It's far more likely he was more hurt from your fight then he's letting on. He's probing to see how much you value the friendship and was looking to get some confirmation from you before he starts to emotionally detach from the friendship.
At least that's my interpretation from what very little you've shared here.

See there is no right nor a wrong answer Herr. Firstly, he may have expressed his feelings by addressing the issue(the fight you guys had) and since he reached out to you after the argument he could have felt he made his point clear to you that you are important to him. And his ego won't hinder him from reaching out despite a misunderstanding.
