yup Alicia is correct
Serratos was born in Pasadena, California[2] and raised in Burbank, California.[1][3] Her mother is a jewelry designer of Italian and Mexican descent; while her father was a set construction worker of Italian and Irish descent.[3] She began figure skating when she was 3 and continued competitively, saying, "My coaches were talking about the Olympics and it was really crazy. Now, I just do it for fun."[4] At the age of 7, she signed with the Ford Modeling Agency.[3]

Not speaking your native language doesn't take away from the fact that you still hold the blood of your ancestors of course.
Besides, to the Latinos who know their history, speaking Spanish isn't always a symbol of pride.click to expand
Posted by xXxAliciaXxXI don't think she did. She learned how to speak Spanish after she went to Mexico and messed up a few interviews. She wasn't fluent as a child.Posted by AriesIntrovert16She didn't learn Spanish after she became famous. She learned it while she was still a child and became fluent in it. The only thing that never went away was her funny Americanized accent when she spoke it, but she knew Spanish and she knew it well.Posted by ImpulsvRight, Spanish wasn't her native language and she learned it after she became famous. Anyone who’s seen the movie knows the Queen of Tejano music wasn’t raised speaking Spanish. She conducted interviews in English, and it wasn’t until the early 1990s that she began taking Spanish lessons.http://remezcla.com/lists/culture/4-things-selena-quintanilla-taught-me/

Posted by xXxAliciaXxXNo, Alicia, she couldn't. There are plenty of sources that say she couldn't speak it fluently until much later in life.Posted by AriesIntrovert16Yes, she could. She was fluent. Her Spanish just wasn't perfected. There's a difference.
Sing, she learned phonetically, but didn't pick it up as a language. She couldn't speak Spanish, fluently, until she was much older.
Which is fine, btw.
She could hold conversations for the most part, but there would be times where she'd stutter or get stuck trying to remember how to say something in Spanish.
That does not mean you're not fluent. Being fluent in something doesn't mean you never make mistakes while speaking the language. It means for the most part you understand it and speak it fairly well. Which she did.
I'm not sure why you want her to not be fluent in Spanish so bad, but you are very wrong about when she learned Spanish and her level of fluency.
Still, keep lying to yourself though. Whatever makes you feel better. That's a very odd thing to lie about though.....click to expand
Posted by xXxAliciaXxXAnd you aren't? Plenty of sources say she couldn't speak Spanish fluently until she was much older.. I can sing her songs in Spanish, but that doesn't make me a Spanish speaker, fluently.Posted by KatanaThe few times I've interacted with this user I can tell that they always have to be right, but I have never seen AriesIntrovert16 actually be right about something.Posted by AriesIntrovert16When was it stated in my post that you stated in your post that she was less than for not speaking Spanish? lol 😉

Posted by firebunnyWhat about making an ad hoc law just for that?
@Palerio does that mean I am not Spanish if I can't speak it?

Thats the difference between you and I. Yes, I can be quite hard headed, but I dont argue with facts like you do.
If someone shows me some valid evidence that I am wrong I will admit that I am wrong and leave it there. You on the other hand, won't.click to expand

Posted by xXxAliciaXxXThanks, Ill help you out, I see you're drowning in them....Posted by AriesIntrovert16And the link I showed you said she was fluent and taught Spanish at a young age.
"As she’s so famous for singing in Spanish, it may come as a surprise to learn that Selena’s first language for many years was English – she grew in Texas after all, albeit in a Hispanic community. According to Selena Quintanilla facts, her father encouraged her to sing in Spanish later on in order to widen her appeal among the Mexican-American community. Selena learned the words phonetically initially before she learned to speak Spanish properly"
This one has even has facts in the title....

Take this L, Alicia. It's a wrap.
Also her family, the ones who partook greatly in making the Selena movie, have confirmed this.
So you can keep that L because you need it A LOT more than I do. As a matter of fact, here. (hands over L)

Also, nowhere on that site does it state that she learned to speak Spanish fluently as a child. She learned to speak it, eventually, when she was much older, in 1994. Which I cited multiple sources to.
Go back and read everything I wrote because I never stated that she was fluent as a child. I stated she was fluent by the time she became famous.
If you need help reading the big words, let me know. Seems like your reading comprehension isn't too up to par.
Enjoy those L's. 😄click to expand

Posted by hydorahShe learned how to sing in Spanish as a child, but didn't learn to speak fluently, the ability to speak a language easily and very well, until 1994. Which she took lessons for.
What does that all mean? did she speak spanish or not? we need to know! What age did she learn spanish?
And does that make her a real latina or not? Guys, we need to get to the bottom of this (no pun intended),
we can do it guys
