Chris’ joke was out of line, but Will overreacted big time. How he publicly assaulted someone on stage, and the show just continued on as though nothing happened was odd. I thought for sure he would get escorted to the exit.

This is why I hate many stand up comedians. They deliver such low blows to people that have done nothing to them, or don't deserve it, and they don't even know in the first place.
And course, everyone laughs at the butt of the joke (the person being joked about) who is publicly humiliated, angry, possibly even hurt. Not to mention feeling pressured to maintain their composure, making them unable to defend themselves and retaliate while the asshole comedian is probably thinking "haha I'm putting you on the spot and you can't do anything about it".
Because God forbid the person being joked about reacts negatively. People will say or think "he can't take a joke" or "I lost respect for this person".
If you're going to fire some shots, you better have a damn good reason and be able to stand behind your words.

I dont understand the joke tbh. Will is real stressed rn tho. I mean Jada has said way back in the early 2000s that she never wanted to be married or have kids. She said she cried on her wedding day.....cuz she didnt wanna get married. So I can imagine how he feels with all of this backed up misery coming to the surface.

I will admit that I don't know whether it's real or not. I'm skeptical but to an extent. I wouldn't go as far as to say I know for sure it's fake or scripted.
It could be fake, making everything I wrote about it prior to this comment pointless. Or it could be real. Either way, fake or not, it's entertainment and entertaining to watch so I'll form an opinion assuming it's real just in case it applies lol.

All things consider (he's a black, famous, American & in a public setting / in private even Chris Rock might react differently - not just stand there confused of what to do or say next) - it's no surprise things didn't get more serious. Unless he KO'ed Chris Rock (or at least punch him hard enough to making him bleed), smacked a woman (in same way), got caught doing some pedo shit, peed on teenagers or something along those lines (more serious if you will) - the only repercussion he'll face is getting memed on the internet. If just one of those details would differ (famous but white or black but not famous & smacked Chris Rock) - everyone would loose their shit in the media. For example, instead of Will Smith - imagine Mel Gibson doing the exact same thing - cause of some joke about him... 💩
As and old saying goes: It's not about what was said or done but WHO said/done that. Kinda like this recent thing with the Kardashians - where Kim thought she was in a position to lecture (ahem ahem "advise") others about success earned though hard work... 🙄 Only the right people at the right time - can get away with doing or saying some shit.

He got smacked not punched. 😛 A half serious strike (damage wise - tho, it can still damage hearing if - smacked on the ear), more commonly used by women - even mothers smacking their disobedient child (well, mostly - in the old days - that is). 😃 It's what they call a "bitch-slap" - mainly intended for humiliation.

I just read Will was witness to the domestic violence his mother suffered by his father. He felt guilty long after for not protecting her when he was a child. The hate for his dad remained too. While caring for him when his father was diagnosed with cancer, he thought about killing him there and then.
This could be the result of a childhood wound surfacing at the worst time or Jada triggering the ghost of 2pac inside of him

When I first saw it, I thought it was fake mainly cause of the fake mic sound and seeing both guys stance and wills hand aiming down with a weak slap hand.
Then when I knew it was fake was the reactions, Chris Rock pretty much gave it away, even will kinda laughs as he's walking back. As someone who's been in fights and seen them firsthand, they rarely elicit those type of reactions, even from bystanders.
Then to add to it, just think how someone can walk so casually towards someone and hit them then walk back. You'd definitely have some background people step in.

1. Will Smith laughed at the joke first. If it was fake, his reaction would have been consistant from the moment they cut to him.
2. After the slap Chris Rock obviousely had a hard time getting back to his speech, performing as if in shock. There was no punchline in his performance which they would have had if it was staged and not just left it out there hanging..
3. Will Smith dropping the F-bomb. Unacceptable at the Oscars!
4. Behind-the-scenes video of Will's colleagues comforting him after they cut to commercial
5. Chris declining to file a police report, according to LAPD! Surely if it was fake the LAPD would have been informed beforehand, that's how that works.
6. It's not a seedy stand up club so joking about violence - especially two black men getting at it - would have been inappropriate in this time and place and the Acadamy wouldn't stand by it
7. The fact that they apperantly cut the live show in the US right as Chris was about to get slapped but this is only something one DXP'er claimed so may not be true. The rest are facts.
