Anyone else just exhausted by this? Latest trends and inventions always have people chained to materialism. New clothes, shoes, makeup, skincare, accessories, cars, living space, technology, gadgets etc. How do you avoid getting caught up in it all? It's starting to make me feel physically ill. I really like being able to choose from a variety of things but I also just want to throw everything away because they also overwhelm me.

I live way below my means

I’m okay wearing repeat outfits in a week.

I’ve trained myself to not look to others for validation

I focus on nature. Gardening.

I also got rid of Facebook and Instagram. Changed my entire world

It hit me a few years ago how I didn’t even like the people I was trying to impress. I didn’t like bein so influenced by others

A pretty face doesn’t do it for me anymore. Mama needs substance

I don't understand people who have multiple pairs of shoes in their closet. It's not like they can wear it on both their hands and feet.

Really? Smart black dress shoes for events and interviews, casual shoes for if you are going out or dates, sneakers for days off, winter boots which have ankle support and grip for snow, safety boots with a steel toe cap for work. If I didn't go out or work I would only need two pairs.

Well I mean I get one would need shoes for formal and business formal events, as well as winter. I meant more of those who have 10 pair of shoes for formal attire but only gets 2 or 3 chances a year to wear it.

Some people have 100+ pairs.

I can’t imagine why? lol

I like beautiful things, and searching for them online relaxes and makes me happy. I do have about 30+ pairs of shoes in my closet, that I have yet to wear. The only thing that will stop me from buying new things, is becoming unable to afford them. Each time I become anxious that this may happen in the future, I buy more things.

A tip from someone who was raised in a communist utopia, where you had the money, but there was little to buy with them, and everyone hated such situation: If you think that you are spending too much on things, also buy shares in the public traded company that sells them, if possible. If the shares go up in value, it's almost like you are getting these things for free. For example, just bought a new Mac Air laptop by selling a few Apple shares that have quadrupled in value since the last time I bought a Mac.

as far as clothes and shoes, I have always been the type that will wear jeans from target. Zero fucks given 😂 I prefer to invest most of my money into making my home nice and cozy since it’s my sanctuary. (Cancer moon) i do want an updated, modern home though. Less maintenance. But I don’t need a brand new car or brand new phone or a butt load of beauty products, clothes or shoes like this new generation does lol that’s not where I find my security. I prefer the simple things

All these replies from the females.

What you need to feel fulfilled as a woman is a loving family with many kids. Not iPhones and Instagram.

I call this generation of women - generation Dog Mom and Aunt Mom. Bring on the Prozac and Xanax.

Please don’t .... they can be addictive (the drugs I mean)

As for many kids...not always a good idea as some parents aren’t able to mind them. I

was chatting with a teen who tells me she was expected to look after her siblings and it’s kind of taken away her freedom....not good

I’d a friend who was from a large family...she said she never got to know her parents and it screwed her up

Don’t take on more than you can handle, it’s not fair on the children

Are you a speaker for the womenkind? Ah, the motherhood seen by men who have little to do to the actual raising of offspring!

Have you actually got to hear the thoughts of such women, with several kids? The real thoughts while they nurse, wash the shit, feed, argue with, shout at, become exhausted, and not what they pretend on social forums?

I did. And it's nothing nice to hear!

OK since you opened the door on next level financial concepts I feel like its safer to expound without feeling like its introducing too much. The whole concept of fund appropriation. What you do with your money instead of buy stuff you dont really need/use enough to justify its purchase. Another way to do this is use the income those investments you bought bring in instead of having to sell the investment and lose the recurring income. This way takes longer.

For some people it may be easier to be less materialistic than others. But I've become less and less over the years. There was a point where I thought about a new(er) car because that was what people were driving around. At some point I stoped caring. Not interested in paying $ 600 or whatever for a Dodge srt or whatever to keep up with a bunch of people I dont wanna deal with anyway. Money can be better used elsewhere (such as 1st paragraph example) Im embracing minimalism over excess stuff as far as physical "possessions" go. a challenge is getting rid of the burdensome stuff from before when a new perspective is obtained.

True, but what is the ultimate goal of saving everything? Financial security and early retirement, most likely? What if you can easily get a job that you actually enjoy, and have a good pension? What is the point of living poorly during your best years and plentiful later in life? Can you really convince yourself to change your habits and spend, spend, spend later in life? Many people leave behind their entire savings when they die.... it's like they've worked their entire life for someone else....

Personally, I prefer experiences like travel to material things...can't wait to be able to travel freely again! As for things, it's really the beauty and comfort that I crave, not the novelty, or competing with the joneses.

Lol I had the opposite problem. I'm a minimalists. If I didn't need it, I shrugged my shoulders and said no thanks. Even with money.

Now shit has come up in the last few years, I'm unprepared. I didn't see those things were a issue, however I have responsibilities and their needs differ from my own.

I'm still a minimalist. I Now think of everything in terms as if it's a resource. I've grown practical with it. Flexibility= adaptability.

That being said. Even if I become a millionaire you will not be catching me in a + $ 30k shinny paper weight. It's all about the bang for your buck!

It's called getting old, and yes.

I spent my 20s getting to the point I could make enough money to have all the stuff I wanted. Now I realize all the stuff I wanted is meaningless, and money will never make anyone happy.

On a good note working for a living and constantly making a ton of money regardless of happiness is now muscle memory for me. Every story has the potential for a happy ending, even if that ending is one day is leaving this meat prison for good. Hopefully.

getting into a flow state of building your own career, hobby or side hustle or just anything you're passionate about is always helpful! It's a better way of spending productive time away from social media and those kind of things, and just spending time on yourself.

also developing and learning more about spirituality and me as a person has helped too. Such as meditating and activating chakras and studying them. Crystals. Rituals.

also do things that speak to your soul and help reset yourself. For me, that's hiking in nature, it helps brings me back to my soul and my purpose in the world. And dancing, singing and just listening to music I love. And baking or just learning a new recipe.

Basically anything that will keep you away from social media, even technology sometimes is good and you don't think so much about material, superficial things when you listen to your heart and soul.

I’ve bought some really nice clothes and stuff for the home from charity shops ... my designer lover friend calls them unique boutiques

The most expensive item i bought was a white sheepskin coat with fur trim (not real) and I have lots of comments about it. Cost me 10 quid! I’ve spent more on dry cleaning costs lol.
