My Mars is also conjunct the MC in the 10th, so it's strong and in an earth house. I do have Venus/Mercury in the 12th, but otherwise, no water house placements. Maybe some of your air planets are in water/fire/earth houses. That way, even if the expression is air-like, you express them in non-air departments of life. Everything helps to add some variety. I just saw the other responses about houses. I wish that I had seen them before typing the same thing, but they're spot on.
I have an excellent example of house/planet importance dominating sign expression, by the way. I'm sure that most of you are familiar with John Cena (wrestler) and LeBron James (basketball player). Both guys are big name athletes and obviously very martial in nature. Interesting, they each have a Pisces Midheaven. If you read the generic interpretations of Midheavens, you'd feel crazy, because they were supposedly meant to do something creative and artistic. But... they each have a Pisces Mars conjunct their Midheaven. And that's just the trick, isn't it? Any planets conjunct the MC are critical in determining the profession. Clearly, Mars athletisicm and competition came through much more so than the Pisces creativity. It's always the planet that matters the most. Don't ever forget it. Planets in houses matter most.
