Thanks everyone ..... you're right msMM, it's more than just my lungs. I really notice on my face. I hadn't realized that I had smoker lines until they began to vanish.

AND MOSTLY ... I hadn't realized how bad I stunk. I'm telling you, when a smoker walks past me now, I nearly gag at the stench. Smokers have no clue how bad they stink.

tcd .... your mother will only stop smoking if she wants to. If she has no desire to stop smoking then she won't.

I need to point out the key word here for success .... stop

I used to have that excuse too ... gonna die someday of something, so wtf !! Problem with that is ... it's not "that" she's going to die ... it's how much is she going to suffer before dying. Take her to a visit a person with emphysema, with lung cancer .. she might not quit, but, she'll stfu with the indifference.

Success is in the mindset.

Just as an alcoholic never "quits" drinking .... a smoker never "quits" smoking ... and in the applicable realization of that is how to conquer.

I didn't quit smoking ... I stopped smoking.

I'm wrapping up the annual tobacco report for my state - about 17.5% of the adult population smoke and sadly is highest among young adults. Of course, we know that all 20 year olds (think they)know best. Overall, 41% of smokers are trying or plan on quitting smoking within the next month - but, I won't hold my breath.

On an average night, 2 out of my 10 patients are trached or vented. I took care of a 52 year old woman some months ago who was put on hospice because she had lung cancer and had to be vented because she could not breathe on her own.

Wow, only 52 years old?
What's the youngest you've seen or heard of trached/vented?

Well done P 🙂. I myself gave up smoking 10 years ago on 31st October but started again 2 years ago on 25th December 😢. Have just stopped again on 1st February and can't wait for this first few days to pass so I can begin to really feel the liberating affects. It's difficult only in that my Taurus man is finding it hard himself but I'm hanging on to my resolve, by my fingernails. Looking forward to having my singing voice return, it's been destroyed by smoking over the last couple of years. Smoking affects every part of you.

Wow, thats awesome P!

Do you mind sharing how did you succeed?
I am trying to get my mom to quit but she says ''ah, you die anyways no matter what you do and I wanna do what I enjoy''...she is very cynical and set in her ways. But yea, I wish she'd quit, I want her around for many more years.

Tauruscancer she can only decide to stop herself unfortunately, personally I think others can make making the decision to stop stretch out longer by trying to "help" the smoker come to their senses.

Thank you everyone for your support ... and congratulations on those who also decided to stop smoking. And I sincerly hope those who are smoking, and/or trying not to smoke will find themselves smokefree ..... for, I know from first-hand experience that stopping smoking is the best thing I've ever done for my (personal) self.

A whole new world opens up for you. That may sound dramatic, and it is .. it's also the truth. Once you do it, then the reality of your power becomes obvious to you = you can do anything you set your mind to do.

If you can't stop using your crutch or addiction .... you can win/conquer anything.

FIVE YEARS today !!!

I can safely say that after five wonderful years .... my lungs will never puff on a cig again.

Well, second-hand, maybe .. and speaking of second-hand .... people who smoke have no clue how much they fucking Stink!

fuck ... the smell of alcohol coming out of a person's pours is so nasty.

Stopping smoking is very easy to do .... if you have a mind to.

All of the gimmicks out there to quit are useless, because they don't work ... if a person's mind is a smoker.

If you think you can .... you can

6 years today !!!!

6 years ago, when I stopped smoking, I was puffing over 3 packs a day. I would have to get up in the middle of the night to smoke because my addiction was so strong and heavy that I couldn't make it the 7 hours of sleeping without feeding the addiction.

for 37 years .... my lungs must have been in horrendous condition

Then one day I was sitting right here in this very place at my computer with an open pack in front of me, full packs left in the carton, and said, "I'm done"

and never smoked again.

No gimmicks, no gums or patches, no hypnotizing ..... I only used the power of my mind.

and said, "I'm done"

hey, Angel, what a happy day! this day is yours forever. congratulations.

I told my father the other day this is an often observed behavior of smokers. They smoke for years and all of a sudden the end comes to them. Easily.

Anything to do with transits?

Profile picture of P-Angel

I don't know if transits aided in my decision, or not.

CreepyPants, it is believed that quitting cigs is like quitting heroin. Though now that I have successfully become a non-smoker, and disagree with it being hard.

because it's not hard.

Like all things, you are what you think. I preach this 24/7 and also live by it.

People tell themselves that they want (it), so therefore they do. And this goes for anything, all things. It's the likely the ONLY problem all these females have in here. They have told themselves that they want this man, love this, have to have this man, therefore no matter how much of a douchebag he is .... she will not believe anything other than what she programmed herself to believe.

For years, I thought I would never be able to quit. Guess what?

That ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ is telling myself that I will never be able to do it.

Mind over matter. But, here's the trick. don't quit, ever. If you want something, and you tell yourself that you want it, but, you are going to force yourself into not having it ... then guess what happens?

That's right, you just set yourself up for failure, because you are now depriving yourself of something you've already told yourself you want.

So, don't quit. Instead, become a non-smoker. I don't smoker because I'm not a smoker.

It's really that simple.

i shared this thread with him. though i think it confirmed for him that he might not be ready. which is good! i'll support whatever move he makes, but i think that realization is a step in a more successful direction. odd as that may sound. i had a feeling about it when he first started to "quit" though. his reasons for stopping aren't for himself. i can't imagine it's going to be easy to stop doing something that you habitually do for yourself for any other reason than yourself.

well i hope what he read plants a seed cuz imo this is an empowering thread.

Congratulations to everyone who was able to kick this habit. They say it's right up there with a heroin addiction.

Today is my 7th year anniversary. And I guess this is as good as my lungs will get. don't they say it takes 7 years to heal the lungs to the best as they get? ... or something like that.

I didn't read the beginning of this thread, so in case I didn't mention it before ........ I smoked 3 packs a day for 38 years - woke up one day with an open pack on my desk, several packs left in the carton, and just threw them away.

it really is that easy, as with everything in life. If you tell yourself you can - you can.

to all of those smokers out there who know they need to stop ...... you can do it - just stop

How did you really stop? Every year I say okay I have to quit.

I started smoking in 1971, and stopped in 2009.

Bull, you will never quit. A person never quits anything.

If you tell yourself that you are going to quit something that you want to do .... then you set yourself up for failure because then you are depriving yourself of something you want. If you are depriving yourself of something you really want, then the wanting of it will be heavy on your mind.

The secret to stop smoking, or to stop anything you are doing .... is to tell yourself that you are NOT a smoker.

I never quit smoking .... I stopped smoking because I'm a non-smoker. Why would a non-smoker smoke a cig? they don't smoke them.

If you really like chocolate and you tell yourself that you are going to quit eating chocolate ... then you will crave chocolate 24/7 because you are depriving yourself of something that you're telling yourself you want.

Same with all of these threads in here where women are moaning about not having the man they want. If they told themselves differently, then they would live differently.

It's that easy. You are what you think.

tell yourself - I'm a non smoker, I don't smoke cigarettes.

mind over matter has always been the answer to everyone's problem .... all the time.

You are what you tell yourself you are.

@OP- It is mind over matter psychologically... Thank you..

Since you did quit, do you have any smoking related issues from that habit? That you know of? I do have the smoker cough and wheezing in my chest sometimes.

How did you pick up that habit to begin with?
