So we are going to the pound tomorrow to look at the little guy. My BF has wanted one for a long time and wants a pup so it can be trained well. I've never had one, but have had Akita's and a pit bull in the past. Right now I have two little Chihuahua's that I took in as rescues. I've done a lot of research on German Shepherds...just wondering if anyone here has had them and if you can give any advice on their good and bad aspects.

I had a badly bred shepherd that was very dominant and I could not handle her even at 10 weeks old - we found her a good home and she bit the woman on the ear in the car on the way home - omg we laughed but it wasn't funny - they kept her and loved her which we were thankful of

then later on I got my shepherd, a Shiloh - the most beautiful, most wonderful dog I've ever seen and/or owned ... she was with me for 11 years until I had to put her down last year and I will forever miss her

watch the temperament of the dog you are getting - you do not want dominant or submissive - somewhere in between, not shy but curious, alert, friendly and follows - read all you can and learn up before you get the puppy and take good training lessons - very important !

Thank you. I will want his temperament tomorrow when we meet him and play with him. I told my BF that I want to do training lessons when we get one so thank you for the confirmation. I am also thinking that since my other dogs are small I would like to have him go to doggie day care a few days a week to get him well socialized and so he can really play.

We will see if it is a good match tomorrow. 🙂

Well we ended up not getting the little guy. The pound does a lottery if more then 1 person wants the dog on its first day of availability. Even though I was the first one there (I showed up very very early) there were at least 20 other people there wanting him too. A family with two younger boys got him. I hope that he will be well loved and taken care of.

We are still planning on getting one and will probably go through a GSD rescue to get him. I want to thank you guys for your advice, I really appropriate it! I'm going to keep doing my research and now will have time to find a good trainer and day care in the area before we bring a new fuzzy baby home. 🙂

I had an Akita but I don't have children and my Sugar was never around small children only older, 5 and above, and was always fine with them. My girlfriend has an Akita and when she was pregnant with her first baby she read up a lot on introducing the dog to a new baby. There were things like not allowing the dog in the babies room, and teaching the dog that he could be around the baby but there were boundaries that couldn't be crossed.

I tend to agree with Plagued. A dog can get annoyed just like we do. If the baby is in his space or grabbing for a toy that the dog wants he doesn't understand that the baby is more fragile unless to taught that. He'll give warning but a toddler won't understand that is what he is doing. Dogs can get jealous too. I think you have to look at the situation and know your dog.
