in his heart for this.

You'll see the mug. But the cards he will keep, and the shirt will be used often until its threadbare, or used every so often but kept in a special spot in storage.

Nice job 🙂
