The distance and absence of affection probably did a number on him, so he lost his passion for a few things.. Like cooking, financing, communication.

I think him wanting to move the restaurant to his hometown was the beginning of his downfall. He reached success, thought it was time to take it easier, became lazy, stopped being an actual chef, the restuarant suffered. It's a family run business so they equally suffer, she resents him for poor decisions that could cause them to loose everything while he has no drive or ambition to fight for it.
