Lol my husband and I were literally arguing over this last night. If you give a random person with any kind of foreign accent an English song to sing, they will definitely still have their accents, especially if they didn’t grow up listening to American music. So it just means when artists practice their songs, they do them in an American accent. American music has lots of influence over UK.

My 9 yo daughter raised that question few months ago. She is deeply in the youtube world of music and said that it was really weird how the Brits sing with American accent. But then she said that it would have sounded funny if they sang with their accent (started to imitate someone's singing in posh British accent, it was too funny), and she actually made the point lol.

My point is not whether musicians are singing with accent...my point that even people who statering singing without.

So if you sing without an accent it means accent is made up. I think.

How news people sounds on TV at USA South? With accent?

but i think what you're saying is singing "without an accent", you are singing with an american accent. believe it or not, americans have accents.

you guys aren't the baseline which everyone morphs from.

If course it’s not made up. It’s a product of where you live and who you associate with. Your accent can be changed through conscious effort.

This is her natural talking

This is how she sings

#mindblown

you're assuming that's her singing...

Of course it is. She is like a C+ singer AT best but yes, it's her singing. She is not bad. But definitely not a god-given talented vocalist. But hay, she's #gorgeous and is a pretty solid performer so I get the appeal. I'm a fan x

So does Celine Dion...

Beyonce, Mariah Carey and many of your faves

They just do it to pre-recorded vocals ~

Cheryl just pops in a CD because she's probably like "oh well, realistically not fooling anyone while looking like I'm exercising on a dick anyway"

lolz

a) none of those are my faves *shudder*

b) you were saying her singing voice sounds different to her speaking voice.

my point is that her "singing voice" is a creation of some guy working in an audio suite somewhere.

It was a general, overall statement. everyone screams "umgz lip-syncher" when they do not realize that many of the people they listen to lip-synch all the time.

Lol you cannot "create" a voice in the studio. Even if you use autotune, you still have to hit the notes. That's not quite how it works!

What is this supposed to prove?

it's to prove that you don't have to hit the high notes to sound good on a finished song.

and again, you're assuming that is cheryl cole singing. it could be anyone singing and morphed to give it the "cheryl cole" sound.

but i know you're a fan. don't worry. she's amazing. go back to sleep.

Also, we were singing before the USA even existed. Were we singing “American” then?

Exactly! Where you singing with an accent? Are there any examples of an old singing Brits?

Ooooo.... Well, this is embarrassing

I hope you realize that All I Want For Christmas Is You was released in 1994....

That was a younger Mariah in her prime over two decades ago...

Of course she isn't going to sound the same as she did back then. And even if she did perform it live THEN, there's a good chance she WOULDN'T sound as amazing as she did on the finished product because they are in the studio re-singing lines 4000 times to get them "perfect" and then cutting and pasting the vocals in like putting puzzle pieces together to create many songs, especially pop songs.

so you're saying that any song she releases now will be released with her singing flat and off key? if you can find an example, i'd love to hear it.

in truth, most artists are recording a song on average 3-5 times. not 4000.

It's because of singing techniques and the way we open our mouths when we sing. Also, this varies widely depending on the genre of music.

When I was young and in school in the uk our choir songs didn't sound American at all.

But when we sang pop songs, all of a sudden the accent would come out. I don't think we even realise we're doing it.

gasp.... finally, someone said it!! 😆

Haha but I remember asking this question innocently when I was a child and no one answered me properly until I started taking singing lessons.

Depends on the genre.

You have Green Day from the Bay Area sounding faux English punk,

Drake from Toronto trying to sound like he's from Brixton,

Ella Mai from London draws certain vowels in a classically-trained way ("trihppin" in most parts, "treepin" when belting)

I don't know if it's possible to sing R&B or country music without pronouncing 'can't' as 'kaynt'.
