Well, I got promoted at my new job yesterday just two weeks out of training. I am now sales manager. I'm not sure the two people that I am managing will be as thrilled. We all started at the same time and trained at a different location.

One guy is about 15 years older than me and has a huge ego. He actually walked out during his training and announced that he was better than any of the other employees and was doing the company a favor. He apologized and somehow kept his job. He was also manager of a competitor but was fired. He claimed that they just wanted his knowledge. He seems to really like me but I have a feeling that will change when it's announced.

The other guy is around 25 years older. He's early 60's and been unemployed for a couple years. He has a friend that pulled strings to get him in. He's a really nice, good guy (Libra) but really bad at the job. He doesn't know how to work the program and still can't be left unsupervised. He also gets nervous and says ridiculous things to customers and scares them away. I usually have to jump in to save business. We are all base plus commission and I don't see this poor guy doing himself any favors.

How should I handle this? The Libra guy is really sweet and I would love for him to do well. How can I teach an old dog new tricks?

And giant ego guy? He is gonna hit the roof once he finds out on Monday. We get along now but I have a feeling he will start trying to challenge me.

Thank you!

Right now, we all get along great but I've seen ego guy in action with the managers of other locations during training. He throws tantrums and thinks he is the best.

This doesn't sound like it will bode well with that specific ego centric guy. He's arrogant and challenging? And because your a woman and younger, I bet he's gonna try to get on you about something. Good luck I hope it turns out well.

As for the older gentleman, it just might not be his niche. I think it sounds like he has social issues and just needs some confidence training to have answers on the fly. As for the program, he might succeed with dummy phone convos about the products and maybe you could somehow simulate reasons that would make him navigate the program under the conversations.
The older guy just called in telling me he will be 2 hours late. On a very busy Saturday. His back hurts.

Well with ego guy, I would explain how things are going to be now and what you expect of him. But if someone just keeps being rude and disrespectful like that, I would let them go. He knows better.

I don't even know about the other guy. Right now we work with a guy and he is probably mid to late 50s. He has been there almost a year and is seriously the most clueless person ever. He still continues to ask the rest of us basic questions that he should have memorized by now. He is so annoying and all he wants to do is talk. He doesn't belong in this position

Yes! You get it. This older guy is the same. He is such a nice guy but it's frustrating.

You have to be fearless, honestly it's just business you all have to remember to not take it personally, you're all human and are there to get the job done, it's your job to delegate and get the best out of your employees. You need to make the Ego guy your right hand man because he's the one you're going to rely on at times to compensate for the libra, use your pussy now and then if you must.

Because it's the ultimate weapon in a woman's arsenal to get what she want in the workplace, I don't literally mean to fuck them, but the fact that she has a pussy gives her tremendous leverage in a work environment and has many applications to solve different situations in a plethora of ways. The pussy works as a catalyst to get the ball moving so to speak.

I've got nothing.

Boomers are the most intolerable in the workplace and impossible to manage.

I would take 10 milennials to 1 Boomer...every. day.every.minute.

In my most recent project I had a handful of boomers and we are 9 months after implementation of a new system and their asses are still doing things "the way we've always done it"....which affects everyone....in a negative way.

I've trained, retrained and triple trained...to no avail.

They have been the least progressive and very high maintenance.....but if you ask them....they are the most valuable and hardest working.

It's baffling.
this.

Its understandable that liking someone makes work life easier, but its business and if someone can't perform, that in the end reflects upon their manager. Attemp to spend some additonal training, but if he still doesnt 'get it' then i would look for a replacement. Dont pick up slack for either person, your job as a manager is to manage, which some times entails making hard choices, even when you like someone.

Congratulations!

I don't see their ages as s factor in the performance and behavioral issues you presented. The answer to the performance and behavioral issues is training and counseling.

It seems their ages plays a factor for you in being announced the new boss. I have found age to be irrelevant as it is supposed to be... EEO and all. So, I would stop that train of thought. I always have people 10+ years working for me and I don't care how old they are. I respect differences; practice, acknowledge, and celebrate diversity; but, behavior, perfomance issues, I cannot entertain.

-document

-counsel

-train

-suspend

-fire

My employee once said he doesn't feel appreciated. I said your pay check is my appreciation of your work!

He got it! Just never thought of it I guess!

Doing company a favor means working for free! Tell that bozo that!

Sweet useless guy ... well. Can you offer him an easier position like making copies and answer the phone?

Good luck! Congrats and buckle up!

Boomers....clock out at 5pm and don't take calls or emails until 8am the next morning.....and weekends are completely off limits unless you want to tolerate a bunch of bitching and moaning.
This sounds more like a case of older ppl being aware of their contracts, their limitations and clauses and not giving a fuck to the boss who needs assets to do the work over the weekend

They were probably once like the millenials now, that are scared to loose their job and let themselves be convinced there's something to gain (favour, advancement, bonuses) from overclocking and weekend work.

I fully understand your problem tho, but i also know younger, fresher to the firm ppl are more easily pushed towards working extra time.

But....when you are unhappy or have submitted to the 'good ole boys' club of simply 'having each other's back' and doing only the bare minimum required...just because you can...you create a suck work experience for everyone around you.

"Who did this mistake?"

*noone knows nothing but you know it was one of them

jajajajajaja

Actually, they have become quite clever....*nobody* makes mistakes anymore...its always the computer's fault.

I have spent countless hours troubleshooting ghost issues and poke yoking software so mistakes can't happen and they still manage to work around it.

I had one person actually try to convince me that their computer was broken because it wouldn't stop typing in capital letters....asked them to push caps locks and they insisted they already did....and I had to go in their office to push it myself in their presence.....these are our fricken VPs. Smh.

One of the old boys club members once passive aggressively threatened me with "i bowl with your superior once a month". I wanted to drown him in a toilet. The nerve of one of the most corner cutting cunts i ever saw.
