By nature, most humans are going to love and by biased towards their own. As for racism I'd say it's about a 7.
6 or 7, but I do agree that it is much more hidden or masked now. It is not accepted as much,so i think people keep their racist views to themselves more so except when in the company of others that they know share the same views.
I'd say it's at about a 7 or 8. Def. agree that it's just masked a lot more
I think interracial dating being more acceptable & desired has really helped. Maybe not liked by the families of those in the relationship lol but nonetheless at least those couples represent 2 more individuals who finally put the race thing to bed

Honestly I'd say it's probably LOWER than what most people imagine. At least TRUE racism (i.e. the belief of racial superiority/segregation/etc.)I'd say the majority of people in the world have racist TENDENCIES and/or views, and I DON'T think its innate, but I think that its a natural development unless a person is surrounded by people of all cultural and racial backgrounds. I think xenophobia is a naturally developed trait, and it makes sense from an evolutionary view as well.
That being said...
When I moved to a predominantly white high school, first day of school I had more than one teacher after asking me if I spoke English (a valid question) ask me if I knew how to READ. Totally racist notion on their end. But that didn't make them racists. I think there are fewer true, old-school racists. Ex. I've seen a lot of people make assumptions based on race (racists tendencies) yet they have utter contempt for the KKK, and would never dream of lynching anyone.
This might piss people off, but the entire Zimmerman case/media shit storm was a blatant example of the racist views a great many people have. But I don't think that's on the same level as someone actively attempting for racial superiority.
As a mixed race individual, race is often an issue that people bring up when they first meet me, so I've seen a lot of people's ignorance towards such matters. BUT I've only ever had to deal with maybe a handful of TRUE racists.
I got in a fight with a neo-nazi type mofo once, cause I looked in his direction and he wasn't letting me get away with that shit lmao. But for nearly every person I ever met who referred to me as a spick, nigger, chink, or cracker (MANY people) there's a person who pretty much forgot about my race once they got to know me. No true racists would take the time to get to know me.
Then again, I DO enjoy the benefits of white-guilt. Racism is rampant!

Also, I think people confuse race and culture. They're tied together in many instances, and I hear more bitching and complaining about cultural differences than actual race.

Not once have I ever thought any race was more inferior or superior than the other. I am aware of all the stereotypes & typical racist rants, but I've never joined in on one. Never.

I'm aware that many people have racism in their bones to some extent, but NOT all people. Assuming that "all people" believe/think/are the same way to some extent is the exact same flawed way of thinking that racist people use in the 1st place.
By the way, I am black. Black men don't scare me or intimidate me. The only time I'll be tense near anybody (regardless of race) is when they give me a reason to be tense. I watch their demeanor & allow my gut and instinct to dictate how I feel in the presence of another person, NOT their skin color.
And trust me, I've felt that "suspicious" feeling with ALL races near a subway. Unlike you, I don't use convenient memory & only remember when I felt suspicious around a black person, while leaving out that I've had that same feeling towards many people of ALL races, not just 1 or 2.
Just b/c it's impossible for you to break out of narrow-minded thinking does not mean that the same is true for everybody else. There's a lot of interracial mix in my family & I love it. Not to mention, I am mixed with a few things myself.

I've experienced racism from ALL races. I've also experienced LOVE, good vibes & good memories from ALL races too. This keeps me from stereotyping. Plus, I don't let people speak for me or tell me that I'm included in the "all," especially if I'm really not.
The 1 thing racist people have in common is they have this self-righteous mentality that "ALL" of a specific race or people period are the same way, not b/c there's any evidence of the such, but b/c they have moments when they feel like being ignorant. They can't think outside of their own thinking.
I don't believe that people are "ALL" of anything. There's a difference b/w "most" & "all." And even then, a person can't say that "most" people are anything unless they've got facts/statistics to back it up. In a world full of billions of people, I am not arrogant enough to believe that MY little experiences are the same experiences for everybody. I'm just 1 person in a pond of a billion fish. I wish others were humble enough to understand that too.
I understand the concept that my perception of someone/someone may not even be accurate or true of others in the like. Perception & reality can be and are def. 2 different things. Again, this reminds me not to stereotype
The same people saying it's impossible for someone to not be racist to some degree are using the same 1-sided thinking racist people use when they conclude that ALL people of a specific race must be a certain way. They just can't possibly imagine things being any other way than what they themselves are/believe. I'm hoping people notice the similarities in that specific way of thinking.

It depends on the area. For example, if you take a look at Northern (East) and Western states, then you'll see less and less racism, but on the other hand, the South, also known as the Bible Belt, then, you'll see more racism, xenophobia, homophobia, etc.
in the North it is more covert.

@Gemini: I tend to get defensive when someone speaks for me, especially regarding something that I consider highly offensive. If you haven't noticed, racism has always been a tense subject. I think it's fair to say that you should've expected that in a thread like this.
I'm not angry, nor do I have any personal beef with you as a person. I responded to only some of the things you said, which is why I quoted you sometimes. For the most part, my defensiveness was more towards the others who are being highly ignorant & spewing their racism on this thread. That level of defensiveness wasn't for you.
The only thing I disagree with you about is when you said that it's impossible for anybody in this world to not be racist to some extent. I was pointing out that although there may not be a lot of people like me, I just so happen to be the 1 person who actually ISN'T racist to any degree at all, thus I felt it was fair for me to show you how even your own assumptions of "all" people can be wrong.

I took the test and the result said: "Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for European American children compared to African American children."
It makes me wonder: in the media, we are far more exposed to white people than blacks. In ads and billboards, white kids and adults are most frequently used, in the news, white anchors are hired, in entertainment, in mainstream TV shows are dominated by white actors, and so on and so forth. Perhaps this played a role with my results. I wonder if the same would apply to gender bias? I wonder if my results would show a slight bias towards men.

I took the test and the result said: "Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for European American children compared to African American children."
It makes me wonder: in the media, we are far more exposed to white people than blacks. In ads and billboards, white kids and adults are most frequently used, in the news, white anchors are hired, in entertainment, in mainstream TV shows are dominated by white actors, and so on and so forth. Perhaps this played a role with my results. I wonder if the same would apply to gender bias? I wonder if my results would show a slight bias towards men.

That's a good point and I think perhaps it might. I don't think I can form a certain opinion on that as I'm not a racial minority, however. That site also has a test for gender bias and other biases if you were genuinely interested. I may take that one just to test this theory.
I actually remember watching a documentary that was about power. The speaker was a black African woman who talked about how all the books she read as a kid involved white people. She grew up thinking that white people were the standard and beautiful because of this and wanted to be light skinned, herself. It makes me believes that it really does have to do with what you're exposed to.
Blame the fucking British for instilling this mindset all over the world.

I am highly aware that racism still exist. My only argument went out to the people who assumed that just b/c they can't rid themselves of the few racist bones in their body doesn't mean that me or others didn't. THAT was my point.
I don't let people speak for me & then continue trying to put me in a box with everybody else even though I've said I didn't belong in that box. Not only do I know allow people to put me in a racial box, but I don't allow them to tell me how I think or what I believe in either. THAT was all.

If you're insinuating that me not judging by race makes me "too naive" then trust me, I'd rather take the title of "naive" than "ignorant." What is the world coming to when someone is actually criticized for NOT discriminating against other people? LOL so so sad

The only question is prevalence. Some people have said that everyone is a racist. That is not true. Only a racist would actually believe that, though. A racist or just an idiot. Seriously, that's some Hitleresque logic. Anyone who argues that needs to educate themselves.
The thing about actual racists, is that they aren't afraid to admit it. That's the reality of it, and if you notice- people who claim that 'EVERYONE IS A RACIST' never seem to have a problem admitting to it. No, they proudly OWN it, and then try and justify it, and then and try and paint EVERYONE else the same color (pun intended) as themselves. That's the thing about bigots, is they think everyone else thinks like them, and if not they try and convince people that they do. That is how brainwashing works- you don't just tell someone a lie, you don't just give reasons why it's true, you tell them that if they look inside, they'll know its true. That they'll have to accept something as fact at some point. Bullshit that only works on weak-minded individuals.

A racist is someone who thinks that a persons value is linked to their race. That is it, that is the definition.

Couldn't have said it better. Racist people are so wrapped up in their own inability to abolish their own close-mindedness that they assume all others are battling the same demon. Bigot thinking is when you can't possibly stomach that others don't think/act like you. Are there lots of bigots? Of course. But is everyone a bigot? NO. But hey, it's common for a bigot to sub-consciously refuse to acknowledge that "everybody is/thinks this way" is ONLY limited to THEIR thinking.
Racism is a LEARNED behavior. When it comes to nature vs. nurture, racism is NURTURE. And there is no statistical evidence or cognitive psychological conclusion to conclude otherwise.
Children are NOT born racist or prejudice
Everybody is not victim to racial brainwashing, just like everybody isn't victim to religious brainwashing. There is no such thing as "everybody is..." when it comes to NURTURE. Even when it comes to "nature"...even then some people "lack" or "don't have the desire for" something they've been told everybody naturally is or has.

2 billion people being muslim won't change the fact that I'm not
4 billion people feeding into the media's version of beauty doesn't mean that I do
There are different types of brainwashing or LEARNED cognitive behaviors. And racial brainwashing is just ONE in a pond of many. There is a huge difference between "most" & "all." Everybody doesn't fall victim to the same brainwashing ponds.

You watch comedians whose gigs are NOTHING but racist, listen to music with racist lyrics, watch movies and television with racist connotation and you're NOT racist? Lol! Your WHOLE source of entertainment is racism. You are what you eat, right, except add 2 more: you ARE what you see and hear, in which case only way you're NOT racist is if you packed ALL media and moved out of society's reach to become a hermit...again, you not do that cuz you don't like hermits either.

I can watch a movie or listen to a song about blowing people up with machine guns. Doesn't mean I believe it's right, nor does it mean that I'm gullible enough to go buy some machine guns & shoot people up. Not once has Snooki inspired me to be a club rat, or Bruce Lee inspired me to go around kicking everybody's azz, or Tupac inspired me to condone violence.
Hell, I have to hear about religion in almost every aspect of media/entertainment too, but not once have I ever wavered in my faith towards what I've believed in from the beginning.
No matter how much the media tries to convince me that "all" or "most" muslims are terrorists who should make us all uncomfortable on an elevator or airplane, I will never & have never fed into that.
No matter how much the media/family/entertainment brainwashes women into believing that they must be married & have children in order to be considered a real "woman," doesn't change the fact that some women never fed into that & could give a hot F what the media/society says
Society might control YOUR mind, but not mine. Speak only for yourself
There's religion, sexuality, violence, discrimination, terrorism to self and others, drugs, etc. in almost every aspect of media & society but NOT ONCE have I:
-Wanted to become Catholic or Muslim just bc the masses are (or bc I'm exposed to it)
-Wanted to sleep around, go nude & use my body to make others think I'm beautiful (just b/c millions of other women got brainwashed into doing that)
-Wanted to kill or harm someone just b/c most movies, video games, reality tv shows & politicians expose me to it
-Wanted to try drugs b/c I see lots of others swearing it's a great high & way of escaping from reality (their beliefs BEFORE rehab becomes necessary)
NOT ONCE!
You can't accuse someone of being brainwashed towards a specific thing unless you've seen proof of that. So far, I and those who truly know me have seen no proof of such.
I'm not 1 of these people who don't believe in the power of brainwashing. I get it. Some people start believing & feeding into stuff if they see the mass/majority doing so. NOT EVERYBODY DOES THOUGH

How prevalent is racism in this country (U.S.) right now?
1 being (doesn't exist that much at all anymore), 5 being (It's still prevalent but things have gotten much better) or 10 being (It's def. still more prevalent than people think/getting worse)
