Actually, it isn't a valid point at all.
Who wouldn't have this expectation? In grown up society, if you are shagging and dating on a fairly regular basis for a month ... you give a Christmas gift. The only reason you wouldn't is a cultural bias.
I think you may be the scales because you try to balance and you should judge yourselves not others
Maybe he just couldn't find the right thing, or maybe he's been shagging someone else longer, or maybe he was having a family row - who knows
