I had a father too, who taught me how men are as well. It was an example about not taking everything for face value. I grew up around some of the guys you're describing, "picture perfect" but slime balls underneath.

First time I hear about this. It should be transparent. But, I know something similar which in my opinion is far worse. Settling again for regular sex, girlfriend experience, etc while they know all along that they don't see the future, but stay in a relationship for years, acting like an average boyfriend, postpone the marriage and kids as much as they can, just to dump the woman when she is 35, and then knock up someone else within 6 months. Anyway, I never said I judge men by the outside. When you get to know someone you start to notice subtle clues on how they are..you'll have to be dumb to not pick up on these.
A guy a few years back was soo set on dating me..he told everyone he thought I was gorgeous and he wants to make me happy. He was such a gentleman just so he can get me to be his girlfriend. Seems good right? Nope. Everyone was confused when I wouldn't date him..but I knew the truth about him. He constantly put down other women to bring me up (Jen is soooo ugly compared to you) and he always called his sister a "dumb slut". He hated animals (my personal red flag) and he tried to discourage me from continuing college because he was going to "take care of me" LOL.
THOSE are the things I'm talking about. It just seemed like he wanted me, just to have me. I don't even know why he wanted me so much. But I'm glad I trusted my gut because after I told him NO, I don't want you he told everyone I was a stuck up whore.
My fiancé isn't rich. He doesn't have a corporate job nor does he have a perfect life and doesn't come from the best home (divorce) but he's pure and it's really rare to find someone so pure with a golden heart, at his age. With my past relationships I didn't trust them...but with him I don't have an ounce of distrust. He's it, and if that makes me naive then I'm sorry, but it just seems like you're projecting based on your OWN failed experiences. We've all been hurt girl, but to wait for any and every man to fail isn't the way to live life.
