Understanding Boundaries in Joking Relationships

Accepting playful insults in relationships varies. Some see it as harmless banter, while others find it offensive. Comfort levels depend on personal boundaries and mutual respect. Clear communication is key to ensuring both partners or friends feel comfortable and respected in these interactions.

Who here is okay with their S/O calling them ‘bitch’, ‘asshole’, ‘idiot’, ‘fat shit’, ‘fat ass’, ‘dickhead’ etc in a joking manner or in jest? Like it is a joke between the two of you and you say it to one another?

Also who is okay and comfortable with their friends speaking to them like that and then giving it back? Does it offend you? Do you feel it is unacceptable or totally normal?

Let us discuss

Not ok, not even as a joke. And I could never call my s/o that, I'm too much a gentleman lol

With friends, it depends on the word. Don't call me bitch even in jest. But you can call me an asshat, that's ok.

we sometimes argue in 3 different languages but we curse at the situation, not each other

with friends/acquaintances, maybe a little joking's fine

but oddly, we're more sensitive with each other

I see I see. So you would be angry at him for calling you a ‘bitch’ as a joke or calling you a ‘fat shit’ as a joke? Even if there was no mal intent behind it?

Nahhhh don’t think so

What about it makes you feel uncomfortable? Even if there’s no malice behind it or it is said purely for comedic effect, what makes you feel bothered about such terms being used between you and a partner or you and friends?

Heavens no

Do you feel that even if the intention isn’t bad or the feeling behind it is purely humorous it is still incredibly disrespectful or rude? I know people sometimes get typecast as over sensitive and humourless when they call people out on this stuff so just want to hear perspectives

It’s just basic respect. If there’s nothing nice to say, don’t say it...

obviously taking the piss out of each other occasionally and inside jokes are a thing but not par for the course and never habitual 🤷🏽‍♀️

I just wouldn't do it.

Why is that? Even if it’s done as a joke?

It's pretty much like wagtail said, it's important for me to respect a partner and vice versa.

I do agree with you. I think with deprecating and derogatory language you can lose that sense of respect you have for the individual even if it’s said in jest. I feel it can have a psychological impact over time.

Here we go, another "I don't like being called names in the bedroom, because I have a princess complex and expect to be treated like one" thread.

Whatever. I'm just relieved I'm not sleeping with any women who have the above mentality...

i don't think she's talking about that..

but more like every day conversation

I know, but this thread (like the other one) comes up every few months... and I just felt like trolling... 😄

You’ve misunderstood the entire premise of the thread then. Secondly if you were the last thing with a pulse on planet earth I’d rather fuck a bag of corn. Also I already know that you probably enjoy ridiculing your partner as you seem to have no qualms with verbally abusing individuals whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Sharpen up your inference and comprehension skills before you post utter stupidity on another post and shine too bright a light on your ignorance.

I don’t believe in calling anyone names when you’re upset.

I don’t really like being called a bitch myself...

Aqua and I referred to one another as ‘biatch’ when we were drinking...

Otherwise there are many other nicknames you can call me...

Miss Jackson if your nasty...

Okay but in jest if he regularly liked to refer to you as a ‘fat shit’, ‘landwhale’, ‘bitch’ or ‘cunt’ in regular dialogue throughout the day but the intention was always injecting comedic value, would you be totally fine with it? Would it make you feel closer to him?

No. I cant imagine those words coming out of my mouth towards my Cap. It feels disrespectful. He has never used those words towards me either. I dont think I have ever heard him use them towards anyone.

I also dont have friends that speak to me that way, not even in jest.

What is the point of using that language? To me, I would think you were verbally abused as a kid or something to think it was normal.

In the bedroom during rough sex...I dont mind some naughty words....but ONLY there.

You took the words straight out of my mouth. I agree with all these sentiments but obviously there are some couples that think it’s perfectly normal. However I never understood why two people in a committed relationship would speak to one another like that. I do like sarcasm and teasing, I love joking around with my partner and friends, but using such harsh terms with negative connotations seems unacceptable to me.

I'm cool with it.. usually the way I communicate. I would never use the word fat though. It all depends on their demeanor when saying stuff. If I can tell they are joking...I'll give it back. If they are serious...I give it back ten fold lol.

If it's adjectives we both know are not valid and we are sure it's a joke it's perfectly fine. Would never call my SO fat ass or whatever because women are sensitive to the word fat.

My gf calls me an idiot and asshole but it's fun, kinda cute.

Same with friends.

It's never crossed my mind tbh. With my first we used the word "crumpet" and no not the food but object of sexual desire. Can't remember how we got that but eh we were young and god damn sex maniacs.

Aside from that I don't think I've ever used any terms rather than a person's name. Not even sweety, honey, babe, etc. *Shrugs* Just not that type of person I guess.

All my friends use it though but we're in STRAYA so it's pretty much guaranteed at least 1 in 1 person uses derogatives as endearment.

You’re both nasty individuals so I’m not surprised in the least that you’d agree with them. You come on my topic trying to make comments like the despicable cunt you are about how you wouldn’t sleep with a woman that makes a thread like this as if I would ever even allow you to breathe the same air as me. You hoist yourself up on an invisible non existent pedestal to make yourself feel somewhat superior because you know truth be told not a single soul on this site would touch you with a barge pole because you’re disgusting and narcissistic. Trying to insinuate that you would even have the opportunity to touch someone like me is outrageous. Then you completely miss the point of the thread because your eyes are full of shit crust from having your head up your anus for so long. You don’t know me, so take your opinions and shove them up your shit riddled asshole.

That’s not derogative at all in my opinion as it doesn’t have the same connotations as perhaps calling a partner ‘bitch’. You’re more so using it as an expression of sexual desire for the other person and as you said because you would say it in a state of being quite horny.

Do you often see boyfriends referring to their woman as ‘bitch’ or ‘dickhead’ or ‘piece of shit’ jokingly?

Not in my circle not towards their partners but more amongst friends. You know when someone does something stupid "ya fucking dickhead", when someone does something to annoy you, or just pure genius "ya cunt".

I've seen it with my friend's parents though, but in the same context, it's never used to offend.

Closest I recall is that ex I referred to. One of her ex use to call her slut quite openly. But whatever floats her boat.

I'm okay with asshole even if it is serious.

The rest of the mentioned words not so much.

So you wouldn’t call your lady love a bitch in jest?

Only if I mean it.

So only if it’s warranted in a serious situation where she’s done something horrific to you?

Not limited to me.

If she would be acting like a bitch I would call her a bitch. Just as I'm okay with being called an asshole when I act like one.

I get the point that you’re making here. I personally wouldn’t go as far as saying asshole to my S/O but wouldn’t have any qualms with telling him he’s being an idiot and be vocal about his stupidity if he needed to hear it. I do believe you should call your partner out when it’s necessary but I wouldn’t use derogative terms to convey affection or as kindling for comedic impact.
