So, I inquired about a nanny to watch my kids for a few days during the summer. She said she wanted $ 18/hr to watch 2 kids. Do the math on that. If she watches them 10 hours a day for 5 days a week that's $ 46,800/yr!
is that the going rate ?
If it is, I'm switching jobs! 4 kids and I'm set

you could even afford medical with being nanny to 4 kids at that rate lol

That's not very much for a 50 hour work week, in my opinion.
Considering my kids can fend for themselves, it is. I mean, that's $ 3,600/mo to sit on your ass and watch soaps all day

If this is the case, then you don't need a nanny. Most people hire nannies for smaller children, therefore there is no "sitting on one's ass". If your kids are at an age that they can fend for themselves, then they can easily be sent to a day camp.

Unless you live in some podunk town in Texas, in a hyper rural area, then almost all communities have day camps for kids. And if you live in a podunk town in Texas, 12 is old enough to keep yourself out of trouble and in my opinion, be left alone as long as there are ways to communicate.

I was left alone at home in Texas at the age of 10.

Lol. Day camps aren't near me.

I'd let him watch my 8 year old daughter if their mother wouldn't try to have me arrested or something. Hence, why I can't/won't leave them home alone. Nearest place I could take him is 30mins in the opposite direction from the Aries work path. It's simply not feasible.

I had a single mother, that worked 3 jobs, while getting a degree in Chemical Engineering.

Out of necessity in life, sometimes one has to do what is needed to provide a house over one's family's head. At 10, I was cooking, cleaning, and contributing to our home because it was needed, and my mom taught me as such.

However, for me, as a parent now, and given the vastly different pace and it all depends on the area you reside in. For me, geography really determines a lot of things. I would never leave my son at the age of 10 by himself here, but if I still resides in the hyper rural parts of Texas, I would probably be more inclined to allow him more freedom because of the pace of living, and smaller towns "know" everyone.

I was going to suggest a camp since you might feel your money is actually going to activities that way but I read where you said they don't do that in your area

I find that hard to believe - most schools offer these types of programs for the summer
Well, some schools do offer programs like that but their school is 147 miles from where I live

Nearest place I could take him is 30mins in the opposite direction from the Aries work path. It's simply not feasible.

so, you actually DO have a place to take him.

But, you'd rather pay an excessive amount of money for a nanny, than be inconvenienced 30 minutes.

I'll break it down into logistics since you wanna try to be an ass on this.

Say I take them to the day camp. I can't do it because I leave the house at 2:45-3am to get to work. The Aries can't do it because they don't take them before 6:30am. She has to be downtown at 8. There's no possible way to make it there in time. So, the answer is still a big fat NO

Here, let me break it down for you, since you wanna try and say you can NOT do any/all things proposed to you.

To be a parent means you have to go out of your way to provide for them .... even it means you have to rise an hour earlier. Even if it means you have to find transportation for them to get to a day camp in the mornings so you don't have to pay 18 bucks an hour to sit them.

Even if it means you do have to pay 18 bucks an hour to sit them .....

You just want to complain about your responsibility, and in what you have to do to provide for your kids ..... now THAT'S being an ass about it.

No wonder their mother doesn't really trust your judgment with them, and has to monitor you.

So, I inquired about a nanny to watch my kids for a few days during the summer. She said she wanted $ 18/hr to watch 2 kids. Do the math on that. If she loibe 0s them 10 hours a day for 5 days a week that's $ 46,800/yr!
What is the average hourly rate in your area Ssuperman ?

I have absolutely no idea

$ 18 per hour for a 12 and 8 year old is

excessive... they are low maintenance.

Responsible college age kid is fine... I did it at

that age-- the kids were about the same age

as yours.

I would suggest references though.

It's excessive ... so is an hour round trip when

you're trying to get to work. o.O

And day camp for school age children is not

almost $ 200 per day... nor even $ 100 per day,

on average.

And...

Nearest place I could take him is 30mins in the opposite direction from the Aries work path. It's simply not feasible.

so, you actually DO have a place to take him.

But, you'd rather pay an excessive amount of money for a nanny, than be inconvenienced 30 minutes.

That's not excessive and it's ONLY for the summer. Summer camps are more than that.

It's excessive ... so is an hour round trip when

you're trying to get to work. o.O

And day camp for school age children is not

almost $ 200 per day... nor even $ 100 per day,

on average.

He stated 2 kids for $ 18.

So one I'm assuming is $ 9.00. Summer camp is much more expensive than daycare and just regular babysitting because it's a short period of time not the whole year.

^^ Less than $ 6 per hour, per kid, for top tier.

And they have major overhead.
