The very definition of white privilege. The opportunity to object to what you’re being taught in school.

As a black person, we were forced to learn whatever was presented to us. We learned about black people 1 month out of the year and it was always the “safe” stories. MLK, slavery. I was shocked when we took a class trip to see the film Amistad. But black history always started with slavery. That’s it. Nothing before that. Funny, no one objected to that.

The only thing we learned about Native Americans was thanksgiving. I didn’t realize Christopher Columbus and his peers killed off the natives until decades later.

One little minutia about white privilege and people lose their shyt.

I remember history class and the scores of white presidents we had to learn about. One picture after the next hanging up around the class.

Indoctrination?

Yes, it's an example of both white privilege for the reasons you mentioned and even more besides, and capitalistic indoctrination, the two being very closely linked. Capitalism is based on hierarchical structures, and race, sex, gender, sexuality, etc, are quick ways to establish self-enforcing hierarchies.

Idk man, all I know is read the Narrative of Frederick Douglass recently and it should be required reading in American schools. I'm sure some schools read it, but mine didn't. It's not only an important text in American history, it's also well written and "entertaining" (entertaining in the sense that it's also written artistically, poetically. It's not just a dry, boring account of his life. It's an amazing story and an extremely important one

I will take you up on that.

Have you read Autobiography of Harriet Tubman. I didn’t even know her real name till my 30s when o read the book.

My mom made me watch Shaka Zulu.

Roots was not required reading and it should come on annually like the Ten Commandments

Our teacher would give a note to the two black kids to skip that wk or attend. I attended to not let my peers get out of line. I only got to see Shaka Zulu with my virg bro in the summertime. I was instantly captivated by that empowering series. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Your mom seemed woke

I haven't, I'll put it on the list to read at some point though

Douglass's account is relatively short, straight to the point, and powerful stuff though, I know that. It's not just an important document in relation to slavery, Douglass himself is an important figure in American history who rose from a slave to an influential writer that became an advisor to the federal government. He really deserves a bigger spotlight than he seems to get. Simply reading the story of his life would have more impact on people than any lecture by a teacher imo

Was it him or Marcus Garvey who said that the Black American should return to Africa?
