some insight into the appeal for bernie.

Posted by WhiteChocolatePosted by CancerOnTheCuspBut so far no hallucinogenics and butt rape in this thread.Posted by WhiteChocolateOh crap. We just had three contentious threads and that subject and now we can expect more..Posted by SuperMercurialThey're flirting.Posted by FinbuffFirst of all, I ended it with "the dream" ya twit. Second, universities are starting to lower rates on gen ed class credits to $ 50 to compete with community colleges. Economics is a social science, and I know more about it than you I'm willing to bet. Do you have any higher degrees in economics? It doesn't sound like it. These economists out here are fucking radical as hell when it comes to predictions. They're no statisticians.Posted by SuperMercurialI suspect you are about 19, 20 tops? You have a lot to learn, as illustrated by that post. I suggest finishing high school first, then college where for sure you need a few semesters of Econ.
I don't think the people should have to pay for college students' degrees. These kids don't deserve that, and there are too many degrees that don't need all these people majoring in them. I just think the cost of $ 11,300 per year at a state university is too high especially when minimum wage is shit. People with student loans should have them refinanced at lower interest rates, and people should no longer to be able to take out federal loans for university so that these boards lower the tuition rate to $ 50 a credit. The dream.
Why are all of these old guys trying to talk down to me?

Posted by FinbuffSo there's only two systems of beliefs when it comes to politics? And even if there were just two, a well rounded person would pick and choose from both in the end, not just go blindly with one or the other.Posted by AfternoonDelights22If you say, "I'm a registered independant", to me it just means you don't have any idea what you stand for. Independants are not a political party, just a faceless label applied to people that have no conviction about anything politcal.
I'd say logic is the appeal.
Of all the viable candidates you have Hillary. Probably the most inconsistent of them all. She will say anything to appeal to certain people at any given moment. Most things she says now totally goes against past statements and votes and hell even reading her stances and watches debates I really dont know what her plan is at all.Its like she just wants to get elected no matter what and if she is just gonna be a place holder for everything Obama.
Then we have the corporate champion The Rick Rubio whose tax plan is to mostly help the corporations. Yes the corporations and the 1% will have the biggest tax cut of all. Ahhh smell the logic!
Donald Trump actually has some decent ideas if you can shovel through the shit he says. He certainly a moderate and not a republican which can actually be good when facing congress and yet he decides to be a circus show and go to extremes on immigration while spouting racism. Its just not smart.
Ted Cruz seems to get pushed aside by some republicans and I do not understand why. Sometimes I wonder if people actually try and learn about candidates because he is republican through and through. His downfall is his extremes. Sanders gets hit for his supposed extremes while Mr Cruz thinks in his long term plan he can eliminate the IRS altogether. rofl good luck with that!
While some of Sanders ideas would be impossible to pull off but the fact is some things continue to get more and more expensive and the middle class growth has stopped. The cost of Health care and college is ridiculous. People be paying off loans their whole life. Im a registered independent and sometimes swing right or libertarian, but where conservatives always lose me is in the lack of logic in the anti abortion + pro guns + no to universal health care. Sorry but those 3 things together do not logically correlate. The picking and choosing of issues that dont go together is always a facepalm.
I think the biggest thing tho, like Dazed said is that he isnt a liar. His record is by far the most consistent and hes been around quite awhile. Who couldnt logically get behind someone you can actually believe has your best interest.click to expand

Posted by littlemegabyteLearn to work the textbook system and you're set.Posted by SuperMercurialThere are tons of scholarships/grants if your GPA sits at ~3.5 and above. I have one. But it does not cover even close to the costs needed to pay for everything, it's mostly just my books, which have costed upwards of $ 650/semester for me. It also depends on your major. STEM fields desperately need females, so there are many scholarships for women studying in those fields.

Posted by SuperMercurialHaha, that stupid web key access shit. I remember that.
The unfortunate part about the school edition books is that they usually come with a web component, and for a long time, you couldn't get the web component without buying the book. A lot of profs don't want you spending that kind of money though and will find ways around it.
Posted by SuperMercurialActually, they do, dear. Those fields have some serious under representation of females in these fields. And you CAN get grants, but they just won't be as much. I had one year that I had to report my mom's income, after that, I didn't have to and I got so much more money. You also have to keep a FT status if you want all of the aid you qualify for. Pell grant gets cut considerably if you fall to part time.
You can't get a grant if your parents make a certain amount or above. Are you a freshman? A lot of people can get a $ 5000 presidential scholarship their first year if they did well in high school. They don't desperately need females lol. That's ridiculous.click to expand

Posted by littlemegabyteOmg that reminds me, I was able to get a copy of my exercise nutrition book digitally through the library. You have all sorts of crazy access to research papers and the like, including digital book sources. All I had to do was request it, waited a few days while they got all the stuff in order and then told me I could access it via my student account.
@rockyroadicecream
That is good advice, I do need to be more intelligent about purchasing my textbooks. It turns out many of them can be pirated online! I like having the physical copy, and last semester I received my grant late. The school "made an error in processing it", so by the time it applied to my tuition, all that was available were the NEW physical copies of the book, which I needed in order to avoided being dropped from the course (for not being prepared, lol). I am going to try to find all the books online, because it is seriously bullshit. In addition to them making "school specific versions", they are also coming out with "2nd, 3rd, 4th, editions" in which they simply move the numbers on the homework exercises around. It is absolutely fucking ridiculous and frustrating.

Posted by WhiteChocolateHmmmm.....good point. But the tax base will still increase. I pay $ 400 a month for health insurance through my employer. So, if that stops and I'm paying $ 800 a month in more taxes, I don't see how that benefits me. (I'm making $ 400 less a month than I was). Sure, it will benefit some, but it will hurt me financially as it will for many more middle class people.
If course it's not free.
But the same principles that apply to infrastructure and emergency services and military apply to healthcare and education: spreading the cost out over all taxpayers reduces the individual costs for the mutual benefit of everyone.
Factcheck.org has already shown mathematically that Sanders health care plan would reduce costs for virtually the entire middle class. Take away your current health insurance premiums, and the tax increase is still significantly smaller.
If everyone had access to good healthcare...costs go down since you have a healthier population.
Same with education. The amount of additional taxes you'd pay would be less than your current costs. And an educated populace is going to create more economic growth and properity than a stupid one.

Posted by WhiteChocolateThose increases are local and are voted on by the public. It's not forced on them.
It still surprises me how many Americans don't bat an eyelash when taxes are raised to build a stadium for overgrown boys to chase around a ball and roll around on the ground with each other or when send shipping pallets of cash to the middle east to rebuild their roads and bridges, but can't stand the thought of their tax money helping out a neighbor or fellow citizen.

Posted by unknown2uAwww....thanks.Posted by truecapI agree with Truecap “nothing is free”, and I like the 20% flat tax rate. My husband, and I are on the 40% bracket and idk that can afford a 50% or > tax bracket. Truecap if you ever run for president, you got my vote🙂
Question to all of you wanting Free College and Free Healthcare --
You do realize it's not "free", don't you? Bernie wants to, and has said, he will increase taxes.
Once you get your 'free' degree and join the workforce, you will be paying a higher tax rate, just like the rest of us who are already paying high taxes.. So, long story short, that means less money in YOUR pocket and more to the government.
Of course, I could be wrong.....BUT, I'd rather pay 20% in taxes instead of 40% . (and yes, I made up those numbers, to provide an example). If my salary is $ 1000 a week and I give 20% to the government, I only get to spend $ 800. If taxes happen to double (and that's the only way I can imagine free college and healthcare), then I only get to spend $ 600 a week. - which REALLY hurts the economy in the long run and will actually make it even harder for struggling families.
(And I believe the tax rate should be a percentage. period. no tax breaks, no deductions, just a flat percentage where the poor pay less and the rich pay more).
Back to my point - yes, free sounds really good when you have nothing and are struggling, but once you're on your feet and making a decent income, looking at it from that angle, you could be actually making LESS than you would be otherwise.
And of course, this is coming out of my a $ $ and I could be wrong. Gosh! I HOPE I'm wrong!!
If you think I'm wrong, please enlighten me and educate me. I won't be offended as long as you don't call me an idiot, because this is actually the concern of a lot of people out there.click to expand

Posted by WhiteChocolateI agree with State's Rights. States should have more power.
Our state is extremely red. And they've instituted a state sponsored optional single payer health care plan. A republican governor and congress at that.
And so far, it's working well.
Other republican states and municipalities have free community college for citizens.
And it's working. They've shown demonstrable economic benefits.

Oh I'd also like to add...these concepts are assuming optimal circumstances.
Our government is and never has been an optimal circumstance. Regardless of how airtight or well developed a program is, some appointed government bureaucrat will turn it into a giant pile of fuck.

The decision to build Lucas Oil Stadium for the Colts here was decided by the state. Taxpayers were given no voice in the process.
Same with Bankers Life Fieldhouse for the Pacers. It fell under our Metropolitan Development Board. An appointed board who essentially had the power to increase local taxes autonomously.
In both cases, no fucks were given about involuntary tax increases.
But when the City County Counsel wants to raise taxes for schools and police all Hell breaks loose.
We spent millions on the Superbowl when it was here. While we DID recoup the money we spent getting ready, the long term economic benefits we were promised haven't materialized.click to expand

Posted by MontgomeryOh sweetie, you OBVIOUSLY didn't read the links.Posted by rockyroadicecreamPBS is absolutely, without a doubt, The 'feminazi' source-- it's governmentPosted by SuperMercurialOh sweetcheeks you need to CALM the fuck down. Nobody is telling you your life is "wrong." For someone who went to college, your comprehension skills are lacking quite severely.Posted by rockyroadicecreamVery false. Thats misinfornation spread by the feminazis.Posted by SuperMercurialActually, they do, dear.
That's ridiculous.
Ive received two summer grants before, they were for less than $ 200, but you submit a different form for summer tuition. I've contacted someone from fafsa asking them why I didnt receive any for regular semesters, and that is what they told me that I'm ineligible. Please dont tell me I'm wrong when this is my life. Things are done electronically now. You cant receive anything before completing the fafsa.

Note the lack of "feminazi" sources. Funny how that works...
(taxpayer) funded media.
Whitehouse.gov goes without saying... look whose in power.
lol... please.

Posted by rockyroadicecreamROBOTS!Posted by truecapThis is the fucking stupidest thing I've heard in my life.
People with college degrees are already flooding the job market and it's hard for them to find a job. What happens with everyone and their dog has a college degree?
Who's going to be willing to flip burgers or mop floors or work agriculture or cut hair?
You can't be serious. I like you chica, but this is fucking IGNORANT right here.click to expand
