Dont fall for it, they just do that to feel good about himself and feed his ego. They want you but will never admit it. And he will keep playing this game until you stop it.! He wants you to be there as a back up plan... I was on your same shoes a while ago.
Happened to me with my Gemini Ex. After 4+ years, we still talk here and there, We both know we like each other, we both know we cant be in the same bedroom alone, but we both moved on.
This guy never left me alone with that same story that he wanted to be my friend, that he didnt want me to see him as the bad guy (even tho he lied and cheated on me to his teeth), that he didnt want me to be upset with him, that he didnt want me to hate him... Exactly all the same exact things this one is telling you - he used to call me 35 times in a day and when I picked up he just wanted to say hi. But everytime I asked him if he wanted to get back to me, he kept saying he just wanted to be friends. He used to call me and invite me out, even when he was in a relationship.
I had to tell him several times to leave me alone at the same time that I had to cut him loose. for him to leave me alone. And i told him when Im ready to be his friend, I will let him know.
