A distant cousin ( our parents are cousins)

Just announced she's getting married next summer, her future father in law won the lottery a few years ago ( not sure when or how much ) and he's paying for their wedding, honeymoon, first home.

It got me thinking .. what would you do if you suddenly won... let's say 15M $

Would you share some of it with family/friends ?

Donate?

I would be very generous with the first half of 15 million, and then work on the remainder to build up the pile of money so that I could begin philanthropy down the road starting with desalination plants throughout the US.

Would you drop your career, would it change your life a lot?

Do you think people you're closest to would change..or perhaps expect you to be generous?

I would quit my job, invest at least a 1/3 of the money, make sure my family and close friends were taken care of, and then travel to places where people truly need help (whether from disasters, wars, or refugees) and volunteer my time, effort, and money. I plan to do this on a lower level but that kind of money would make a bigger impact and I could start sooner.

Do you think you'd be happier?

I think so. I grew up pretty poor so I know what it's like to go without but I've built myself up enough to the point where I have everything I need and the freedom to do what i want when i want. Right now, i just send money and pay for things for family and close friends and do Christmas charities but I'd like to do more.

Stories like that are actually very interesting to me. Yeah money makes everything easier and nicer but would you rather marry for money or for a person's qualities and characteristics? A guy who understands hard work and built his own empire versus a guy who's looked to daddy to support him. I think a person's level of appreciation and gratefulness towards something will equate to how much they will appreciate you. And most who seem to be fed by their daddies don't really seem grateful:

Lol... in my cousin's defense they've been dating for a long time, I wanna say at least college years.

She's in her late 30's now and I believe his (her fiancé)' father won the lottery only a few years ago.

It's like his father was waiting for him to propose / get married before giving $ $ $ away. :/

We're not close so i don't know much of the details..I think I've met her fiancé once or twice MAX.

All I heard so far was that she's getting a big hollywood wedding reception/venue...Honeymoon and the house paid for.

Gossip always travels fast in my fam 😆

Not sure if 15M would be enough. But I'd try to buy a huge chunk of the ocean, bribe some politicians to put a ban on keeping orcas in captivity in marine parks then buy orcas in captivity from marine parks, and create a sanctuary for them lolz. I'd build some beach houses out of containers and make it a tourist attraction but a much more friendly one.

I like the Orca Sanctuary idea 😢 considering they hardly make it once set free back to the ocean.

That would have to be a big ass sanctuary...

I would develop the technology and adapt it large cargo ships here in the US since we have the resources.

Because more than oil, the wars of the future will be fought over potable water all over the world probably within the next 50 to 100 years.

got it - I guess there are no other technologies to make water other than desalting the oceans - with the rise in water levels this doesn't sound too bad and should hold for a few years but seriously won't that start to deplete the oceans at some point

I take it life will suck at that point in time anyway - god only knows how our species will survive in the future

We have a near-infinite supply of ocean water, probably less than 1% of the water that's left on planet Earth is potable.

There are other technologies, but desalination using reverse osmosis is a technology we have now. And with carbon nanotubes and graphene, I'm sure we can make them even better.

I wonder if anyone has studied the impacts of this. Not just on the oceans which help control the earth's temperatures but on marine life and also the affects on land. Of course dipping into the oceans for some water isn't going to impact very much but they are predicting some vast amounts of water shortages all over the world in the not to far future. We at least have to maintain some balance while making sure we all have good water source and that the crops will grow.

Would probably help my parents pay off some debts and set them up along with my grand parents for a comfy retirement. With my sisters... only if they ask since I really don't trust them with any amount of money. I'd leave a sum to my brother as he's business smart and probably help him with any business ventures.

Majority would be going into my daughter no questions asked but perhaps just stashed away in an account til she grows up. Though she's turning out to be frugal like her dad lmao. I'd probably use some of it to establish some connections later on that my daughter can use and definitely invest in a few things.
