I’ll ask my bartender if I see him Sunday night. I think he’s there Sunday’s..

Posted by RooSagicornPosted by Gemitati
Ok. So daring bartender and planning marrying him and having kids...wouldn’t be possible to figure out how is my family going to do financially...will I have to work? Will we be able to buy a house...
How does it go?
Yes you’d have to work, to be able to buy a house. My ex supported family decently but never was able to buy a house or save for retirement. He made minimum wage + tips and in this area he makes 200-300 a night if it’s friday Saturday, or super busy. Slow days less. It’s a nice job for him though he does serving & bartending & never later than midnight. But works holidays & weekends to get the better tipping days.click to expand

This profession confuses heck out of me! He is supporting family decently but can’t afford to pay mortgage? Because can’t save for down payment? To me it’s far from decent support of the family.
Making $ 250 per night seems like a good money so how come he wasn’t able to save on down payment?
And what happen to them when they are aging? And not so cute for tips anymore?
Haha! He’s 48 & still is doing well. Quite the charisma. Everyone “knows him” around town. It’s a small area so what he makes is pretty good for the area.
Bad decisions. 2 marriages & last one left him with lots of debt. He gave that one the finer things in life but not a mortgage.. now he’s pretty much screwed. First wife never worked at all, second one did but had a spending problem.click to expand

So and he is your ex as well?
What’s wrong with this man? Lol
I was helping him get out of debt ( not financially but through advice) and advising what he could do to help himself. But he just whined he was poor ( which isn’t true) and it was woe is me. Capricorn negativity and being miserable. Seems he likes being miserable. He’s an idiot.click to expand

Bartenders make their money off of tips. So it has less to do with type of bar and more to do with how many patrons, your looks and social skills.

I did have a job similar to bar tending in that I worked a few days a week and made a killing. $ 75 per hour for private swim lessons.
It’s how I supported myself and put myself through school with minimal loans. Best job.

Big difference in where you work. Management, clientele, specialties, location, restaurant type, hours and prices would vary. You can earn as little as a around 3/4 hundred for a full week. All the way up to about 3/4 grand on a weekend (Thursday thru Saturday) that’s off tips.
Where I live, restaurant work is based off only tips. Servers and bartenders get an hourly but it’s only $ 2.13, which all goes to taxes. Some states/countries pay better hourlies tho. And if you’re a bar manager you will make a high hourly or salary and if you work shifts you make tips.
The higher money jobs do tend to come with more work. Hours are normally really rough (6/7pm till 4AM) more stress, more political. If someone is charming, good with drunks and good looking tho it’s a gold mine.

Don't you have a minimum hourly rate....by law it's just under 10 euros an hour here?
By law it is $ 2.13. That was my hourly rate lol. And it covers about 60-70% of taxes so I never take it home. You still end up owing more in taxes so I’d claim monthly so I wouldn’t have to backpay hundreds during tax season. In my four years in the service industry I never once was paid a check that I didn’t get directly from tips. Never saw my hourly. Where I live we literally live off tips.click to expand

That sounds awful, illegal and totally archaic 😐
Where do you live Elly?
Atlanta, GA, US
Archaic yeah but not illegal lol. It wasn’t ever awful for me but I chose higher volume and/or price points to work. If I worked at some small diner it would have been rough. Though I will say even at my last restaurant job I wasn’t making more than $ 300 a week working 40-50 hours. Volume took a drastic downturn the last month I was there.
Overall it was sustainable for the short term. The restaurant industry is known to be rough here tho. Rarely are there any tax documented full time employees, so they don’t have to offer us benefits. We rarely would ever get breaks for meals even though working 12-16 hour shifts on the weekend is pretty standard. If you complain then you get written up or your hours taken away. And you just budget well, then remember the day you took home $ 500 on the day you sat around for 8 hours and paid the restaurant to go home lol.
But it was good for my life when I needed to work more freedom. I was going through intense therapy and dramatic life changes and the atmosphere is a little more lax for that. Paid the bills so no complaints there.click to expand

Unbelievable! 😳😡
It's illegal here to work more than a few hours without a break and any employer who doesn't allow that could be in trouble
Well technically it is illegal to work 7 and a half hours with no break here. But people just get fired if they complain too much. Again, a right to Work state. You can get fired for anything. Getting fired on unreasonable grounds.....does anyone ever fight back?
Jfc
👎🏻
There’s no such things as unreasonable grounds tho for my state. That’s not a concept here really. You could literally be fired because someone doesn’t like your face, they could write that down and it’s legal. So in most cases, there’s no fighting back to be done since the law is very permissible and supportive of business.
The only unlawful firing would be anything that violates federal law, such as a form of discrimination (sexuality, gender, race, etc) or legally prosecuted and convicted harassment/abuse. Not all the US is like this. It’s highly a state by state matter. Western and northern states are very different. But most southern states, this is the norm.click to expand
