Ain't really nothing you can do about Charley horses but just sit tight till it go away on its own. That's what I do. I take it you overweight. We overweight folks suffer from this more often.
I'm trying to decipher is this a pulled muscle or a charley horse how long does it take for a charlie horse to go away and how soon can you walk after you get one because it's been 3 hours and I still can't walk.

Also make sure you're hydrating frequently with plain ol' water.

the water is in the living room 20 steps away but the pain is so excruciating I can't get it so perhaps this is something else.

It could be a potassium deficiency. If you don't tend to drink a lot of water, you should definitely start. Charley horses can last for minutes and up to a day.
